That's a good thing.
If machines did all of the work humans currently do, no one would have to do anything.
If we keep replacing jobs with highly efficient machines, eventually people will work less and less hours, until they barely have to work at all.
It used to take working all day of a family working just to make enough food to be self sustaining, now you work 8 hours a day and you can feed your whole family.
Besides, people who work in car manufacturing are overpaid.

ITT: No one realizes what post scarcity is.
Damn, I was just about to post Wikipedia's article on post scarcity. Well, here it is anyway: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post_scarcity
So? Why is that so world endingly bad? People with time off? HOW HORRIBLE. If that were to happen, which it won't, because machines don't replace work 100%, people are still needed for the machines to work. Etc. And then wouldn't there become more white collar jobs?
You know what? Your whole concept is just stupid.
Machines repairing machines.
Besides, my entire argument was if machines could, I never said they would.
They could easily cut the working time of the average person in half, yet everyone in this thread makes it seem like that's the end of the world.

The regular 3d Printer costs about $10 per cubic inch of material
This involved metal, so it was probably more expensive.
Also, this thing sounds really unsafe.
I can't wait for 3d printers to replace regular printers in households, where they can enter the ultimate phase in printer life - the "fuck you" phase.
Basically
"Oh gee, I need to 3dprint this cube for my project due tomorrow! I'll just model one and off we go!"
*zooot*
*zeeet*
*hghghghlghlghglhghlghl*
"Oh Jesus Christ printer what are you doing oh god that's not a cube stop that oh god so many dildos glargalhlarlga help glhalgalra"
I would buy and drive that car in a heartbeat. I love my Prelude, but that thing is sleek.
I've gotten to play with these 3D printers before, and they're pretty wickedly awesome. In high school I took a mechanical engineering class, and the final was a project of our choice utilizing the 3D printer and AutoCAD. I modeled a Chromehounds style quad-treaded battletank/robot thing, and got to print and paint it. The thing was about eight inches long and maybe six inches wide. Lots of cannons and missile launchers and miniguns and whatnot.
Awesome project, awesome technology.
People who are angry @ sloppy_joes for speaking nothing but the truth are brainwashed and terribly close-minded.
On topic:
This is a rather excellent development! With a 3D printer and the right CAD programs one could accomplish great things. When 3d printers become commonplace, I'm sure there'll be a great explosion of creativity in a new direction.
Also,Claytronics come to mind.
You do know that there would still be people designing the cars and maintaining the factory, as well as jobs further down the line in marketing, sales, transportation, etc.
Doubt it. Artificial Intelligence will be much better at doing these tasks. Human existence will emphasize on having fun, if anything. People will still do creative things, but not for profit because there will be no profit to speak of in a post-scarcity world.
TBH One of the great problems with our society is that most people don't really know what they want, therefore many can't be happy. And many also need what they can't easily get to be happy, and many still never get around to getting that. It's very sad.
In a world that has overcome scarcity, this would not be a problem of course.

This is some high-tech shit right here.

In a capitalist society a company will not hire people for more than is needed to make the job attractive to those who have the necessary skill set. The lower the amount of jobs for a sector the more attractive the remaining jobs look to those who have the skill set. The more attractive the job (minus pay) the less the salary has to be. All this means is that the companies can hire fewer people for fewer hours for fewer dollars. Your ideal society where companies pass along the profits to employees is naive, stupid, and completely ignorant of how the real world works. The idea is for a company to gain profit, they are NOT hiring people for their own good will, just for as long as they are useful.

Which is why we need government regulation.
Government regulation took us out of the industrial revolution, if you force companies to cap hours, or have a high minimum wage, you can effectively force them to hire as many people as you need.
[editline]13th November 2010[/editline]
Besides, if we had few people working for companies, those companies would have colossal profit margins, and you'd screw up the value of the currency.

I can't put my mind around the idea. What would even be the point of living if you didn't have to do anything ?
ITT: No one realizes what post scarcity is.
no more like itt people realize that it's never going to happen and to even allude to it being a possibility is balls to the walls idiotic
Actually living instead of being a wageslave bound by greedy rich people who create artificial scarcity?
I really can't imagine that.
I'm just not capable. Call me close-minded, but I just can't.
I can't put my mind around the idea. What would even be the point of living if you didn't have to do anything ?
There are many fun things to do. You would have all the time and money you'd need to pursue your hobbies.
Also, the point of living is producing offspring before you die.
But if you think about it, this wont kill the economy. The car manufacturing industry will die, but the 3D printer industry will be born
or, you know, the car manufacturers purchase 3D printers and continue to make the parts, only cheaper and then they sell them cheaper and everyone's happy because the parts cost less and the car manufacturers have more money to give their employees
3D print Alyx Vance.
Gotta fuckin' love Manitoban technology.
when will it print flesh

It's a possibility, but yeah pretty much.
jesus christ 200mpg how the hell
It's not that impressive.
Modified cars can get 125+ MPG, and that's with an inefficient internal combustion engine.

Yeah it's a good thing for the companies, Not for the thousands of employees who would lose an assembly line job. But you are right, those people are paid insanely too much for lousy ass assembly line workers... the Nissan plant in Murfreesboro they got about $80 an hour, with benefits and all that
