With the pathetic state of disrepair the internet and phone infrastructure is in this country, I wouldn't be surprised if upkeep costs them more than it should.
Hardly justifies a 300$ bill. I'll most certainly have to pay something ridiculous like that. Problem is that no other ISP's are going to be able to offer half decent speeds, and fair prices if what you said about Bell owning the majority of the infrastructure.

We need that Virgin Mobile guy to fly over here and throw billions of dollars around to get some new lines set up.
Why do I get the feeling that this is one of those things that won't actually happen and everyone will forget about it in a week.
I hate threads like this, I always end up showing the crappy internet in South Africa.
Fucking Bell, man. They're assholes. They call me all the time, they send me shitty fliers in the mail, their service is complete shit and they're expensive. I'm with an awesome independent ISP with exceptional services and tech support, they're cheap too. Shaw bought them however, so there goes the best internet service I've ever had and will probably ever have again.
Oh well, I don't use Bell. Wait, does this only apply to Bell? Or what, I think the articles unclear.
No. If the bill is passed it will apply to everyone. Or it will eventually anyway.
I use teksavvy, best ISP in canada IMO. Fuuuuuuuuuuuu about this though :\
Damn it, Shaw.
videotron is a very good ISP despite bandwith caps [editline]11:52AM[/editline] and bell sucks anyways [editline]11:53AM[/editline] probably more than comcast, just that bad
Yeah, that's a great idea, government owned ISPs....
Uhh actually, government owned business does quite well here. We used to have the majority share of Petrocanada and kept gas prices down... until the Liberals sold it to their buddies right before gas prices shot up (and it was obvious they were going to do so, no fucking excuse) and now we pay stupid high gas prices all over again. BTW, Liberals here in Canada are a fucking lie. There is Progressive Conservatives (which are more centerist than anything) and criminals, who lie, cheat, and steal their way into office. That's about it. [editline]03:04PM[/editline]
videotron is a very good ISP despite bandwith caps [editline]11:52AM[/editline] and bell sucks anyways [editline]11:53AM[/editline] probably more than comcast, just that bad
I liked videotron, but they put a 100gb cap on their EXTREME plan, which was $100 a month. That pissed me off... but it's still better than Bell, which is quite sad. Just so you guys know, this is not the first time this has happened. When broadband first came out, the CRTC continously refused to regulate it and Bell/Videotron/Rogers/Shaw/Telus basically ripped the carpet out from under the competition ISPs. We ran one such ISP, called ChatCanada, in Ottawa. We simply could not afford the prices Bell was asking for, and were confined to 56k while Bell was selling cheap broadband. We, along with many other locals, were forced to sell the business. A damn shame. Now, Bell wants to do this to us again. I don't know what the fucking CRTC's problem is, but they keep failing Canadians. They've failed us on both Internet AND Wireless networks. Let's hope, for their sake, they don't fail us again.

Then he gets fuckloads of credits so he gets bell expressvu for free.
Well that sucks, eh?
It sucks bandwidth.
My uncle is able to rip them off, he just calls them and screams "IM UNSASTIFIED!" Then he gets fuckloads of credits so he gets bell expressvu for free.
that doesn't make the service any better their internet is slow as fuck thanks to being a satellite connection and their only way to compete with the other ISPs is to have no bandwith cap which they claim they do but they actually cut your internet service if you use it too much and their customer service is shit too
It's still better than Comcast, there are no other ISP's in my area which just gives Comcast a big fucking monopoly, and they occasionally disconnect your internet for visiting "Godless liberal websites" Fuck Comcast.
scroll down * $35.00/month regular price when bundled with any other Shaw service * $43.95/month standalone not even close to $80/month for 300 kbps
http://www.shaw.ca/en-ca/ProductsServices/Television/Digital/ProgrammingPackages.htm I did say "Cable included"
hmm.. I get ~800kb/s download all the time, and pay 30$ for phone, cable, and internet service. I live in Canada, and get my service from videotron. A price increase wouldn't be that bad, especially if they're also upping the speeds.
I'm really not sure how this will affect me. I live in an area with two competing ISPs - Bell Sympatico and Cogeco. We have Cogeco and pay about $100/month for hi-def digital cable and 10 Mbps internet with a bandwidth cap of somewhere between 60 and 100 GB. I'm kind of scared now :ohdear:
I'm currently having no issues with my 10 Megabit Bell-Aliant internet. The only thing better in Halifax is Eastlink (Rodgers) with 15 Megabit. Although, paying up to 300$ a month for internet is really horrible. My household is crazily internet heavy, with my brother on the PS3, my dad and mom on their laptops, and me playing gMod. But half of these proposed things rarely go through. No worries.
I'm glad I don't live in Canada. My internet price would go all the way to $300 because of how much the internet is used in my house.
Great, I hope they go down by 2014, since i'm planning on moving there then
See ya HQRSE. Let's be honest, you and your christ-mom barely have enough money to maintain your plaster cabin you call a house, let alone the internet. I can actually imagine your mom begging on her knees to you dad asking for a handout.
They know that people need the internet, so they're trying to cover their losses due to the recession by squeezing money out of their customers
Oh for fuck's sake. It's already expensive enough, this is just a fucking scam. Looks like I'm going back to dialup.
Well, if the price for internet access would be higher proporsionaly too the speed, then that would be incedibly cheap for me. I get too pay 25 Euro for 50 Kbit internet, and that is the max I can get and I don't live in the middle of nowhere.
