Still a while off from anything useful though, much less feasible on a mass scale.
Interesting stuff though.
[QUOTE]Oh wow. That was that I was thinking too, though I didn't talk about the slow replacement/progressive upgrade bit 'cause it sounded too crazy. Replacing neuron after neuron with better processing components wouldn't destory the soul, merely augment it. 'cause I want ME to enjoy my biohardware, not a replacement that looks like me, acts like me, and thinks it's me. My body belongs to my conciousness, the ME me, not the other me.
But progressive brain replacement seems a little more far-off than basic biohardware at the moment.
Also, i've just thought of another question: if the brain is kept concious by machinery after being removed, and then transplanted into the head of another person (with their brain being removed as well), would your conciousness be transferred into that new body with your brain?
Man, it's like so many science-fiction elements are coming closer and closer to the modern age...

Interesting argument. I think it unlikely anything like a fully mechanical brain replacement happens any time soon. However, this whole 'replace your brain with a machine' thing... hmm.
I'm not a neurologist, but I was under the impression that the brain functions by a series of neurons transporting electrical and chemical impulses, correct? If so, replacing them with a mechanical piece of micro-engineering is perfectly feasible, but, after all, what happens to 'you'?
I don't believe in a 'soul' as some kind of ethereal organ or entity that inhabits a body, but I think it's important to differentiate between brain and thoughts. If you want a comparison, think of the difference between hardware and software. Your brain stores thoughts, as it were, and is constantly running, even in a kind of passive state during comas and such things. People recovering from brain disease and damage often lose memories, change personality, and even IQ level, after all, so it seems there is at least some proof. These electrochemical impulses are surely your thoughts and consciousness, and therefore if they can be stored and transferred - via the correct syntax, ha ha - to a fully functional mechanical system, they would surely retain 'you'.
I reckon this could get deeply philosophical. I love pretending to be an expert in any field.

You called?
This pretty cool. I'm a little excited to see where it leads.
