Zika virus: World Health Organization declares global public health emergency

Good thing i dont plan on having children
I have a bad feeling someone intended this to happen.
We shouldnt fuck around tho, and im certain we aren't since theres probably people working on it right now, but the more the merrier.
I'm currently in Bali getting bitten the fuck out of mozzies at night. I've heard zika is mostly transmitted in mozzies which bite during the day so hopefully I'll be okay.
Hopefully this means they will not hold the Olympics in Rio. The IOC is clearly fucked when they're even considering bringing people from every single country (literally, even fucking North Korea) to a country in the midst of a global epidemic threat. It's not really different to trying to hold it in Sierra Leone two years ago. No 'protective measures' are going to prevent the spread of disease like this, not when it's insect-borne. Anyone who's been around mosquitoes can tell you they will get you eventually.
We need to find some way to introduce a biological pest control to the mosquito that will spread throughout the wild population. The vector carrying the disease is Aedes aegypti, and it exists in large parts of the world. If the zika virus was spread to Asia and Africa we would be in deep shit, so it must be contained. A parasitoid (parasitic organism) that is known to thrive on this species of mosquito would be a great control agent, if it could somehow be introduced into the population in large numbers it would probably help I think. Parasitoids have proven successfull as control agents in many previous cases, and I dearly hope it will in this case. But I bet they got some of the finest minds on this case so they are probably already considering these methods.
This is with biological pest control it is so much better then chemical pest control like how insecticides does, since it focuses in on the problem species and doesn't affect other still desired species. Plus, the problem species doesn't become immune against the biological control agent after x amount of generations like it does with many insecticides.
My sister and others are composing an idea to possibly create a "gene" of sorts for mosquitoes to have the diseases/parasites that they may carry kill them or activate something that could make them infertile.
Still allow the creature to be consumed by wildlife but cut down significantly on virulent populations.
Well at least it won't matter if any FPers get bit, since we don't stand a chance of having babies anyways
Well speak for yourself.
Or just breed millions of bats?
I think scientists could release small fish to eat them. I'm sure there's endangered native species (or at least something like mosquito eaters) that could breed fast and eat a ton of the larvae at least in larger pools of water, while also feeding larger fish and animals.
Also poor babies. I hope they can make a vaccine fast.
the only way to avoid it, is to not be bitten by the "aids mosquito"??
that's just fucking great.
Jesus, and I thought Dengue fever was the only thing we have to worry about. And it's spread by the same species as well.
Mosquitos were a mistake.
