I think it makes sense to exclude casual gamers only. For flash style games and some java type games I can do a graphic design and integrated media degree and learn how to do that.
So if I was only interested in that it would make sense to go do that, rather than a full on programming degree and get involved in heavier game dev?

Also I think it's worth noting that from what I see, a lot of the presenters are involved in(or at least disscussing) hardware development not just software and games. So there is women included in that to be considered too.

Any industry or culture that is dominated by guys and has some sort of specific and ever changing set of criteria to be in the culture "for real" is probably toxic in some way and it won't change unless we all hop on board the bandwagon of respecting people.

The solution is two fold. We make scholarships and schools and programs for women who like games and encourage them to get into the industry.

And we have to stop being dicks.
