It's funny that you can instantly recognize the kind of person that would whine about this just by looking at their face on Twitter.
ok thx 4 the update dude this really helps things out :) no really, this is the stupidest, awkward, and most insulting thing i've read in a fair while, good job edit: wat up GAMERRRR
Not our fault at most. Girls I know don't usually like videogames at all and call it for nerds.
Well, it's at least partly the fault of the industry for not making it look more appealing. Gaming still has a nasty stigma against it, and this isn't being helped by the industry seemingly focusing their attention on the teenage boy demographic. The community isn't always something to be proud of either, with Xbox Live (in my experience anyway) being the most horrifyingly racist/sexist/bigoted group of people out there. Now obviously I'm not generalizing that to everyone, but we have to look at it from an outsider's point of view and, in that regard, some of these communities simply aren't friendly. There's a lot of issues involved in this, from industry appearance ("Oh, it's just toys for children") to the wrongful enforcing of gender roles (which I've even seen by women saying "Well, I'm a girl so I don't play video games), to aspects of the gaming community needing to grow up and be more welcoming. Some of that can be laid at the fault of society, but there's no denying that the industry isn't doing itself any favors.
have you ever, maybe, considered why? [editline]a[/editline] for the record, I'm a feminist and I hate the gaming industry
It could just be personal preferrence, you know.
But we are on an online forum though.
a gaming-centric forum with a lot of shit going on at times
a forum about a game full of gamers and I directly replied to a guy who's currently playing dota
A sub-forum about news though. Not everyone here on facepunch joined just to post about gmod.
did you miss the part where I replied to a gamer
No, but the way you phrased it made it sound like everyone on FP counted.
No, but the way you phrased it made it sound like everyone on FP counted.
stop arguing pendatics associating with a stupid gamer subculture is one thing, enjoying playing computer games on your free time is another
stop arguing pendatics
Just saying, dude. [editline]21st February 2013[/editline] Well if you guys want a legitimate argument then just hear me out: What I think makes this ridiculous is that this isn't sexism, this is just a coincidence. I mean let me put it to you this way: Though there can be sexism in the gaming industry, simply having all your presenters be men doesn't make it sexist. If they openly stated this fact, then yeah that does make it a little sexist. But then again in my opinion you can throw sexism around just like racism. That's just me talking though. To me, sexism in this case is basically : "Our presenters are all men cause we think that women couldn't do this job" Accusing them of sexism is one thing, but to know that they are is another.
Hahahaha 47% of gamers are women.
Are you being serious? I did not know it was that high
Hahahaha 47% of gamers are women.
It depends on what you class as games, if you include mobile/facebook games it's about that. Gaming now includes such a broad range of games from sudoku and farmvile to WoW and Battlefield. The people who play mobile/facebook games are different to the gamers who play PC/console games, in the same way people who drive cars and car enthusiasts are different, the enthusiasts are a lot more likely to want get a jobs in the automotive industry. There aren't a lack of women who play games, but there are a lack of women who take games seriously enough to want to get into the gaming industry. Everyone and their grandmother play games at some level (the same study which states the 60/40 ratio also states the average gamer age is 35) but not everyone takes games seriously enough to want to get a job in the games industry. There are sexist people in the games industry but it's not at the overwhelming level everyone makes it out to be, and it isn't the main reason why there are very few women in the industry.

It is sorta like forcing a girl who likes metal to prove herself when she says she likes metal, since guys will assume girls who like metal are not "real metal fans". It's sexism. 47% of gamers are women. That's it. [editline]21st February 2013[/editline] I bet the reason that "gmer grlz" exist (if they even do) is because they were forced to project an image of a girl playing "real" games because too many neckbeards accused them of not being "real" gamers. As a community still dominated by guys, we cause the problems that women complain about in articles like this one. We can't call them dumb for complaining until we do more to stop distinguishing between "real" and "fake" fans of things based on gender.

I'm trying to say yes there are a lot of female gamers, but there's aren't as much female game enthusiasts.
Hahahaha 47% of gamers are women.
I hope you know that the 47% also includes women that play flashgames or social networking games like Farmville or Bejeweled and stuff like that. Gaming is such a loosely used term nowadays too. If you even play a game once a week you're considered a gamer by today's standards.
at my uni there's tons of females in the game design major which is p great. i havent seen any instance of sexism
99.999% of men wear clothes, how many men are there in the fashion industry? by your logic the fashion industry must be sexist and not the fact that even know men wear clothes a majority of them aren't fashion enthusiasts and therefore have little to no interest in getting a job in that industry.
Hahahaha 47% of gamers are women.
47% of gamers, not 47% of overall population. And flash games don't count. By that logic, everyone in my family is a gamer.
wait what there are plenty of men in the fashion industry heck, most of the wealthiest people in the industry are men
If there are a lot of men in the fashion industry I am sorry for assuming there aren't, the fashion industry isn't something I have a lot of knowledge of. I still think my point is still valid, even if my example wasn't based on reality.
47% of gamers, not 47% of overall population.
what is this even supposed to mean
Hahahaha 47% of gamers are women.
Are you sure about that? Last I checked it was around ~30% or so.
I bet the reason that "gmer grlz" exist (if they even do) is because they were forced to project an image of a girl playing "real" games because too many neckbeards accused them of not being "real" gamers. And with or without neckbeards calling someone out, you are hardly a gamer if you play a flash game every now and then, mainly because you usually call someone a gamer when said individual plays daily and puts effort into it, be it on his performance, buying games or consoles, and so on.
what is this even supposed to mean
I'm assuming he means that the number of female gamers is smaller because it's only 47% of gamers. Doesn't really give an argument or make a point.
47% of gamers, not 47% of overall population. And flash games don't count. By that logic, everyone in my family is a gamer.
who the shit cares, people enjoy playing computer games, stop being a massive nerd
don't men play flash games also they're in that statistic too you know not that it matters because gaming elitism is lame as fuck
who the shit cares, people enjoy playing computer games, stop being a massive nerd
Same way a person isn't a car enthusiast from playing racing games only or the same way a person isn't a fan of a band when they just like one of their songs. Just because people enjoy playing computer games doesnt makes them gamers, which is what we are discussing here, and I have no idea what does being right have to do with being a nerd.
