don't we have BETTER shit to deal with? like you know... tons of things? How is this important at all?
From the phrasing there, this could ban jailbreaking but it could also ban oscilliscopes, function generators, logic analyzers etc. as they are often used for getting around hardware blocks so called 'hardware hacking' It also bans all the software used by security experts to check and test network protection strength etc....
I can accept that unlocking/jailbreaking voids your agreement and takes away support from your carrier but I really don't want it to be outright illegal
The world is truly run by idiots.
as much as i'd like to see something positive in this, no, that interpretation would be incrorrect. the use of the word or means that services [that only have a limited commercially significant purpose] or [have no other purpose than to circumvent any effective technological measure] are both reasons for prohibition i'm curious, how much support does this have in the EU / Council of Europe? because hasn't the EU passed a law / commercial directive that you CAN'T lock phones to a specific provider? i remember reading a story like that a year or two ago if they did indeed pass such legislation i can't imagine there'd be any reason why they'd support this treaty or ratify it
Jailbreaking and carrier locking are generally two different things. And the reasons for the ban on limits to carrier locking are different to changing how a device operates. It's closer in line to the legislation that forces OEMs to use microUSB and which allows you to take your phone number from one carrier to another.
I can accept that unlocking/jailbreaking voids your agreement and takes away support from your carrier but I really don't want it to be outright illegal
Generally speaking most legislation doesn't generally focus on personal use jailbreaking, but it considers it illegal to offer a service, even more so for money, wherein you jailbreak for other people.
Eh, restricting unlocking is nothing compared to the US and AUS promotion in the TPP for ISP copyright enforcement.
