If it was registered and legal, they probably would have taken it with them since the gun could be used to identify them. It doesn't even matter if it wasn't an AK47. Regarding your original statement, it being used by a criminal and being left there shows it might've been obtained illegaly. It being an AK-47 is irrelevant.
