well then whats the point of even caring about it if we won't even be able to reach it?
Because we've cashed this planet out. It's about to fall apart, along with every single damn country on this God forsaken rock. Shit needs to change quicklike.
ULLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Dum Dum Dummmmmmmmm...
Wouldn't it be a mindfuck if they had Christianity on that planet aswell.
I'm guessing that would prove there was some force to put us all here. Cause the same religion on 2 planets that are 20ly's away is just a complete mindfuck. It be a even bigger mindfuck if they looked like us as well.
How fast does radio signals move? Slower or faster than light?
Exactly the same speed as light. All electromagnetic radiation (visible light, radio waves, infrared, microwaves, ultraviolet, X-rays, gamma rays and everything in between) travels at the same speed in a vacuum. [editline]01:37AM[/editline]
Wouldn't the radio waves take a long fucking time to get to us?
20 years, yes. Hence all the timespan issues. We have to get used to waiting, like I said. [editline]01:38AM[/editline]
I'm guessing that would prove there was some force to put us all here. Uuh, Didn't we find like, a signal from space called the Wow! signal? It could have been from them, just rebounding off of spacejunk.
Uuh, Didn't we find like, a signal from space called the Wow! signal? It could have been from them, just rebounding off of spacejunk.
No sir, the Wow! Signal came from the Sagittarius constellation, whereas Gliese is in Libra
I just realised wikipedia has this at the bottom of pages about planetary systems. So cool. [editline]02:11AM[/editline] okay, it's just for Gliese 581. Darn, that would look nice on every page about planetary systems.
and thus,it becomes reality......
Quality media right there ^ Title: REAL Alien Message from Gliese 581/c
Sucks, you would really want to be alive for the time we have colonised this shit. The future seems so fucking awesome.
Wouldn't the radio waves take a long fucking time to get to us?
All electromagnetic radiation -- from radio waves to x-rays -- travel at the speed of light. I read something about changing the states of a proton/electron or something and they could make it colder or warmer and using that send information by reading what state it was in. So far 20 miles instantaneously IIRC.
But even if they got our radio signals, could they hear anything?
I'm guessing that would prove there was some force to put us all here. Cause the same religion on 2 planets that are 20ly's away is just a complete mindfuck. It be a even bigger mindfuck if they looked like us as well.
Stop. Shut up. You're going to start a horribly prejudicial argument. There is no fucking christianity on that rock. And there shouldn't be any on this rock.
20 light years away.
Lets pack our bags and leave now. We'll be there in 20 years. :buddy:
Of course there is more intelligent life out there. Out of the 40 billion planets, there WILL be more life. We are just aliens to all of them too. It is stupid if you don't think there's anymore lifeforms anywhere. Also one thing people say is that for a planet to be livable, it has to have the traits of Earth? Well would've some lifeforms had different needs. I am pretty sure it would be completely different for different places.
Wow, think of all the new lush plants and organisms. Amazing, I really hope to live to see at least a rover of some sort land there.
I actually just saw a show or commercial with this guy saying "death is just another disease" he also said "If you live to the year 2045 we should be able to keep you alive another THOUSAND YEARS" fucking crazy! [editline]04:44AM[/editline]
Of course there is more intelligent life out there. Out of the 40 billion planets, there WILL be more life. We are just aliens to all of them too. I could not imagine a little blue monster asking his mommy if there are aliens. Also, whenever i think of alien worlds i think of starfox for the gamecube
I think if they had satellites, we'd be getting their radio transmissions anyway Keep in mind the timescales of these things though, we only developed radio 110 or so years ago, and it was a while before it became as widespread as it is these days.
Not quite. For one thing, with modern transmissions techology without the specialized electronic goobries to make sense of it, most transmissions can easily be mistaken for natural backround noise. And it is unlikely that they use similar codecs. So they may be past the point where a radiosphere is a useful indicator. Second, radio isn't that useful over interstellar distances. Gets too attenuated. (Don't know the exact figure at which it gets illegible.) You need lasers for that. And lasers are a very focused form of communication by the nature of the technology. You need to aim it at the person you are talking to, you can't just hit the send button and have the signal move in every direction like radio. Very little chance of getting in the way of a transmission in progress. It is practically uninterceptible on the interstellar scale. And unlikely to be used for talking to anyone except colonies, probes, manned starships and known friends. So we are unlikely to overhear alien soap opera analogs or anything like that.
Science thread. :argh: Damn my non-sciencey understanding!
Even if we make travelling at the speed of light possible humans wouldn't be able to, I think we will need to develop worms holes and the ability to send something to create a receiving end of a wormhole at light speeds to somewhere like near this planet. Imagine being able to reach this planet in less the distance of the moon, just outside the earth atmosphere.
How fast does radio signals move? Slower or faster than light?
Radio waves move at the speed of light AFAIK Edit: It appears that I'm incredibly late with this.
I'm sure scientists are working towards faster and more efficient engines for space ships. By the time we are 40 it may take say 100 years to get there? I'm just being optimistic but with the current rate of research breakthroughs we are bound to discover better and safer engines soon. Maybe even hover cars? I mean that new Lambo only weighs 999kg and is over 500 bhp. Quite an invention isn't it?
And yet you still think its possible to just Hop Skip Tra la la your way to that planet in a few generations time? Never in a Million years. Or at the very least 70,000ish at Voyager's speed Even if we launched when we were neanderthals we'd still not be there
Someone doesn't know about project orion :v: Uses pre existing technologies and it would get us to a ridiculous speed very fast.
It's be fucking amazing if that planet ended up inhabiting Humans as well.
if we do go, make sure no religious fanatics go, the last thing we want is people trying to covert aliens to Christianity
Wouldn't the entire idea of alien life fuck up the base of Christianity, since another life somewhere else than on earth was never mentioned?
I call it Planet Hawking
Or ETA Hawking. From Mass Effect.
I'm glad we haven't discovered life on other planets. I doubt we ever will. I don't believe in life on other planets.
There are about 400 billion stars in our galaxy alone. If each of them have the same number of planets (on average) as our own sun, then that's about 4 trillion planets in our own galaxy alone. Multiply that by an estimated 125 billion galaxies in the universe ... that's a lot of planets. And you're saying there's no life anywhere but on our little planet?
I wonder if we'll ever find a planet with what looks like human-made satelites around it.
Better not find any life, I am sure people will become obsessed with their culture too, like space-weaboos.
Probably already been said, but it would be funny if everything there was exactly the same as it was here.
