http://www.cnn.com/2016/09/08/asia/north-korea-seismic-activity/ fuck
10 kilotons? The Little Boy dropped into Hiroshima was 15. Pretty underwhelming in comparison, but then again here's 15Kt in action, and that's pretty scary-looking. They're not fucking around, it seems.
Why would they even want to do that... they have no motive.
aside from the fact that a lot of countries use our defense systems?
The nearest missile defense system would shoot any NuKe out of the air into the Pacific Ocean (or Indian Ocean, knowing how awesomely competent they are).
It's the end.
every single person who thinks nukes are a good idea even after all the shit they've put us through, is a massive knuckle dragging fool and their very ideology is a danger to literally the entirety of human society. Please fucking STOP NK's stupidity is only putting them in more danger than if they just didn't have them at all.

It can be argued that historically nuclear weapons have saved more lives than they have taken.
Please look into the concept of nuclear deterrence. It can be argued that historically nuclear weapons have saved more lives than they have taken.
Lets be fair though, it also helps to keep attention away from yourself as well I know about nuclear deterrence, but how much more would it have been helpful to NK if they didn't actively pretend to be a threat instead? [editline]9th September 2016[/editline] like the entire reason they 'need' nukes is because they're stuck in the cold war
Just think about why you wanted to stop me from having a laugh
Haha oh wow you went far away, dude. He literally said "better laugh it up while you still can". How did you get that he wanted to stop you from laughing?
aside from the fact that a lot of countries use our defense systems?
What do you mean with that.
The fact that there are people out there still willing to use nuclear weapons is scary
what? if anything it makes me feel safe. if someone knew for sure that the other party's nuclear weapons were a bluff with 100% certainty there'd be nothing stopping a conventional war
Would the MAD Doctrine go into effect if they did launch a nuke at another country?
Would the MAD Doctrine go into effect if they did launch a nuke at another country?
Only if China throws a fit. Otherwise North Korea is doing it solo.
Would the MAD Doctrine go into effect if they did launch a nuke at another country?
No, not really. The same scenario for pakistan and india...they would nuke the shit out of each other. The problem is the aftermath since the rest of the world has to deal with the fallout and all the economic consequences.
Just imagine yourself in South Korea's place. You may feel safe up there in Canada, but those in SK are living in constant fear that NK could strike at any time. I'd feel pretty uneasy knowing that the country across the border has nuclear weapons and was able to test them without anyone knowing
Yeah, and again what are you, or anyone on an internet forum going to fucking do to impact it. I'm laughing about it because that is the only option, you, I, or anyone else who wants to make a snarky comment about a joke is able to do and to add on to this, I have 6 friends who live, lived, or are back and forth between here(Vancouver) and Seoul. Guess what? The South Korean people largely exist in a state of pure apathy about this.
Would the MAD Doctrine go into effect if they did launch a nuke at another country?
No. MAD is a gross oversimplification of nuclear doctrine that only applies once you've shot the hostages.
I was just in North Korea for National day, 9/9. Its pretty much christmas, july 4th and new years wrapped into one. Makes sense they'd go flex their muscles on that day.
Yeah, and again what are you, or anyone on an internet forum going to fucking do to impact it.
you could, y'know, take it seriously the general public's attitude of "hurr durr north korea can't actually do anything lol" isn't a very safe one
It's arguably an attitude cultured intentionally by propaganda agents from NK. Regardless, NK doesn't have any significant payload delivery system and their military is 100% a joke. They should be taken seriously, but understood as well- they are a potential threat in the future, but right now they have all the salience in geopolitical power exchanges of a 12 year old. The big concern is China, but China is distancing itself more and more from NK as they have really nothing to offer a growing economy.
