GPs call for soft-drink tax and banning of pre-watershed adverts - "junk food should be treated like

How about we start treating marijuana like cigarettes before you start treating junk food like cigarettes.
Do they? Not tried them myself, take everything black with no sugar these days. Sweeteners do have some health concerns of their own worth considering

I actually think I've experienced this before, specifically with 'Diet Coke with lemon' when I was first diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. If I drank it then the insulin I injected combined with what was left of my pancreas would cause my blood sugar to drop like a stone.
Regular diet coke didn't have the same effect though if I remember right, and since my pancreas is gone now I don't feel the same blood sugar drop anymore.
No one's banning anything
What would you suggest doing about obesity anyway?
The reason so many poorer people have weight problems is that crap food is generally the cheapest. So imo as well as giving junk food higher taxes, they should also lower taxes on healthier food to balance it out
Under VAT, healthy food has no tax applied (stuff like veg, meat and pasta/rice), and animal feed is VAT free as well. However, ready meals are ALL zero rated for VAT, so maybe change that into:
1)Healthier ready meals (moderate or lower levels of sugars, fats and salt) still have no VAT applied
2) All others get reduced rate VAT charged on top?
I buy raw vegetables and meats and do the cooking myself.. its typically about the same as a big mac meal when it comes down to cost. I don't understand the expense of it, plus it tastes better. Then again, not everybody has the time and will to cook.
The cost of healthy food is better measured in cost per calorie, junk food is generally cheaper in that respect.
Also you have to calculate costs necessary for storing fresh food, ie big vs small fridge and the power consumption difference.
Another thing to consider is if local grocery stores even have a good assortment of healthy food available to sell.
Not all groceries necessarily have a good stock of things like fruit and veggies because they need more power/equipment to deal with them.
And then there is also the time aspect to consider, like you mentioned.
How about ban cigarettes all together...out of all things that is legal to consume, cigarettes is by far the deadliest.
How do you feel about mandatory extensive drug trials before medication is allowed to be marketed, or regulations regarding the maximum levels of things like lead and mercury in foods
You can go to a science shop and chug a gallon of mercury if you want. You just can't have a company sell you something and tell you it's safe when it's not.
How about ban cigarettes all together...out of all things that is legal to consume, cigarettes is by far the deadliest.
Yep, 10 billion dollars of income for the government down the drain. Why would we ever do that now in the current economic situation we are in. Cigarettes should never be banned; they generate a great amount of income for the government, and some people enjoy them.
How about ban cigarettes all together...out of all things that is legal to consume, cigarettes is by far the deadliest.
the main reason to not ban cigs is because it's a stupid idea
The US government invests around $10 billion a year in corn farmers so they can produce extra corn and sell it cheap for high fructose corn syrup, making soft drinks cheap. its called redistribution of wealth and thats how economies function.

sales tax on food in Illinois (don't know about other states) is 1% anyway.
It wouldn't make a significant difference to have 0% tax on healthy food.
I have an idea, how bout instead of spending all their money fucking with companies. Put money into education and awareness!!! Jesus Christ, it would be more effective anyway.

Talking to kids doesn't sell. Products and taxes do.
How about you fuck off. I can put in my body whatever the hell I want.
It's funny that if this was a cigarette thread and someone said this he would be showered in dumbs.
Facepunch.

Wouldn't this technically be gaining money by taxation?
By the way, I think this is a worthwhile idea. When I was on a trip to the UK I noticed how cheap soft drinks were compared to back home.

Britain doesn't use corn syrup because of EU regulations, that's why Coke in Europe tastes different to American
You can go to a science shop and chug a gallon of mercury if you want. You just can't have a company sell you something and tell you it's safe when it's not.
That's not an item being sold as a consumable product. Until soft drinks are sold in science shops they fall under the veil of food regulations

Because it worked SO well with alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy, and every other illegal drug ever, right?

But alcohol isn't banned.
And aren't the illegal drugs consumed less than the legal ones?

Any visit to any high school ever will show that its pretty much equal.
No it shouldn't because smoking a cig isn't the same as eating a fucking burger or drinking a damn soda you fucking ignorants that cry at the sight of a Coca-cola.

I don't know, I'd say a soda is about the equivalant of a cigarette in health. They put 60 grams in a single can. One step towards diabetes. I don't get why people want to drink soda anyway, juice is much better.

Even a huge binge of sugary foods occasionally won't have any effect on your health, especially if you actually do anything more than sit on your ass all day.
Smoking is something you would literally be better off never doing, however.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prohibition_in_the_United_States
At least the first line reads Prohibition in the United States was a national ban on the sale, manufacture, and transportation of alcohol, in place from 1920 to 1933
Any visit to any high school ever will show that its pretty much equal.
I don't think you can narrow consumption down to any high school.
And that also seems like a huge generalization, but I can't prove anything from Denmark.

I stopped having sodas/Coca Cola as I started getting headaches from it. And I never have those gimmick medicines, if I have a cold I just stick to saltwater and breathe and spit out, or honey and lemon drinks to get rid of it. At least I might be ok.

The only time I drink cocacola is at party, and it's not ""diet"" version. Also, i do get headaches if i chew gums for long like an hour, I got that when i was much younger, in early teens, wasn't following the alternative media on the net yet, I chew gums for maximum 5 minutes just to get the intended effect of having fresh breath, and that's it, very little snacks. in teens we did birthday parties with tons of stuff but mostly we didn't go for hardcore sugar-rich stuff, and half of the stuff was domestically produced.

i like food
I dont think that taxing stuff you dont want people using is the solution.
I feel sorry for kids with high-school drop out parents, whose dole money just pays for shit food all the time because the parents don't know better.

That image is half-way full of shit. It says that aspartame is a product of genetic engineering, as if that were a bad thing. People are shitting on GMOs like they're poisonous, yet there's GMO rice that's been developed to help with vitamin deficiencies in developing countries. Also it doesn't state dosage on the rats. It's more likely that they were fed lots of it every day for 76 weeks and then developed tumors, yet even a heavy drinker for years of diet Pepsi(my dad), has had no problems aside from weight gain.
