I'd rather die before killing and eating my dog There's just no way I could ever do that
Are you really going to feel good after killing a dog that saved your life more so eating it afterwards?
i dunno where the op got the bit about the dog saving the camper from bear attack because the article doesn't mention jack about it
outdoorsman lol
I remember hearing of a similar story. It's a tough decision and one that you'll always regret.
I don't think he'll regret the decision, more just regret that it had to come down to it in the first place.
personally i think i would have killed myself for the dog to eat
i've got a weird attachment to dogs so eating it would've probably never crossed my mind. I just couldn't do it
What we should consider is that in these extreme cases of hunger, we turn to our killing instinct we turn into wild animals, we are even capable of eating our loved ones for pure survival. We stop being humans past that point. Must be horrible to realize that we're still wild animals controlled by instincts, and we have little control over that.
Must be something stupid shit you heard out of a movie. This isn't just an "animalistic wild instinct to survive at all costs", this is just being pragmatic about your survival. There are barely any things more valuable than a human life. What would you chose, die out of hunger or eat the dog? Be fucking honest with yourself, if you let the dog live in cost of your own survival you're either overly altruistic or fucked up in the head of some sorts.
Whats the point of this argument?
welcome to facepunch, where people must out shitpost each other to give meaning to their vapid white lives
welcome to facepunch, where people must out shitpost each other to give meaning to their vapid white lives
sounds like the internet in it's entirety.
This guy had to kill his loyal dog that saved his fucking life because he couldn't be fucked to do a couple safety measures. Fuck him.
Should have read Brian's Winter, could have been living it up eating rabbit all month!
Eats dog because he sucks. The Nottaway river is a couple of days of hiking, at worst, west of James Bay road. You don't even have to be accurate. Even with heavy overcast, a mere guess at which direction is East using the sun would have landed you on the road. Three fucking months, what a joke. Experienced outdoorsman my ass. Didn't even have a knife apparently. Fucking pathetic.
Get a load of this fucking guy.

I guess this is what happens in RL when you roll a natural 20 (or 00 as the encounter die may be) when making the wandering monster roll. Hindsight's always 20/20. Really nothing else to say. We can talk about this until vinegar turns into wine, but would you be able to survive a situation like this on your own? I'm pretty sure the guy feels like shit at having to eat his dog to survive, and this isn't the first time something like this happened either. In fact, the whole thing smacks of neutral ending in a Choose Your Own Adventure book.
There are two major things you do prior to leaving for something like this: A) You always tell someone where you are going, and when you will be back. That way someone comes looking for you. B) Look at a map. Know where to go when things go wrong. These are things that can save you no matter how bad things get. You can lose all your supplies and still have those two things. The guy ignored warnings from the locals about the river, went alone, and apparently didn't even glance at a map prior to leaving. A lack of empathy? The dog is dead because this guy couldn't be bothered to do one simple thing. I am sad because his ineptitude got his dog killed and the article calls him an "experienced outdoorsman", it is ridiculous.
As sad as this story is I agree with this. It really would have been avoided if the guy did some pretty basic outdoor trip preparation 101, and if you aren't experienced in that type of thing then you sure as hell shouldn't go alone. Especially not with your dog goddamn. I mean this is stuff you learn as a boyscout, "be prepared", having someone who knows where you'll be and how long just in case you go missing, having the most basic outdoor tools available so to survive off of incase shit goes down. For this guy, shit went down and he pretty much failed to do effortless preparation before the trip at the cost of nearly starving himself and his dog's life he decided to have tag along too. I mean, I don't want to berate the man because its a shitty situation but its just sad to see it happen when its easily avoidable by just having the most basic stuff with you. It makes me also wonder if the bear attack was preventable, any novice camper in bear territory knows you generally need to bear-proof your food and garbage otherwise you -will- attract a bear to your campsite and risk either losing it all or getting attacked. Granted bear proofing isn't fool proof, but seeing as he wasn't prepared for much of anything when he did the outing it makes me wonder if he bothered bear-proofing at all. I guess this is a sad example of the importance of hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst. If you don't you might end up in this guy's position.
Good dog.
The article said his boat was destroyed by the bear. If you have a boat, you plan your trip around having a boat, and can make long journeys relatively quickly, he wasn't ready to be stranded hundreds of km in the woods [editline]4th November 2013[/editline] it was just a very unfortunate event
His boat and all his supplies were destroyed in a freak bear attack 800km from civilization, but obviously he should have anticipated that and made use of one of his many quickdraw tactical backup boats.

Dog lives are worth more than humans, he should've killed himself instead
Do you not even understand the game you're playing lmao
Yeah, Eve is all about it, but the forums are not. He was a gimmick account and there only to harm users. There is no universe in which the ban wasn't perfectly valid. Gimmick and troll accounts have always been bannable. Well clearly this is never returning to the topic.
