But I mean come on I must be a fucking retard so who cares right?
wow persecution complex.
but seriously if you think that mass effect 2 isn't much different from mass effect 1 you must be blind.
The changes in game mechanics are so incredibly minor that most aren't much more than streamlining and tweaks, while the core gameplay remains identical. Since they're part of the same story arc there's not much point to arguing which has a better story because they're both just parts of it. People make a huge deal over pretty much nothing as usual.
Minecraft is overrated.
Way opposite.
wow because we totally could not have guess any of the games on this list
10: Civilization V
Although a good game, from game dev standpoint offers no new or interesting tech, shouldn't be on the list.
9: Mass Effect 2
Except for visuals it doesn't have any interesting tech either
8: Minecraft
Huge destructible worlds, kinda deserves a place in the top.
7: Fallout: New Vegas
Maybe for the modding, otherwise offers nothing.
6: Rock Band 3
Nothing new at all.
5: Starcraft II
Nothing new here either, just an RTS
4: Super Mario Galaxy 2
Not sure, haven't played
3: Bayonetta
Devil May Cry clone, offers nothing new
2: Super Meat Boy
A sidescroller that doesn't offer anything new. Though it does prove that 2d games can go commercially on a wide scale without having to have a brand name. Kinda deserves the place at the top list.
1: Red Dead Redemption
Kinda does and does not. Even though it uses euphoria and whatnot, so did gta4.
That's my opinion from gamedev side.
10: Civilization V
I've yet to play it, but by viewing gameplay videos it's does a lot more than Civilization Four on the concepts of strategical placement.
9: Mass Effect 2
Over-rated. I can't really say a lot more than that. If you take out the cut scene spam, random relationship crap, and repetitive side quests you basically are left with nothing more than a very big multiple choices game with story lines which really don't differ no matter what you do.
8: Minecraft
Addictive. It's not exactly the most moving game, but like Garry's Mod, and many other games it's simply addictive.
7: Fallout: New Vegas
Other then it being released way too earlier in a somewhat beta phase... It retains quiet a good story, but it's still over-rated.
6: Rock Band 3
I can plug my guitar in, and use it as a game controller? Awwww' yeah.
5: Starcraft II
Drama Paradise.
4: Super Mario Galaxy 2
:frog:
I'm not very happy about this....
3: Bayonetta
I can't lie... I've never heard of this. I'll check up on it sometime, but it sorta goes to show I need to get back to looking for new releases.
2: Super Meat Boy
The music is addictive, but the gameplay is just somewhat a repeat of Super Mario Brothers.
1: Red Dead Redemption
I hate to admit it... I hated this. They made a great game too much like GTA4. The ending felt just to cliché.
how the fuck do they make RDR superior to ME2 in any way imaginable?
Even though I loved New Vegas and it's one of my favorite titles this year, there's no way you could put it inn the top ten from a gamedev point of view. It was buggy as all hell and the animations are TERRIBLE as usual for a Bethesda game.
[editline]1st January 2011[/editline]
Plus it was released with an extremely bad NPC lag bug that wasn't fixed until like 3 weeks later.
Mass Effect 2 an RPG? What the fuck? How can you confuse an RPG with a cover based shooter?!
Another list that is over 50% sequels.
Out of curiosity, why is that a problem?
A good game is a good game, despite who makes the game, or if it's a sequel.

By not being a gigantic tool.
Why are so many of you using "but it doesn't offer anything new" or "much work wasn't put into it" as an argument against a game being on the list?
Last time I checked, the games weren't put on the list based on the amount of new content they have or the amount of work put into them - they were rated based on how much the players enjoy it. Or the rater(s) in this case. Of course new content and a polished outcome lead to those things, but are not always a neccessity.
I'm actually quite happy to see a few indie games making it into the Top 10 list.
(Next up: someone saying I base my opinions on the game being "indie")
I'm sorry no, swap RDR and ME2.

Because
site that's about game development, not game playing

Because
Oh, didn't really check the site before that.
The list, however, seems to be the "Top 10 Games of 2010" list, not the "Top 10 Best developed games of 2010".
Even if the site focused on dog breeding, they wouldn't have to base their "Top 10 Games" list on dog games if they didn't want to (now why would a dog site have a Top 10 Games list? That's a mystery.).
Gamasutra staff discussed the games that made the greatest impressions on us, and decided on a list we feel represents the greatest 2010 has to offer -- the games that will remain in our memories as having defined the year for technical sophistication, storytelling, innovation, and pure intangible experience value.
Yes, that includes "technical sophistication", but also "innovation" and "intangible experience", plus "storytelling", which can all be achieved without huge development teams and years of development.

Not really streamlining. Mass Effect 1 is far more of an RPG, while Mass Effect 2 is far more of a shooter. I don't really call removing the entire inventory system and omni-gel system as minor tweaking, I see it as more of a large shift of direction.
Mass Effect deserves GOTY
Red Dead Redemption is good but once you beat it you just let it collect dust.
Mass Effect 2 an RPG? What the fuck? How can you confuse an RPG with a cover based shooter?!
Because it's not like that at all.
That's how. DURP.

Anyways, the arguing this list has spawned in you guys is fucking hilarious. Every game on that list is a good game, and I enjoyed all of them. i have very little bad to say about any of them. I'm just happy to be a gamer in a time where games are becoming a true "art form" as it were or becoming more than just games.
But go ahead, show your "objective" opinions down everyones throats until they agree you have perfect taste. Seems to be all you can do.
Glad to see Minecraft and SMB on that list, let's me know that Gamasutra's does not have a big-developer-only mindset, like IGN and Gamespot.
But I highly disagree with RDR even being on that list.

It's the exact same squad based tps gameplay with a different hud and reload animations added in. The inventory was still there in a slightly different form where armor and weapons weren't just the same models with a new texture. Omni gels were that thing you made if your inventory and credits were full until your omni gel count was full at which point you randomly spent them fixing your Mako or something stupid. In fact they were made pretty much completely useless if your Mako never lost anything past its shields and you had at least one tech character to raise those shields and open crates for you. In the end the effects of these changes are almost always overblown, it's still just a sequel that bridges the first game with the last, and I think it does it pretty much perfectly.
I hated civ 5, It's a disgrace to strategy games.

lol I guess my fun in that game was imagined.

RDR is a good game, have you even played it?
lol I guess my fun in that game was imagined.
That's just my opinion - turn based strategy games aren't nearly as fun as real-time strategies.
I sum up RTS with the following...
Build fast, rape, then build higher tier stuff fast, then rape some more.
Then your enemy rage quits, because he's still stuck on the first tower.

You can sum up any game like that.
FPS games: shoot, talk shit ingame
MMO: get good loot, talk shit on vent
"Mario Galaxy + Yoshi yo" placed?
Wtf.
I'm tried of seeing Minecraft everywhere its not even that good.
