Reading their faq, I could see how using reality tv to fund it could work. The colonization of another planet is indeed an incredible step in human history, and that would no doubt bring in many, many views, as well as sponsors. It's possible, but I personally think they should also seek an alternate source of funding as well, should they not be able to raise enough money through their first option.
On the topic of a long-term Mars colony:
How are they going to deal with crime on Mars?
western style. All crimes will be punished by oxygen supply removal at dawn.
Well, you can't sign up if you have autism, so Facepunch is definitely out of the question.
no thank you, but this is a chance for not living on this planet anymore
You guys are missing the most important thing that we need on Mars.
The Rock.

I'm insulin dependent. I doubt I would even be considered for an orbital mission, much less a one-way ticket to another planet.
Did this article remind anyone of the film Moon?
it's a one way trip btw.
so you stay till you die.
In that case let's send the 10 most hated people on Earth there.
This is going to attract so many oddballs. I hope their selection process is extremely rigorous.

Yeah but no-one on earth has more of a right to say they lived a good life than someone who's on mars

I kinda lost interest at the "TV broadcasted series of challenges with the audience voting on who went" bit personally
Bring a shotgun, guys. You'll never know if an ugly Eldritch abomination might knock on your door.
I swear if I'll lose everything I value in life, I wouldn't think about it twice.
im doing it guys im colonizing mars for real
Awesome. But I wouldn't be capable of handling such a scenario.
If it's a reality TV show, what happens when you get voted off?
I'll wait for the pioneers to pave the way and go trough all the pain and hardships. When we have some way to get there on a comfy chair, served by a hot hostess to then sleep at a good hotel, eating great food at the restaurant and have a swim or two in the pool, I'll go to Mars.
Just set up a facepunch colony and watch it crumble under continuous arguments.
Going to apply for this because why not. Being an Aeronautical Engineer who's had Army experience will give me a better* chance I guess :v:
[SUB]*better than average[/SUB]
It'll be just like Red Faction!
Really the last thing i expected that my country would do is to launch a colonization project on Mars, well we'll see..
I'd do it but im not 18 yet nor do i want to stay there for the rest of my life and it probably wont be cheap.

Cheap? Do you think people will even pay?
Remember that you will die on that planet since you won't come back so the last thing i expect is that you need to pay to go up there.
I've found a guy

Remember that you would not be getting back home, and you would pretty much lose everything you own and love except the little things you are allowed to take with you.
I was one of the very first people to email them about signing up. :)
Each astronaut represents over a $1.5 Billion investment.
I think as a lazy English graduate from a bad uni, I think I am worth that.
Now the hell are they going to do a reality show around it unless they actively pick people with personality disorders?
Otherwise it's just a show about smart people getting on together and solving puzzles.
Regardless, realistically I'm not interested I'm far to invested in doing nothing to do something right now.
It sounds seriously cool at first but never returning to earth and spending the rest of your life with a handful of people on mars sounds miserable.
