This.
I honestly think that the loons at Bad Dragon get more respect (at least from me anyway) than the guys at FurrAffinity. The people at Bad Dragon, or at least most of them know what they like is a fetish nothing more and nothing less. It's a sexual "incentive" for them.
They're still total creepers, though.
Furries love to tell normal people they "don't understand" but I've yet to see one actually explain what it is we don't get. :iiam:
Look, it's not that I'm saying you're dumb or anything, but if you're out of the furry wavelength it just doesn't make sense exactly what it is.
I've tried to explain it before, and even when people are genuinely willing to listen they still don't understand.
It's not just "Hey I'm looking at pictures and they're hot." There's just an interest in furry characters that forms the basis of being a furry. That's why furry is (or was originally) called a "fandom." You can say you're a furry without actually partaking of the porn involved. The "interest" is probably why most furries look at furry porn in the first place, it's just combining something they like (furry characters) with something they like (porn).
So furry at its core is actually just a bunch of people who are fans of art featuring anthropomorphic animals. It's that reason why furries congregate. We all like the same thing. From there people take it to differing magnitudes varying from person-to-person. Likewise, at a Star Trek con, you'll find Trekkies who are just walking around and looking at the exhibits and others who are decked out in a full Klingon costume. They're meeting there because Star Trek is the base interest that they both have.
Inhibitions also wane when you're around like-minded people. It's a comfort zone. If you really like video games, chances are you're a lot more comfortable talking to other people who like them. Otherwise, you have to sweep that part of yourself under a rug if the other person isn't particularly interested. So who are you going to seek out? Sure, it doesn't socially cripple you if you can't talk about something within your sphere of interest, but still... Now imagine furry with all its negative stigma, and you'll hopefully understand why we'd want to talk to other furries about it. You can't get that level of understanding with the average person.
Now if you're curious why furries act like total horny jackasses in spite of all this I just said, it's probably because said furry is either a) looking for attention, b) trolling, or c) being ironic and it's part of our bizarre sense of humor to act like freaks. It's actually kind of rare that a furry is actually as weird as they let on anymore.
tl;dr: Told you it was difficult to explain.
They're still total creepers, though.
Oh absolutely.
But at least they don't dress up as dragons creating contraptions to make them fly while they believe a hermaphrodite dragon soul looks over them in their daily life or that they ARE that hermaphrodite dragon just in human form.
They're just people who like shoving things in their butts.
Oh absolutely.

Now I'm willing to bet that it's true what they say, that most furry conventions don't break out into furry orgasms. I'm also willing to bet that CSI episode probably didn't show a very accurate portrayal of furries. God knows us computer nerds have never been wrongly portrayed in the media before[/sarcasm]. But I really can't see anything else to this than a sexual preference having seen art over the years and having listened to people talk about it. Personally, it's just kinda creepy that they go so public about it.

Your outsider's perspective of furries is even more ignorant than normal. It's just generally a good idea that if you don't know what you're talking about, you shouldn't criticize it.

Like I said, it's difficult to see past the whole fetish part. You'd be right though. I mean, having sex in a fursuit sounds like something every furry would do... but those things cost upwards of $300 into the several thousands of dollars range. I mean, having sex in one of those things is like having sex in a full tuxedo. Maybe it would be kind of cool, but it's so cost prohibitive hardly anyone does it.
i was going through my 7.32Gs of pictures and i saw this article about furries and now i am scared to go out at night (i am still a n00b on this site so i don't know how to post pictures but i uploaded it to tinypic.com) http://i47.tinypic.com/zx1zrd.jpg
This. Everyone's got a fetish, but it's the losers that think liking a certain type of art justifies being called a lifestyle that everyone hates.
Fetish for what? Human anatomy? I'll never understand that argument.
On top of that, are you so dense that you think people who fap to rodger rabbit give 2 shits about what you think is worthy of respect?
Here's a lesson in semantics:

Though I'm willing to consider fursuits a fetish, because they are and they're creepy. But ask your self this, if you were to walk into a con, would you rather see a bunch of bald 40somethings flirting with each other or would you rather see a bunch of mascots running around?
I've met a few furries in outside life and they're the most disturbing and weird people I have met.
Look, it's not that I'm saying you're dumb or anything, but if you're out of the furry wavelength it just doesn't make sense exactly what it is.

Maybe they do understand, and you're not being entirely honest with yourself? Maybe that's part of the "furry wavelength?" I know a couple furries, famous ones even (to furries I guess) and they think most of the same things as I do.
It's not just "Hey I'm looking at pictures and they're hot." There's just an interest in furry characters that forms the basis of being a furry. It's not just an interest in animal characters--that's way too broad to have any meaningful relevance to someone (apart from freakish obsession). You have to throw another variable in there, to give it depth. Otherwise it's just "wow hey guys I saw an anthropomorphic character in a new advertisement on TV, it was very interesting! Everyone should watch it so they can see this new anthropomorphic character!"
I think for most furries the main attraction is fetishistic, which would account for the ~90% liking furry porn statistic from my scientifical study from a couple years ago. I think a significant portion (to wit: those with "fursonas") are drawn to it as a form of wish-fulfillment escapism, of the same breed as self-insertion fanfiction and internet roleplaying in general.

The difference being if you go to a Star Trek site the vast majority of the users don't discuss their collections of Star Trek porn.

Furry's negative stigma is well-deserved. It really IS dripping with porn and creepers who like it.
Nobody who simply likes cartoon animals is forced to be a part of that community. Why would they? What would they get out of it? If every discussion of a new cartoon animal is peppered with requests for "34," wouldn't you leave?

It's mainly attention-seeking behavior, which ties back into the wish-fulfillment roleplaying stuff I mentioned before. The whole vibe I get from furries is a desire to disengage from reality, and a tendency to substitute furry roleplaying for a lack of meaningful social interaction IRLz.

Flirt.
Ontopic:
I've run into a few furries recently, some of them are just random guys with a fetish and don't see the need to shove it in your face. I have one on my friends list. He's a pretty cool guy. Then I've run into some of the other kind. I don't think I need to describe him for you.

The main gripe I have with furries is their over the top publicitism.
Getting on the news is not going to help this at all.
My main gripe about furries is that they try to convince everyone that they're normal.
They are not normal by today's standards, nor were they ever normal. Now that can either be a good or bad thing, but in most cases with furries, it's a horrible thing. They don't seem to realize that whether or not they themselves are rather quiet and seemingly average, the freaks out there are the ones who give them the bad name. But that's their fault for associating with the "sub-culture" of "furry". You jump onto that bandwagon and you'll be grouped together, regardless of who you are or what you do.

The file name.. Argh.
That is not a dog, a wolf, or a fox.
That is an abomination.
I'm not going to lie, I used to draw shit like that a lot. Not because I was a furry but because it was a way to get known in the "art" industry.
Now I know that that's bullshit. Lol.
