They are not doing this for charity, they do this to make money.
It's for a good cause in the end so who cares. One of our clients at work is GlaxoSmithKline who we had in the other day, this is pretty awesome.
I'm not speculating, it's an observed fact that patented medicines are extremely expensive, since nobody can compete with the company making the medicines. Source: http://www.lakareutangranser.se/uppdrag/Access/Tillgang-till-lakemedel/ (MSF, Swedish) Due to the TRIPS-agreement, countries are forced to enforce these laws even if it greatly hurts their population's health. Also, let's take a look at the export chart of the UK: It's not a coincidence that the medicine industry makes the most money, and is steadily increasing as the patent protection becomes even tougher. While this is good for the economy of the UK, it's extremely damaging for the health of the population in poorer countries. The governments of the poorer countries or charity organisations won't be able to afford the costs of giving everyone vaccines against malaria.
That's because drug development costs about $1bn now and a company wants to make that back. If they're lucky then they can break even before patent runs out. Like I said, they have to work out a market model that makes the most profit. They may have to reduce the profits earned from individual products to sell more. There's no point making the prices so high that the only people who can afford it are those in developed western countries who have much less demand for it.
