Oh PETA, never change.
And please move to another planet, I like it here.
it sounds more like jumping on the hate peta wagon.
i mean there are plenty of reasons to hate peta, but in this case they're actually trying to do the right thing.
Broken clocks, etc.
Next thing will be trees suing us for making paper out of their families.
Or making trees convert CO2 into O2
We actually can talk to dolphins. They can't talk back yet in full sentences yet but we've been able to get them to answer simple yes or no questions. Some researcher is working on two way communication by essentially teaching them Morse code, since they already use clicks to talk within their own species.
Keep in mind, these are bottle nose dolphins, but Orca are just as good at communication.

You're essentially teaching aliens how to speak English. The only way were going to do it is through some different medium. We'll never be able to just walk up to a dolphin and talk to it. However, given their ability to recognize sentences and shapes, I think we might one day be able to teach them a human language.

Sorta ironic that the dolphins in the video are captive. The two way communication research is being done from a boat in the dolphins natural tribes.
They can also communicate with us too:

Tbh after seeing the various amounts of information posted here I must agree with Zeke (for the most part).
It depends on how they are contained. Obviously if they have only a small area to live in that isn't good at all, but if it is to scale of what other creatures live in I don't entirely see an issue.
Basically that, but only for a few months at the most or else it may take a toll on the whale's health. So big environments, plenty of treats, and release after a short time-span.
PETA is still a horrid organization and I hope to see it abolished and replaced with a less needle-happy group, however.
PETA is so silly, I remember when they accused Mario of animal cruelty just for wearing the skin of a Tanuki raccoon.
Here's Mario's response, by Dorkly. :)
Nothing with a brain that big should be randomly plucked out of it's life and made to do tricks for the rest of its days.
I do not understand why there are so many dumb ratings for people who a agree with this.
Whales and Dolphins think, learn, teach, reason, ect.
Whales control their sonar to no hurt other whales and Dolphins have cultural differences depending on their pod.
I would say that the same courtesy we have for not being enslaved and eaten should extend to intelligent animals.
You have to remember these animals never got to use tools and expand in the same way we did, due one not having fire and two not having hands.

because these goddamn self-righteous hippies have the NERVE to make me think about the greater implications of my action and inaction
So the whales get good food and are constantly cared for, and PETA thinks it's slavery?
I can't even fucking relate to how stupid PETA is.

Would you want to be locked in what is essentially a small box for decades?
Cetaceans are pretty damn intelligent; probably not human level, but they can form cultures and possibly language.
Shut up PETA. If they didn't like it they would attack whoever is in the water with them.
Oh christ, not an Onion threa-
PETA claims
Oh, that makes sense.
You're right, they'd be killed 'so nobody can capture them.'
PETAs bad track record in terms of domestic animals doesn't really apply to their efforts to protect wild animals
They euthanize so many cats and dogs because they want to save money - it's despicable, but killing wild animals wouldn't save them a single penny so they wouldn't do it
It depends on how they are contained. Obviously if they have only a small area to live in that isn't good at all, but if it is to scale of what other creatures live in I don't entirely see an issue.
How do you put the whales habitat to scale in an aquarium? You really can't don't they migrate all over the ocean in packs and stuff? Don't whales get depresses and all that like we do? They're social animals.
Not saying that whale is unhappy but other whales have killed the trainers before so it is somewhat of a legit argument.
They get fed and get to do flips all day! I wanna do flips :(
I expected satire...
Those orcas have better lives in those tanks than they would in the wild. At least coming from a comfort level. They get fed daily and have plenty of room to swim around in.

nope

No they don't. See the fin? It's bent like that only because it's in captivity. It's like locking a human in a 10ft by 10ft box and saying he has enough room to live the rest of his life.
[editline]8th February 2012[/editline]
Orca diets consists of Seals/sea lions, sharks, Fish, and even other whales. Feeding them fish is not enough. There's a reason why their lifespans are reduced to half that in nature. Because keeping a large animal in a small box slowly kills them.
[editline]8th February 2012[/editline]
Orca hunt as a pack, It's a family event. It's a choreographed hunt, passed on through local generations and not something they know from birth. Each little hunting method varies between families. They have culture.

peta's actually right in this for once
but, like usual, they're trying to change it in the stupidest way possible
I went to sea world once
it was horrible
Some big fat lady trampled over a small child and nearly killed her over trying to get a chance to pet a fucking dolphin
And when her parents confronted the fat lard about it, she essentially said "no fuck u she had her chance" (when she never did)
So the whales get good food and are constantly cared for, and PETA thinks it's slavery?

You should read the thread because I think you can better than you know.
People have to take into account the difference between any whale's life in captivity compared to their life in the wild, especially when it comes to signs that they are greatly disturbed by this entire business as in the droopy fin. Since they started catching Orcas in the 60s, there is a ridiculous number of them dying in the process, in captivity (as in within the month of their capture) or being depressed for the rest of their short life. I wouldn't actually support PETA but they are doing something right here.
I really have no opinion on the subject :/
I mean keeping animals in captivity is bad and all, but they are not being mistreated in any way. Other than them living in a smaller area and being away from their families, they are basically pampered. (Actually I don't even know if whales actually even care about family because I usually only see pictures of them alone except when they're really young with their mothers)
Shouka was seaworld's pride and glory, she got the best medical care money could buy. I don't like seeing animals in captivity, but it seems like a byproduct of capitalism... Think of it this way: Shouka could have lived out in the wild, gotten slaughtered by a whaling ship, and then sold off to make soup. Or, she could have been rescued from getting slaughtered and instead put into a facility that, although smaller, gave her top of the line healthcare, made sure she'd never go hungry, protected her from predators, and as a byproduct gave joy to the millions of people that saw her, and also created tons of jobs for people that staff her exhibit. All from one animal.
I know it's a bad thing to justify a bad act by rationalizing it to make yourself feel better, but honestly, It's not at all as bad as peta makes it out to be. Some animals have to be kept in captivity. If zoo's hadn't gone around and gathered up members of a certain species, they would have gone extinct to poachers in the wild. There's tons of species that only exist in zoos. The reason we had to go see shouka in seaworld was because not enough of them exist in the wild anymore. PETA should focus their efforts on the real cause of the problem, illegal whaling. Take all that lawsuit money towards getting a boat and go pester Japanese whalers.
[editline]9th February 2012[/editline]
Also unrelated question, does anyone know how they transported shouka from sea world to six flags marine world when they sold her back in 2008ish? I have no idea how you would even go about moving an animal that big 500 miles.
[editline]9th February 2012[/editline]
I don't disagree with peta, I simply believe there's much more efficient ways they could be spending their money. Battling the source of the problem instead of a single issue.
I really don't think they care that much, they have clean water, good food and they only have to show their natural abilities and follow rather small and simple orders in order to earn their place.
They can also communicate with us too:
Still one of the greatest books ever
I really don't think they care that much, they have clean water, good food and they only have to show their natural abilities and follow rather small and simple orders in order to earn their place.
So if we lock a normal person into a 3x3 meter box but give him all the food he needs and a Rubik's cube, he won't care?
If anyone other than PETA had done this, I assure you the "dumb" and "winner" ratings on the OP will be reversed.
Do you even know how pampered those things are? It's more like living in a five star hotel where your every whim is catered too and all you have to do is jump a bit.
against your will :eng101:
If anyone other than PETA had done this, I assure you the "dumb" and "winner" ratings on the OP will be reversed.
That's because PETA is not a respectable organisation. It impedes what it sets out to acheive rather than pushing it forward.
