I seem to remember people saying something similar about computers.
True, but some people still lost their jobs.

And who said that people would totally neglect education at all?
It's nice to know that people on facepunch don't actually enjoy learning as a passtime.
My point is that people would most likely make little to zero care for learning information if someone/something did it for them all the time.

First of all you are completely forgetting human nature and how its always possible for a crazy individuals rise to power.
If everything would be reliant on machines using EMP's you could destroy entire economy's and destroy a HUGE amount of food supply.
To get to this point would take YEARS not 100 but earlier a 1000.
I truly do not understand how you can be so naive and trust humans to not fuck shit up at any given opportunity.
At this point saying that 1000's of people losing they're jobs is also just insulting to them.
Besides I doubt the cars are even safe the material of the body is quite likely extremely light and fragile.
What do you think would happen if a SUV would hit this tiny car.
Besides every human is different there is always crazy people that enjoy doing fucked up things.
In a world where everything is available including knowledge what would stop a single crazy person of dropping for example an EMP bomb.
Nothing AT ALL.
Knowing human nature there would also be a HUGE amount of people who would not enjoy this style of life.
Bored people do things they are not supposed to do.
Also how do you plan on doing law enforcement the people would be too lazy and the cops couldn't detect crime properly.
All in all this idea while a nice thing to day dream about thats all it is a dream that will either never be achieved or will suck just about as much as this life.

Faraday cages block EMPs, and why do you assume people have EMPs in the first place?
Also, why do you assume people are evil at heart?
If you had everything you wanted, why would you need to go around fucking things up?

I strongly disagree, assuming people had extra time, some people might get motivated to learn how to fix things naturally, and they would naturally want to fix things. For example, I fix my friend's computers if they break, not because I expect anything back, it's because it's what I do.
People like feeling productive.
Not everybody has the choice of a sane mind some people are born crazy.
You're assuming that because everything can be nice it will be nice.
You're forgetting that a lot of people like bad things.
Do you think all criminals would stop being criminals if treated well.
Also to the point of faraday cages you can break those to means other then EMP.
Using multiple attacks of different sorts that are easy to do you could easily break such a world.
People like being productive but if they are always outclassed by machines a lot of them won't feel a point to it.
While you may think of it as a utopia I am absolutely sure that people would still be bored a lot.
You are completely forgetting the random element that is always involved with humanity.
Besides everybody in power would try and stop this ideal because it would destroy they're purpose.
How do you think you are going to educate the millions of Africans that are incapable of using machines.
How do you think you could stop the gangs from owning everything and getting in a new goverment that doesn't suck.
Even if this "utopia" would be possible it would take 1000's of years.
You would have to practically unite EVERYBODY for this to work.
SO you would have to fight through nationalism religion.
Even if you could get it to work we don't have infinite room here on earth and if people would keep expanding food would become more scarce and the elite/famous would be the ones getting food again.
Also even if this would work a single war or turmoil could rip EVERYTHING apart.
In this world also everybody is always trying to stand out and be unique.
There are alot of people no matter how smart they really are that do extremely stupid things just so they stand a chance at being slightly more popular.
This idea doesn't work for the exact same reason as communism:greed we always want everything and that will never change.
Now you might say infinite supply of goods due to machines being highly advanced but there is always something that not everybody can have.
Like attention people will be fighting to stand out and in a world where everybody has everything that means people will probably do ANYTHING for attention.

The amount of idiocy in this one post caused me several aneurysms.

Ever heard of a little thing called a nuclear bomb? And there's no way can slap a Faraday cage on ever single piece of electronics.

You don't have to be Thomas Hobbes to know that it only takes a few bad seeds to cause a lot of troubles.

Well it's nice to know that everybody in the world is a clone of you.
make the 3d printer print more 3d printers
This looks like what would a Ikea car would be like.
God damned awesome.
How'd they make the light fixtures and wiring? With the printer?
If so, :aaaaa:
Nah, it's only the body.
For a forum like Facepunch with all its "science" I thought it would be rather obvious that it's only the body and not the whole thing. 3D printers sure are cool, but I think many here are over estimating their current capacity.
I mean how do you define a car?
Is it the body, or the whole thing with all electronics, the tires, the lamps and all that stuff?
Now I can print 3d-copies of my ass and send it to everyone I know.
-mergebreak-
Gentlemen, brace yourselves, for the future is closely upon us.
I've actually seen before how it works in some Discovery documentary. It's insane.

Fuck Hobbes, Rousseau was right.
I don't understand, did they build the car and all of it's parts using the 3d printer, or just it's body? If it's just the body, that's honestly not very impressive.
I want a white one so I can compare it to a MAC mouse.
How the hell do they get any reasonable production speed and production cost? 3D printers take hours to make a design that's only a foot on each side, and they're expensive to run.

It's still a fledgling technology, give it time to be refined.

I do agree with that, most people would eventually be bored of being lazy and would be encouraged to be productive.
There would almost always be something to do. There would be jobs out there we couldn't even imagine to exist.

So, how long before we have mass effect omni tools? And how long before we have affordable 3D printers that can work with multiple feedstocks like metals and plastics?
MiNE!!!!!!
If robots do most jobs, we could do research and space travel and stuff.
Anybody interested in the subject of machines taking care of all labor, please read: "The End of Work" by Jeremy Rifkin.
Essentially, the book asserts that we are moving towards a society with far less work. And it isn't a bad thing at all.
So explain to me why jobs can't be replaced with machines.
We take away all the jobs because we have machines doing it for us.
How do you earn money to buy things produced by the machines? Jobs are hard to find as it is, the last thing we need is machines doing them for us.
