So he thought it would be a good idea to let a news firm publish his blunder so that everybody who lives nearby knows that there's $50,000 sitting at the local dump?

Must suck to be him
I find this hard to believe.
You know what I do with my valuables I cannot afford to get stolen? I put them in vacuum sealed bags, inside a larger vacuum sealed bag and that's inside a eight inch PVC pipe capped off at one end and the other is a screwed on lid with triple o-rings. Then I place the container in a vertical pipe section, I think ten inches in diameter, about six feet down and then I cover that pipe and replace the dirt. Why? Because I get a strange sense of satisfaction out of actually hiding my shit like a squirrel and peace of mind knowing nobody, ever, will find my cache of awesome outside of randomly digging in that exact spot. More work than, say, trash bags but I'll never accidentally throw my underground treasure in the garbage.
Who even has that much moneys worth of jewelry?
Someone in the far future is gonna find this and be a lucky fuck

I should go check it out later.
