Cultural slang being oppressed by the media and its political correctness. Nice [editline]10:26PM[/editline] They're trying to get rid of what makes humans special, their cultural dialect.
So many people say retard but don't mean to insult disabled people. It's almost synonymous with stupid now.
It always HAS BEEN.
cause to move more slowly or operate at a slower rate; "This drug will retard your heart rate" be delayed check: slow the growth or development of; "The brain damage will retard the child's language development" decelerate: lose velocity; move more slowly; "The car decelerated" idiot: a person of subnormal intelligence
That's literally what it means.
Cultural slang being oppressed by the media and its political correctness.
It's not even slang.
Uh yes it is, of course it is. [editline]10:40PM[/editline] Calling people gay is slang, the word fuck is slang, and so is nigga
why do people get so riled up over words? words are words, fucking deal with it
This is pointless, any new word they use to decribe retarded people can still be made derogatory - Special Needs "You spesh, Oh you're special". PC is a whole load of bullshit. Isn't she within her rights to use this anyway? It's a word, "to retard" is to like, hold back or be delayed. The French use it. But anyway, I agree the general definition of retarded isn't what it used to be anyway, I'd consider it means someone's an idiot or being dumb.
It always HAS BEEN. That's literally what it means. It's not even slang.
Stupidity and mental retardation are two totally different things. I used to have a friend who was a genius in terms of mathematics, but he was mentally retarded in nearly everything else apart from his motor functions. Compare that to a kid who has nothing wrong with him, goes to school everyday, but mucks around in class and abuses teachers. That's stupidity.

[editline]10:40PM[/editline] Calling people gay is slang, the word fuck is slang, and so is nigga
It would be slang if it weren't the correct definition. Calling someone "retarded" is linguistically correct.
Stupidity and mental retardation are two totally different things. When you couple the word with "mental", it refers to a type of physical degredation. When you don't, it is a term used to describe someone of lower intelligence (or slow, or whichever definition you pick depending on the context).
aka slang
Wow, why didn't I think of that?
I literally just posted the definition.
I must've missed it man, relax. I was more rhetorical discussion than actually asking for an in-depth definition, but thanks.
