"They made me jump out of the water for a crowd" Whales sue Seaworld
Shut up PETA. If they didn't like it they would attack whoever is in the water with them.
It's not that simple, not by a long shot. While they don't always get violent(though it does happen), cetaceans do go insane from being kept in those tanks - restricted movement, noisy crowds fucking with their echolocation, all sorts of things. Remember that cetaceans are mad intelligent, almost as intelligent as us, so don't think they're too stupid to realize that they're imprisoned.
out of all the things that happen to animals this is the thing they're making a thing about?
ok
People are capable of caring about more than one thing at a time, it's just that they're putting animal mistreatment by Sea World in the spotlight in this particular instance. Calling them petty for not caring about something more important instead is like calling gay marriage advocates petty for not caring about starving African kids.
it sounds more like jumping on the hate peta wagon.
i mean there are plenty of reasons to hate peta, but in this case they're actually trying to do the right thing.
I don't see how anyone can know what a creature is thinking and try to speak for it. For all we know, it could be having a whale of a time.
Stupid PETA.
If PETA had their way these animals wouldn't be getting captured in the first place.
You're right, they'd be killed 'so nobody can capture them.'

They also teach their young.
I don't see how anyone can know what a creature is thinking and try to speak for it.
well there are these amazing things called, expressions and emotions.
their purpose is so that we can tell what a creature is thinking or feeling.
well I know there's the ASPCA but I don't know if they're any better
ASPCA actually tries to get the animals they rescue adopted to new homes, or released into the wild when they belong there.
(didnt mean to rate you dumb hit it by mistake replying)

allways feel the need to post this in a peta thread.
PETA is shit. They could be drawing attention to any other cause that has a valid point, but instead they throw a shit fit about a whale who has it fucking made compared to almost any other animal.
Before I even opened the thread, I thought to myself, "I smell PETA's handwork at play here."
no it's more like a motel that you can't leave.
AKA a nightmare.
Motel California?
PETA is shit. They could be drawing attention to any other cause that has a valid point, but instead they throw a shit fit about a whale who has it fucking made compared to almost any other animal.
They have it made in the same way an inmate in super-max has it made.

Yes, but expressions can only do so much.
And emotions don't count as they are not a form of communication - they are something conveyed through communication (like expression). For example; you can look at someone and see via their expression that they are sad, but you can't just automatically tell that they are sad.
And whale expressions are not as fully understand as humans. We can not talk with them. We can not read their facial expressions. We can just about do simple things such as figure out that it might be ill if it isn't eating.
So, no, PETA can't fully communicate with them and speak for them.
Yeah but it's likely that the whale trapped inside a little box away from its family and other members of the species is not happy about that.
i mean we know enough about animals to know that animals don't like that so to say PETA shouldn't defend them is ridiculous.
Was reading then I saw PETA. Then I was all like fuck this.
-PETA Picture-
She's... against giving birth?
The hell?

Except I wasn't really saying that.

We actually can talk to dolphins. They can't talk back yet in full sentences yet but we've been able to get them to answer simple yes or no questions. Some researcher is working on two way communication by essentially teaching them Morse code, since they already use clicks to talk within their own species.
Keep in mind, these are bottle nose dolphins, but Orca are just as good at communication.

You're essentially teaching aliens how to speak English. The only way were going to do it is through some different medium. We'll never be able to just walk up to a dolphin and talk to it. However, given their ability to recognize sentences and shapes, I think we might one day be able to teach them a human language.

Sorta ironic that the dolphins in the video are captive. The two way communication research is being done from a boat in the dolphins natural tribes.

Good for the gene pool imo

Indeed. But I was talking about whales.
i giggled quietly due to the mental image i got when i misread whales as wales
Indeed. But I was talking about whales.
But this thread is about Dolphins. Orca are dolphins. They are as related to whales as a bottlenose dolphin is.
...belonging to the oceanic dolphin family...
woah I did not know this
Yeah, they'd just execute them instead. PETA kills more animals than most animal shelters do, they also don't support owning pets, which are valuable companions to many people, and in many cases they have been the sole cause of people surviving life and death situations in remote areas, not only that but the bond between a man and his dog for an example is a fairly known bond, the dog and man are akin to a pack or family of sorts. I know for sure I'd do anything to protect my dog and she'd do anything to protect me.
Fun Fact: I was part of a rally of local animal lovers and shelter workers that counter-protested and ran PETA out of town when they came here because of their hypocritical bullshit they do.
It's not really wrong to call them a whale because they're all cetaceans, but orca are distinctively Dolphins in that they're in the Family Delphinidae. Wheras what you would usually call a whale (humpback, blue, minke, etc, etc) is in a different Family of a different suborder in the same Order.
But this thread is about Dolphins. Orca are dolphins. They are as related to whales as a bottlenose dolphin is.
They are kind-of both.
"The toothed whales (systematic name Odontoceti) form a suborder of the cetaceans, including sperm whales, beaked whales, dolphins, and others. As the name suggests, the suborder is characterized by the presence of teeth rather than the baleen of other whales."
So they are dolphins, but also whales.
But to clarify, I was talking about Orcas. Killer Whales. Those black and white things.

And so was I. Orca are incredibly intelligent and have near, if not the same intellect as the dolphins in the video I posted.
they get paid in fish treats for rewards
To be completely honest, containing an animal that large is really cruel
PETA is right
NO. It is cruel, but PETA isn't right.
PETA is never right.
I can say that they experience behavioural and physical changes that one can assume would cause distress in a sentient being
http://www.helium.com/items/1510837-effects-of-captivity-on-whales?page=2
They actually experience some symptoms typical of depression in humans - no desire to mate, and mothers express disinterest in their children.
Their lifespans are also much shorter in captivity, and infants often die.
Then I say let them go.
