ill do it to sabotage it all once we have a few hundred people, then ill proclaim myself king of mars and create a gigantic alien like pyramid. then i would have a harem with minimum two hundred and seventy women to myself. it sounds like a good plan. they shall call me sex king.
I could be the ballast
I will after Episode 3 releases.
i'd seriosly do this, i wouldnt have a problem dying in there too.
i mean, its a whole new planet, one in a lifetime oportunity, no, one in a million lifes oportunity.
the chance of being part of the start of a new era? no way im saying no.
the thought of never coming back to earth scares me
none of you are getting in
you have to have good mental health
I nominate the kardashian sisters
i have a dream now

instantly thought of this when i read wanted lol
So in other words, unless you're a harvard professor with three doctorates, a masters in a division of math that most people didn't know existed AND an astronaut, they aren't interested in your application.
ITT: Space exploration is for elitist space nerds.
It's been my life long dream to set foot on another planet, but I'd like to return home.
I would absolutely volunteer for this, if the recruitment started after my four years in the Army.

Being different for the sake of being different isn't exactly advisable when it might ruin your entire life. You only get to live once, and if returning is completely out of the question I imagine it'd eventually take it's toll on you.
Imagine never being able to go outside and feel the breeze against your face again. Imagine never being able to look up at a nice, friendly, bright blue sky. It'd be an immensely challenging transition to make, and you might end up a broken person because of it.
I imagine I'd eventually go a bit loopy being cramped up in such a small area for so long with so many restrictions and would probably steal a spacesuit and go out exploring one night without permission just because I'd want to be out in the open after being cramped up inside for like 12 fucking years (and I'd probably wind up dying out there because I'd probably lose track of time, the sun would rise, knowing my luck it'd be throwing one of its temper tantrums and I'd get a lethal dose of radiation).
Hell, I guess if you did go and you and enough of your colleagues were desperate enough to return to Earth it might not be ENTIRELY out of the question. You might be able to all abandon your posts doing whatever you're doing and fashion together your own space craft to return back to Earth (you sure as hell wouldn't need as big a one as you need to leave Earth due to the lower gravity, but it'd still be a monumental task to pull off... like seriously an unfathomably large task). Would probably take decades to pull off even with some serious man power, and I imagine if not everybody was in on it the ones who were cool with sticking around would probably try to stop you.

I completely agree. You would have to have some massive balls to go through with this.
Just imagine.
You would probably never physically see your family ever again and everything you know would basically be reduced to null.
We should start a FP clan on mars
If I recall right mars-one is the scam group who says they will fund a mars mission through reality TV.
it's a one way trip btw.
so you stay till you die.
yeah fuck that
none of you are getting in

You'd have to be insane to want to be one of the first people to colonize another planet.
8 years is a long time for a reality show, especially since the climax of the the entire thing won't be reached until after that when Mars life begins.
they could use a medical man
sign me up
"Do you have much experience in space travel prior to this mission? This will be a very long trip."
"yeah I played ksp once"
I'd try and phrase it more seriously.
"I've landed dozens of self-engineered theoretical ships on dozens of theoretical planets and moons and done the math for orbit translation and everything in between many times over."
Someone contact them about only a bunch of members of Facepunch members going up. We will finally be able to say the Facepunch Space Program was a success!

It is in the article saying that they will fund it by a tv show showcasing the choosing of people to go up and what it is like to live on mars.
I'm guessing it will be like the Idol series(s), as that's the only show I know that I can compare that process to. I'm really not sure though. Be on TV show for 8 years, go to Mars, never return home. Personally I'd rather not colonize mars out of all places, I'd rather be in a fucking spaceship and explore with a crew.
On the topic of a long-term Mars colony:
How are they going to deal with crime on Mars?
At least reality TV is focusing on (and thus financially supporting) something worthwhile instead of trashy celebrity wannabes.
