Boy Scouts of America committee votes unanimously to retain gay ban

I was curious to see if there were any numbers re:mormon scouts, and wikipedia delivered.
They've got over 20,000 more troops than the runner up (methodist church, who are alright in my experience) with 100,000 more members.
'hurr scouting is gay anyway, it has boys who do things together' is also pretty damn backwards, on that other note.
Lets make this easy and say it is homophobic of them. And this changes what exactly? If a private organization wants to hold such beliefs, A/ how is it hurting you, B/ what can you do about it anyway
As it happens, they receive governmental funding and free use of government land.
As an Ex-Scout and maybe a soon to be Venturing Scout, this shit's fucked up.

I'm going to sound dumb, but FTFY?

Thanks. Have a heart. <3
It's nice how organizations like this are allowed to publicly discriminate AND receive government funding.
I never realized that the BSA received government funding, I always thought they were private.
For everyone that rated my post about the BSA being predominantly Christian, I was not referring to who owned them. I was referring to the practice of being a scout.
In all my years in the program, it was very much of the Christian persuasion. Mormons were looked against in the same way the other discriminations were.
My view may be biased because of living in the south, but I never once experienced any Mormon influence in my area.

It's mostly in the form of land/park/camp usage as I understand it, which is still significant.

Like I said, the church of jesus of latter-day saints is the largest single chartered organization associated with the boy scouts of america.
I'm not discounting your scout experience, hell the fact that it was unique from others' is part of our point, but them's the numbers.
Oh I also looked back at your first post, minor correction. It doesn't have to be a christian minister, just a minister. They've got those spiffy god and country badges for everything from jews to muslims to buddhists.
I wonder what the boy scouts would do if they found out I was agnostic and gay :(
I wonder what the boy scouts would do if they found out I was agnostic and gay :(
As in if you're in a troop or some shit? Probably wouldn't care
I wonder what the boy scouts would do if they found out I was agnostic and gay :(
Depends on the troop, some would kick you out immediately but many others like my old troop would have probably not have reacted/held it against you at all.

Thank you for being thorough. And, though it may officially be merely any minister, the combination of Scouts and southern influence created a horrible abomination of discrimination in my area. It was made pretty clear to me that I would need to receive the referral from the minister in charge of our troop's meetings. Even if this is not the standard of BSA in general, it was locally enforced.
All in all, the experience was quite bad.
As a Utahn who was in the Scouts when I was younger, I would say it really depends on the location. In my first city I lived in, the Scouts regularly went to museums, did activities, and generally had good fun and I loved going there. When I moved to where I live now, we decorated goblets and read scripture. It really depends.

My troop would have looked down on you, in general. But, besides that, nothing would happen unless the leaders discovered it -- THEN you would have been kicked out.
I feel ashamed to be part of the same world wide brotherhood as them.

It really varies from troop to troop, a lot of it seems to be determined by where you live and which if any church/organization sponsors your specific troop. My group is headed by a Jewish man, and the troop meets at a Methodist church. Any religious discussions are not really directed at any specific religion or any belief at all really. The troop never really discusses sexual orientation, but I believe that it was well known that we had gay/bi members.
I have seen some troops that are ridiculous, on of our local camps had to ban a Mormon troop that was acting sexist and racist toward other people at the camp.
Shouldn't someone sue them for this.

On what grounds? While I do not agree with the policy I do not believe it is illegal, after all lots of private organizations discriminate. Hell the salvation army threatened to close soup kitchens if they had to accept equal benefits for LGBT employees.

The National Scout Jamboree has been hosted on Fort A. P. Hill since 1981. They only very recently decided to a private field established for them in 2013. Funny enough, the theme for this one will be "Go Big. Get Wild."
It is because gays are bad, they do bad things such as "anal sex" which is bad. We cannot let such bad people teach our children because they won't teach them how to do boyscout things such as opening tin cans and using a Swiss army knife. All gays will do is teach the children how to do frilly girly things like gay "anal sex" and "wearing dresses and skirts". I hope you people now understand why gays cannot under any circumstance be allowed in the boyscouts, because they are bad and they are also jewish.
While I disagree with the choice, it really is their choice and they have the right to make it.

I don't think so, not if public tax money is going towards their expenses.

I still don't see how you could sue them, I feel like any legal action would be against the federal government and not the organization. Privately owned organizations have the right to say who can participate. I completely agree that not allowing LGBT individuals from joining is ridiculous, but I still do not think it is illegal.
Also if I remember correctly most of the funds given to the BSA have been cut back or canceled altogether.

So you could either sue the BSA and force them to open up to other individuals, or sue the government to force them to stop backing the BSA.

It would probably be easier to petition the government, but I can see why people are upset about this.
As an Eagle scout I have to say this is bull shit, the people at national level are going against their own messages by refusing gay members. Most troops have no problems with allowing gay members/leaders, why not let each troop decide individually?
Before everyone jumps on the hate boy scouting band wagon, talk to some of your local groups. There are a lot of troops that like my old troop believe this is ridiculous, really it is at the national level where funding/politics come in to play that you find this much ignorance.
Exactly, my troop could give two shits if you were gay/atheist/whatever. It's all the bigoted mormon idiots who run the show that are to blame for this shit.
