To each their own, you are fully within your right to be vocally upset about a post.
This kind of thinking is what allows them to do this in the first place.
All of the paranoia about the government tracking everyone's whereabouts and reading all of your stuff seems to be... well, just that: paranoia. Really over the top paranoia too. I bet if a loved one ever went missing you'd want the authorities to be able to remotely turn their phone on and track its whereabouts, or access their text/email history to see if anything suspicious was going on that might explain where they went, and yet when systems get put in place that could allow for such things, or just generally catch criminals off guard (possibly preventing them from committing more, and even worse crimes) people whinge about it.
They're not going to waste processing power scanning for images that should be watermarked and then slapping a fine on you, they're not going to waste processing power scanning for pirated movies and music, they're not going to waste processing power scanning for phrases like, "lol I stole a Mars Bar from the shops!"; they're only going to be searching for the worst, most heinous of crimes (and I think we can all agree that this type of thing is pretty up there).

They spend shitloads of money paying for human enforcement and detectives, why wouldn't they use cheap code and processing power?
is anyone really using email for anything these days other than account verification?

Once you get a big boy job you'll start using e-mail a lot more.
I wouldn't be surprised if he emailed the photos to himself :v:

And could you imagine how much more they'd have to spend on man power to double check the info, make inquiries, and arrest/fine people for minor crimes? Pretty much every person in the western world probably breaks one or two small laws here and there (pirating being the most obvious one); those kind of crimes aren't worth the time or effort, let alone the money that would be required to pursue them when there's more serious shit happening (like people exchanging child pornography).
All my university documents, projects and messages to colleagues. I don't like that tbh, i don't want some random google employee knowing everything about me.
"Some random Google employee" doesn't know anything about you. These are automated scans raising an alert. Depending on how accurate that alert is, it's possible nobody even has to look in your mail account to confirm illegal content. Also any person at Google looking through your mail, without there being a damn good official reason, is breaking the law, I'm fairly sure. At best it'll get them fired.
Aside from that, there's an insane amount of e-mails sent and saved every day. The chance of anyone randomly picking and looking at your account in particular, and then actually giving a crap about its contents, is miniscule.

You're likely going to be using internal or self-hosted email if you're working. No company worth their salt wants to rely on external email services that are known to scan emails, makes you look like scrubs if you handle anything remotely sensitive.

If some guy on Google is getting his rocks off my to old job applications and fanmail responses then I say let him.
..And then you get those supped-up Metro police...
You mean CPs?
*rimshot*
I can guess how they probably did it, and it's surprisingly privacy non-invasive.
They already have an algorithm that lets you image search the entire internet. I bet on their own back end they can do the same thing to all gmail messages. At that point they just ask the FBI for a list of images to reference, and scan through them one by one.

Well... if you have a job that requires you to correspond with co-workers. Gmail is a bit more reliable than facebook.
