• Valve Discusses Charging Customers Based on Popularity

I don't think this'll happen anyway. Unless Valve officially confirms this, I'll continue to consider it bullshit.
Valve is one of the few companies that are really "tuned-in" to their customer base right now. To think they'd destroy all of the goodwill they have built by instituting a ridiculous, popularity-based coupon system is denying them credibility. We know better, as do they.
I certainly hope that we're all wrong about what Valve is doing. I don't exactly want to end up being right about this.
Valve's second worst idea after dynamic pricing in css
Dynamic pricing was a cool idea. The best part of it was it made people use weapons they might not have normally.
No it's not, don't be a dumbfuck. He's talked about things of this sort in interviews before: Start around 12 minutes in with his "pricing as a service" thing. He talks about the impact "jerks" have on the online community compared to how likable players/people who host servers/people who develop content are more likely to make the community happier and more profitable, and thus deserve some variety of reward or recognition. In this example he used forcing assholes to watch ads, but making assholes pay extra is entirely in line with the kind of things he's been thinking about. It's a brilliant idea. What happens when you're a tremendous cheating jerkwad? You get VAC banned. What should happen if your presence on a server measurably makes other people leave? You should be forcibly up the fuck shut or given an option of paying for the damage you cause the community. It only doesn't make sense to people looking at the industry differently than they do, and considering they're pretty much always testing everything constantly I'd say they've already got a decent idea of how it could successfully be implemented. I mean, what is anybody in this thread saying the consequences are anyway, they'd boycott steam because they're not allowed to troll anymore? Douchebags don't make up the majority of any game's player base, and if it can be proven that removing them actually improves profitability, then so-fucking-long!
Alright, so i piss off a fucking 10 year old on my own god damn server, and I have to pay out the ass because he was fucking around? Get the fuck out of here.
best part of this people thinking it's real
What about the countless faggots who hate me because I call them "mean names"? Or the whiney little shits who think I'm a prick and just wanna piss me off? There is no way this will work. [editline]17th May 2011[/editline]
best part of this people thinking it's real
Like I said before, i know it's BS, also thanks for breaking my automerge :<
Alright, so i piss off a fucking 10 year old on my own god damn server, and I have to pay out the ass because he was fucking around? Get the fuck out of here.
I think it requires like 10k as much bad feedback as a few kids.
So if something is less popular it costs more? I can see the implementation costs of this idea bankrupting Valve then.
Good they are loosing their game anyway.
Alright, so i piss off a fucking 10 year old on my own god damn server, and I have to pay out the ass because he was fucking around? Get the fuck out of here.
He explicitly said paying for a server would be a way to make up for bad conduct in the video or be meritorious on it's own. I know it's standard practice to knock people for not reading, but can't you even listen?
What about the countless faggots who hate me because I call them "mean names"? Or the whiney little shits who think I'm a prick and just wanna piss me off?
This is coming from the people who focus-test hats. You really think if they implemented an asshat penalty they wouldn't account for self-selection bias and the amount of bad feedback a person gives versus their own popularity when weighting people?
best part of this people thinking it's real
Thinking it's real like a thing being done for sure or thinking it's real like Gabe's actually said these sorts of things? Because he's said these sorts of things. On video. You could probably email him and get confirmation this was a real interview if you doubted it.
No it wouldn't they'd just get it some elsewhere and the fact that you used noob makes me think you're a kid that thinks you're better than everyone else in your age group.
Nah I'm a 20 year old who plays casually.
