Silicon Valley billionaire funding creation of artificial libertarian islands

You are a wise man, DanRatherman- all the wiser for showing Wilhelm II in all his glory.
If I could build my own island it would be centered around scientific research and advancement. The population would consist souly of scientists and their families, professors and students, maintenance crews and other crews needed to keep a city afloat. The government system would probably be a liberal democracy.
A Technocracy would be more practical in that setting...
Also, a certain aquatic city from a certain popular video game that had the same idea comes to mind when reading the article.
Sounds great, until it gets robbed blind by thousands of pirates who are stronger than Libertarians.
And then parkour all over it.
Something like what happened to the Queen of the World from Hydrophobia Prophecy.
no welfare, looser building codes, no minimum wage, and few restrictions on weapons.
I give this a week before the entire population ends up dead.

Meh, sounds like the US without minimum wage and pinheaded liberals.
Meh, sounds like the US without minimum wage and pinheaded liberals.
What exactly is a pinheaded liberal?
A super libertarian island? Ron Paul is cuming in his pants right now. Also, everyone is going to fucking die there. I would never ever set my foot in that hellhole.
Neat!
This is good even if you don't like libertarianism. They can all go somewhere else and not trouble you and either it will succeed and they'll be better off or they'll just destroy themselves.
I imagine it working out to something like this:
Lets say they pull it off, what will they do to people who change there ideology or have children that later on don't support it?
Probably will devolve into violence at some point. Little splinter factions forming here and there, all fighting for control. If not over political ideologies and beliefs, then religion will probably factor into it at some point in time.
This isn't really news.
Thiel says he wants to do this every so often (last I saw of it was in Forbes either early this year or sometime last year, don't remember) and never works up the balls nor funds to make anything of it.
Shortsighted libertarian talking shit. Dude ain't smart, he got rich by riding on smart people.
He's making the islands so he can take all of our money once we get there, you know, like he already does now.
At least until the underclass of poor immigrants revolt and kill their masters, anyhoo.
Nah essentially the micro nation would work in the way, that you would have a bunch of insanely rich people signed up there, companies having seats there and similar to escape taxes.
Think of the place as a super luxurious resort.
Meh, sounds like the US without minimum wage and pinheaded liberals.
Yes, because welfare, minimum wage, and building codes are all those silly Liberal ideas, they're so naive.
Isn't this how Brink started? I know OP made the comparison, but.

i want the liberals to balance out the conservatives though

I'd join ya
I'd join ya
If a technocracy I'm coming too.
technocracy is essentially made by a group of nerds who hate the world and decide that they should be in power

Oh so which one do you suggest?
Oh so which one do you suggest?
the one that's all equal and shit
i want the liberals to balance out the conservatives though
Then the place would be destroyed in a riot.
the one that's all equal and shit
Socialism/Communism is good too. As long as they keep shooting rockets into space and inventing things too.
This would be most interesting, and not only permit new things to rise, but potentially expand the amount of habitable space for mankind to exist in. To be utterly frank, the current format of expansionism we have practiced is outdated and foolish. For thousands of years we built outward across land, and eventually strove to build upwards with our towers of steel and glass.
If we are to survive, we must continue to build not only across the sea, but beneath it, colonising the sea floor. But even if we pursue this course of action, there is also another option; instead of building upwards we should build downwards, transforming the world beneath our feet, one of rock and dirt, into living space.
We could start by modifying the old mines, carving out our buildings in the rock, then move on to carving out stone and dirt to construct further habitations. It'd be tricky and expensive, but with increasing populations we'll definitely need the space.

There's still a lot of land left on the surface. And I mean a hell of a lot.
Oh so which one do you suggest?
Something that's not a technocracy
the one that's all equal and shit
I couldn't imagine an island of intellectuals not endorsing equality for everyone. Things that we find ourselves fighting for right now would be initialized from the get go and be a non-issue. Though I think the ability to vote for your leader would be necessary. The thing about building an island for a specific goal is it would be largely closed off to a lot of people because you just simply can't fit millions of people on a floating city without it costing astronomical amounts of money. You would either be someone with a career in science, a family member of someone with a career in science, or a student working to get a career in science.

Dictatorship? Proletarian or Presidential? Monarchy? Theocracy? Autocracy?

A Republic full of FP Mods.
I couldn't imagine an island of intellectuals not endorsing equality for everyone.
i very easily could, you might define intellectual as someone smart because they agree with all your views but there were certainly intellectuals in past times that advocated doing horrible things.
the problem with a meritocracy is that merit is utterly relative so ultimately the only difference is your tyrant will have a degree.
A Republic full of FP Mods.
And a smartness based legal system.
