• Gates: Microsoft will merge Phone and Windows platforms

I think this could be used in a very practical way but it also require you to have the right device. Like lets say you're doing a project for school and you have to head to school at that point. You save your work on your desktop and take your surface with you. When you have the chance you can just open up your surface and the document will be right there for you to continue to work on. And for any school related work you have, if something goes wrong, rather than having the hardass teacher you may have tell you "It'll be late", you can just pull out your windows 8 device and retrieve it right there.
Windows 7 is an upgrade to XP, and Windows 8, regardless of what anyone thinks of Metro, has multiple superior aspects over 7. Stop using 10 year old software, and get out of that little cave
windows 95 master race
bill sounds like kermit
People act like they have to buy W8, and that they have to use the Start Menu every 2 seconds. You just put your shortcuts on your desktop and bam. That is it.
My problem still lies in the fact that I can't get folders in the start screen to be collapsed. There's a reason I have shit in the start menu. It's because I have more stuff in there than can fit onscreen at once.
But...who even wants them merged? It's convenient sure, but you end up with a universal operating system that isn't really suited for either platform.
That and we already have a universal OS that runs on phones, desktops, servers, satellites, ARM, x86, PowerPC, etc: Linux.
windows 95 master race
omg windows 95 so hard to use.. "start menu" what?? where is my prog man!
That and we already have a universal OS that runs on phones, desktops, servers, satellites, ARM, x86, PowerPC, etc: Linux.
Not sure if flamebait.
omg windows 95 so hard to use.. "start menu" what?? where is my prog man!
windows 95 was hipster before it was mainstream to be hip
Still find it funny how I'm peacefully enjoying Windows 8 so much while FP complains about how "terrible" it is. :v:
FP should honestly be really happy about what he's saying, I don't get the rage. Bill Gates basically directly said in the video that he wants to integrate things like touch screens without edging out the mouse and keyboard that PC users want to keep.
Not sure if flamebait.
Eh, when I posted it I thought 'FP wouldn't rage over this, I am agreeing with them'. I was trying to show that a universal OS can work.
I'm all up for future advances of technologies. Lets face it, ever since the iPhone and iPad everything these days is going to be touch screen (I know this stuff was around before then but it's definitely way more mainstream now because of those 2 products). As a company, Microsoft have to jump on that wagon in order not to be left behind in the technology market. Whether you guys like it or not, this touch screen shit is going to be the future market for computers and Microsoft are doing the right thing by coming out with their version of it so they can start being the leaders of it. I can imagine Apple soon following pretty soon, I predict their next laptop will be quite similar, and then will sue Microsoft for stealing their idea.
You're a fucking idiot Bill Gates.
If you seriously think you're smarter than Gates, well, then I really don't know what to say.
I think this will be very interesting so I'm all for this, you got to take risk when your in Bill's decision
I am still expecting some update to the UI. Metro is horrifying to use as well as it's sluggish. They should add an option to change the user interface types already.
I think this will be very interesting so I'm all for this, you got to take risk when your in Bill's decision
Last time when Bill took a risk, We got Microsoft Bob, Yeah no thanks.
Oh god in the video he looks old....dont die bill
Last time when Bill took a risk, We got Microsoft Bob, Yeah no thanks.
Wow just discovered the geek emoticon on msn was from
Last time when Bill took a risk, We got Microsoft Bob, Yeah no thanks.
and then you'll complain about ea and how their games are all just sequels and not original at all if you want something new, you need to take risks
Eh, when I posted it I thought 'FP wouldn't rage over this, I am agreeing with them'. I was trying to show that a universal OS can work.
There's nothing universal about an individual distro. My router runs DD-WRT. That's linux. I can't exactly use that on my desktop, in much the same way I can't use gentoo on my router. You need to be a lot more clear when you say 'universal OS', because as I see it, I don't think it exists, or even can exist in the immediate future. There are universal cores, but no overall OS. Watching a movie? Great, phenomenal even. Typing a 30 page report? Absolutely horrendous.
Still find it funny how I'm peacefully enjoying Windows 8 so much while FP complains about how "terrible" it is. :v:
specifically ones that never used that "terrible" OS are calling it "as bad as bloody diarrhea at work"
It's articles like these that made me glad I didn't go into the world of software. I think the recent shitfucking of all the major OS makers is going to cause havoc. I for one will not be using Windows 8. Universal solution for my £1000 desktop that runs rendering operations the same as a £200 phone that plays nifty little apps and allows me to browse on the rare occasion that I can't use a laptop for that? No fucking thanks.
I thought this was obvious since first Windows 8 showcase? [editline]23rd October 2012[/editline] I mean, not even metro - more of the whole shop thing and the other more core things... But considering what how sales of the Surface are apparently going, it's clear what way is Microsoft going to steer the whole thing.
I think it'd be awesome to have the same OS on both phone and desktop. Sure, the phone might not be able to do everything the desktop could do but it'd be neat to be able to run desktop apps on my phone.
Oh god in the video he looks old....dont die bill
He's just 56 years old. I think he's aged quite bad.
You're a fucking idiot Bill Gates.
No doubt you're smarter
How hard is it for Microsoft to understand that people want to be able to turn metro fucking off completely, surely they can't be so mentally challenged as to be unable to include the original Windows 7 start menu as a simple option, instead they are forcing on people an ugly, slow and highly inefficient start screen in my opinion, sure you can replace it with a third party menu but you should not need to do so in the first place. Microsoft are fucking idiots if they think people are going to upgrade to that heap of garbage, certainly the more retarded people will do so but anyone who cares about efficiency and having a consistent desktop will remain where they are. One can only hope the next release is better, but I would not bet on it.

I also think the start screen is a borderline train wreck for my particular usage case. You aren't helping make any points, and are, whether you are aware of it or not, making people like me who are trying to be reasonable, look ridiculous. Please shut up.
Why dont we have a rating when we need one... Because honestly... Fuck Microsoft... Let Steam for Linux come out and see where I go to!

The underlying OS can work fine, Android, your router, a NAS, my desktop all have the same programs and kernels and whatnot, but the frontend (GUI) is different. Windows 8 is pushing things too far.
