Just because people enjoy playing computer games doesnt makes them gamers
who the fuck cares about semantics
gamers was shorthand for "people who play games", don't think anyone is interested in arguing about who's gamer or not gamer for 5 pages (again)
Gamer just means someone for who gaming is a hobby
If you use common sense you'll see that playing temple run on your iphone while waiting for the bus or whatever doesn't make you a gaming hobbyist
Same way a person isn't a car enthusiast from playing racing games only or the same way a person isn't a fan of a band when they just like one of their songs.
See, that's not a very good analogy because even if you only like one song from a band, that doesn't make you any less of a fan of music in general. In much the same way, only liking one type of game doesn't mean that you dislike games as a whole, merely that you know your preference. If I only play shooters, does that mean that I must hate all other games?
Just because people enjoy playing computer games doesnt makes them gamers, which is what we are discussing here, and I have no idea what does being right have to do with being a nerd.
what more does a person need to do to fit your arbitrary definitions on who is or isn't a gamer? do they need to have their fingers stained with the powder of a thousand Cheetos? is there a secret handshake I don't know about? do you get a little green card that says "Dass is Satisfied With My Gamerness"?
[editline]21st February[/editline]
seriously other than "someone who plays games" how else can you define a gamer

So, then my family is made of gamers lol
Semantics matters in this case.
A person who plays a game every now and then because they got nothing to do isn't a gamer.
A person who plays every day is called a gamer.
By your logic, someone who does paintball or airsoft once or twice is alraedy an enthusiast of the activity.

you're not a nerd, you're self-important. apparently people don't get to be called gamers because king gamer dass says that you have to have so many points on a gamer resume to be called one.

it's like saying "oh you aren't a car driver because you don't enter races!" or "you aren't a guitarist because you don't ever perform shows!"

You guys blow things so much out of proportion...
First, I said "...or the same way a person isn't a fan of a band when they just like one of their songs." and said nothing about not being a fan of music in general.
Second, I've said it before, you are a gamer when you make it a habit, and turn it into a hobby. How is that so hard to understand?
It's like you could go into something like airsoft, see a couple of new people with rented guns and others with their own customized guns and gear, and instantly say "Oh they are all hardcore airsofters!"
By your logic, some guy who grabs a game to play when he's bored is instantly a gamer. What fucking sense does that make?
someone that only plays angry birds is less likely to go into the gaming industry than someone who plays console and pc games though (and i am referring to exclusively playing mobile games), which i think is the point of his argument? because if the percentage of female gamers drops from 47% to like 25% by excluding the mobile apps only gamers that would explain the under-representation of women in the gaming industry
where do you get that idea that someone who only plays angry birds will not want to be in the gaming industry? if someone enjoys games they have a higher likeliness of wanting to be in the industry.

it's statistically impossible for that to be true
and the biggest market for games is "casual" games, not to mention MMO's which also have an almost equal female base, and the Wii which people say won over the other two consoles with sales by appealing to female gamers more
the idea that this industry revolves around "hardcore" gamers is not true, if it did we wouldn't see everyone trying to escape that demographic. Steam's constant social network expanding is a calculated effort to increase social interaction in games.

Because being a "car driver" (whatever that is...) means you HAVE to go to races, and who the hell calls someone a guitarist when you don't have a band?
By your logic, if I fix something in a car, I am a mechanic, or if I play a round of soccer, I am a soccer player.
And if thats being called self-important, then you're being dumb.
because gamer doesn't imply any sense of dedication, it is simply used to refer to people who play games.
you would have a point if you were talking about hardcore gamers.

this isnt a thread about linguistics, a semantic shift is just a fallacy and not worth debating!

but if someone plays guitar aren't they a guitarist whether they are a guitarist by profession or not?
you are acting as if gaming is a profession when it isn't. professional gaming is a profession.

Quality posting as always I see.
You saying it doesn't means I was wrong in what was a number thrown off the top of someone's head at random, and you "not caring" about what I said just proves that you're the usual close minded "I'm right and everyone else is wrong, fuck you" kind of person you've always been when you don't even give a shit about something as simple as a defenition of a concept.

Also she had another saying that if EA does something sexist, she'll buy Activision products instead :v:
You do know some people who play games don't even consider themselves gamers right?
Being a gamer is having gaming as a hobby
It's not difficult to understand
Being named after an activity generally means that activity is a hobby for you
A hobby generally means an activity you have good interest in and put a good amount of time into
End of.
jesus christ 47% of women play video games. stop moving the goalposts so that those fucking sexhaving cunt cheerleaders at school that play facebook games and occasionally CoD aren't in the same category as you, mr. TRUE GAMER that REALLY knows about games and isn't a sheeple, unlike those sluts at school.
guess what: by bitching about what a gamer is and constantly moving the goalposts to exclude more and more women, YOU ARE A PART OF THE PROBLEM. when an article like this pops up, look in the mirror and you'll find the cause.

The graph is 47% of gamers are women, not 47% of women are gamers.
Why would people dissing videogames be gamers.

47% of women play video games period. stop with the bullshit tribalism about what a gamer is and just accept it.

lol what nobody is excluding women, mainly because nobody cares (or should care) whatever you call someone
its beyond me why would anyone even want to be called a gamer, does it gives one extra points?
So, wait, I was wrong about the people I know dissing videogames?

Mainly because...
Not our fault at most.
Girls I know don't usually like videogames at all and call it for nerds.
This is what I said, and that is apparently wrong.
A graphic apparently knows more than I do about my friends and their friends who constantly shoo away gamers for being neck-deep in games.
