I have heard from a friend in Texas that passenger rail transport in the USA is practically non-existent.
In a lot of places close to DC it gets used quite a lot, since a lot of people commute to and from DC, Virginia, and all of the other states around DC. Otherwise I can't imagine it getting used as frequently in many other places.
Can't wait until the MW17 campaign opens with this tunnel.
"Soap! Plant the bloody charges, we cannot let the train and the nuke pass onto Russian soil!"
It makes a lot more sense to make a north Pacific line than anywhere on the Atlantic side. It's also a lot cheaper and a LOT shorter.

Greenland is a silly part of Denmark, it has less people in it than in most small cities.

Late as fuck man.
Wow seems completely useless to me. I must be missing something here.
Neither end of the tunnel has something worthwhile near it and flying would probably cheaper.
Maybe for transport of goods, but boats are cheap, and airplanes are fast.
Isn't Eastern Asia linked to Europe by a train network? This could finally make cheap, fast travel between North America and Eurasia. Planes are boats are fine and dandy, but air tickets are incredibly expensive and boat travel isn't that common anymore.

Oh, wait, I forgot that the US doesn't have any worthwhile train networks. Oh well.
can't see this being used for military means

Transporting military personnel and equipment from North America to Eastern Asia via rail, you dingus.

Get on the Trans Siberian Railway to Moscow. From Moscow you can go anywhere in Europe through Poland and Germany.
Just the trip to Moscow is over 9000km long though.
Waste of money? Yes. Unique Idea? Yes. Would I ride on it and get stuck in Siberia and die of Starvation and Frostbite? Fuck yes.

Transiberian Railway seemed to work very well as getting you from Europe to China.
I already wrote a script about this tunnel.
It's called Bears In A Tunnel.
On the day this tunnel is opened, a disgruntled worker forgets to lock the front gate on the Alaskan side, allowing a polar bear to enter. Meanwhile, by coincidence, a brown bear sneaks into the tunnel on the Russian side because the guard thinks he's just a fat worker in a large brown coat.
So the tunnel opens and a parade leads people from the Russian side(since it was their idea) to Alaska. As luck would have it, the brown bear and polar bear meet up in the middle and start fighting right as the parade shows up. Mass carnage ensues.
I'm still not sure if this should be in 3d or not.

I will provide funding in the form of Apple shares.
Even though there's not much there, this could actually provide a bit of an economic jolt to both Alaska and that area of Siberia. There'd be much more trade passing through, and it would likely develop both those areas much much more. Great for the economy, especially if Russia's the one paying for it and we can both reap the benefits.
I find no problem with this. It can run from Barrow to King's Island to Magadan. I mean honestly, it's a good way to transport Asian goods along with nuclear weapons.
"the ultimate rail trip across three quarters of the globe from London to New York"
OH MY FUCKING GOD YES
[editline]25th August 2011[/editline]
i've always wanted to travel the transiberian railway. but this! oh my fuck
That sounds like bullshit. Unlike the Channel Tunnel, there is nothing of value on either side of what they're proposing. A frozen wasteland in Siberia and a frozen wasteland in Alaska. Both are so far from relevant civilization that any sane person would just fly to their destination instead of enduring a days-long train grind through the empty tundra.
Even if people did want to use it, that would mean they would each have to invest massively in building new highways and probably even new cities on both sides of the tunnel

Sounds delicious.
How the fuck did this happen.
As GM, they're the ones who decided to fuck over our transportation system at the mid century point in the 20th century.

lerr HSR is the easiest method of transportation to sabotage
if they have ANY intel whatsoever they could sabotage that line in no time flat
There are tunnels longer than this in the world already
Meant about the guy saying air travel is infinitely faster than trains.
Wait a minute, Vancouver-Moscow via rail.
this would make for far cheaper transport from Europe to NA, for this train system could be linked to existing tracks in both Russia and USA/Canada, the only problem I can see with it is the northern terrain being a bitch, now if this was some day converted to a high speed rail system, that would be great
Yeah, trains are just far too slow for this to be truly useful. It would take days, and no one wants to travel for multiple days when they could just fly. Meanwhile, freight can be shipped by sea quite efficiently as it is.
At one point a few years ago, my parents decided to try going from central Indiana to Virginia by train. Turns out it would have saved them 5$. In return, they had to travel for two days each way (Get to city, all the northbound/southbound trains have left for the day). That cut the vacation from 7 days to 3 days. For 5$. No thanks.
Uhh, there's water in the way isn't there?
I know, I know, don't ZING me for being sarcastic. I know they can do it. Why not do it over the water? It'd make it so much more interesting.
I have heard from a friend in Texas that passenger rail transport in the USA is practically non-existent.
Nope, there are thousands of rail systems connecting every major city and trade center.

Have you ever been on a train? I would love to get on one in New York and travel all the way around the world to London. It'd be amazing.
Guys this wouldn't make sense for passenger rail, however, this would be a godsend for freight.
I still want a bridge the connects America to Asia.
It could be done. Man got to the Moon, defeated Hitler, made HIV friendly and killed cancer with it. So we can do anything.
