The main reason I like debating with religious people is because I feel that if I get them to question their beliefs at least a little bit, I've done my job. Religion on an individual basis can be fine, but I think that religion as a whole causes the majority of the world's problems. Wars, politics, logic, social structure, everything is way too influenced by religion. The world would be a better place if religion didn't exist, not to say that you shouldn't have faith.
You're forgetting that I'm not a politician, I'm just a normal person. If you're job is making people question their hope and morals, making them lose any sense of security in a crazy world and society they live in, then you're a pretty sick person. I don't have much in life, but I keep hope and faith, and that's what drives me. Because of religion, I strive to be the best I can, and my personal goal is to contribute something to society, and to be remembered for it. I want to do something rather than just watch life flash by:
What are you talking about? I'm atheist and I can't wait to die, that shit will be SO cash no more problems or anything, just pure nothing.
Religion influences me this way. Say I do lose faith, then what? Life would no longer matter to me, and then I'd end up becoming just another person, like lil_n00blett, waiting to die. I don't keep faith because I want to go to la-la land when I die, but because I want to have a good life, and I want to make other people's lives around me better as well. Why would you want to take something like that away from me?
Fucking mind blowing I must have that broom

So because you're religious you are motivated to make a difference? I would love to contribute to the world, but I don't have to be religious to want to do it. My view on death doesn't make me not care about life, it just makes it easier knowing the my problems will be gone when I am. You passed a very big judgment saying life didn't matter to me and that I am just waiting to die. It's from my point of view that by letting people question their beliefs makes their lives better as well. They're no longer constrained by the lies the church tells them. I'm not taking anything away from you; I'm giving you freedom. Just because I don't believe in a god or the afterlife doesn't mean I don't want to fix the world's problems, why in the hell would religion affect that? If you are solely motivated by the thought of going to a better place when you die, then not only are you ignorant, you're not really in it to help others, you're in it for yourself.
What are you talking about? I'm atheist and I can't wait to die, that shit will be SO cash no more problems or anything, just pure nothing.
I am not judging you, I am just quoting you.
I am not judging you, I am just quoting you.
I like how you skipped the part where I said "that shit will be SO cash." Typical of someone religious, to pick and choose what suits their side, huh?

I want to help people, and I never said you didn't. You said you couldn't wait to die and rid yourself of the worries of the world. I'm merely basing my argument on what you're giving me. I was quite obviously joking when I said I "can't wait to die." You basically said I didn't care about the world.
You assume religion only exists as a way to control others and because people want somewhere nice to go when they die. You miss that it teaches morals, and it aims to make people better themselves. Don't kill other people, love each other, share, and help each other live happy lives. I guess that's a pretty fucked up thing to believe in. I'm trying to prove the point. That's the point I tried to make from the start, but you turned it into a shit-fling.

I didn't start this over her comment, I started it because you said something along the lines of "oh, sorry I have something to look forward to when I die." To which I responded by saying nothingness would be pretty great, too.
Yes, because if it weren't for religion, humanity never would have figured out that it was wrong to murder or care for your offspring.
Not entirely, but religion helped speed up the process.
Not entirely, but religion helped speed up the process.
Monkeys don't have religions, but they form tribes and manage not kill each other. Besides, religion causes more bloodshed than any other factor with the Crusades, the dark ages, the Inquisition, etc.

I'd post a video, but I don't want to get banned.
Actually, rival tribes tend to invade each other, and rip each others limbs off. I'd post a video, but I don't want to get banned.
Of course, but the same thing happens today with rival human tribes in the less developed parts of Africa and South America. And hell, they have religion.
But then I could argue that some kid who knifes his teacher in school only did it because he's an atheist. Though religion teaches us not to kill each other, our primal instincts cause us to do it a lot of the time any way. Just because it teaches that way doesn't mean people always listen. However, I can only speak for my religion, not others.

However, I can only speak for my religion, not others.
Our primal instincts tell us a lot things, but they also tell us not to do a lot of things. It's more logic than it is religion. "Stab teacher" or "Don't stab teacher." Choosing the first option means a lot of factors led up to that, including that the kid who stabbed his teacher has some lacking in logic.
But then you have people who kill just for the thrill of it, or even for reasons they don't know. Ex: Ted Bundy, Charles Manson, etc. Ted Bundy was in no way an idiot (Charles Manson, probably). Then there's the Ukrainian Thrill Killers. They kill for the hell of it. Why? They lack morals, and obviously primal instinct isn't telling them not to do it. Are they religious? I wouldn't think so, and I see no way that religion could influence them to do something like they do.
But then you have people who kill just for the thrill of it, or even for reasons they don't know. Ex: Ted Bundy, Charles Manson, etc.
Most serial killers don't kill for the thrill of it, they are motivated by religion, including Charles Manson.
Static. Also Hikarikuen took the only good Pun :argh:
Most serial killers don't kill for the thrill of it, they are motivated by religion, including Charles Manson.
A cult case. Once again, you are stereotyping religions. [editline]04:08AM[/editline]
People like the Ukrainian Thrill Killers are very rare cases.
Not as rare as you'd think. They just got caught, there's more than likely many like them who haven't. Anyway, can we continue this later? It's 4:08 a.m. here, and I need some sleep for a Trig test tomorrow.
Oh for fucks sake, this thread has turned into a religion/atheism argument.
I think it's pretty funny, because I read over everything, then look at the thread title. [editline]04:10AM[/editline]
Oh for fucks sake, this thread has turned into a religion/atheism argument.
Well, you can thank JohnnyMo for that.
A cult case, once again, you are stereotyping religions.
What? I wasn't stereotyping religions, I was only saying that most serial killers are motivated by religion. Another good example would be Jim Jones and the People's Temple. Or the Scientologists who let Lisa McPherson die because they didn't trust doctors who didn't follow their religion. I probably shouldn't use Scientologists as examples because they're all whackjobs, but it's only an example. [editline]01:12AM[/editline] You can go to sleep, I'm pretty tired here as well. Nice debating with you though.
CNN? What the fuck?!
I <3 CNN! They broadcast my comment on their live coverage of Inauguration Day 20th Jan 2009. :smug:
Yeah, good debate. But before I go, I'd like to specify. All religions aren't the same. I can see how you'd like to make some people question theirs because of its dangerous beliefs, but not all religions are terrible ritualistic ceremonies, and I'm trying to make you realize that.
Someone's hacking the Earth server... :ninja:
Lol, reminds me of this video:
You've got to be kidding me. My dad has making brooms stand up like that since like 15 years ago, the reactions from people and employees are hilarious.
Congratulations they discovered the broom's center of gravity.
lol Prattville, that place smells like rotten eggs.
