Good point, but i still see no need to switch to the wheel.
Whatever I got bored after playing through the first one once it's just this one seems only slightly different and people are making a big deal out of it.
Why bother? It looks like everyone took roughly the same amount of damage either way.
This is going to be a great game that I will buy. Anyone just skipping it over some elitist smug sense of superiority is going to miss out.
Just for the record, this is probably a pre-pre alpha, so comments about how the game looks "bland" and how the graphics are "worse" are just fucking retarded.
It's coming out next... March I think, so it better be farther along than "pre-pre alpha." And if it weren't representative of actual combat, why would they release it as a "combat walkthrough"?
Whatever I got bored after playing through the first one once it's just this one seems only slightly different and people are making a big deal out of it.
A wheel for conversations is still stupid. It's fine for a light RPG like Mass Effect but it has no purpose in a semi-hardcore RPG like Dragon Age.
I'm glad Dragon Age has picked up the Mass Effect dialog wheel. The thing that bothered me about Origins is that creating my character felt rather futile, knowing that he would just stare into space saying nothing the entire game.
It doesn't even need the dialogue wheel to have voice overs... Take a look at Deus Ex, dialogue box with multiple choices and it includes voice overs.

[editline]18th December 2010[/editline] The upside is that if the game has hilarious dialogue like in ME2, you won't see it coming and it will be all the more enjoyable.
graphics & animations look awful.
light RPG like Mass Effect semi-hardcore RPG like Dragon Age.
>:( sounds like some elitism up in here
>:( sounds like some elitism up in here
He's not saying DA is better. It is more of a standard "hard-core" RPG because there's a lot more RPG-elements. ME2 was an RPG only in its branching dialogue -- outside of that, it was basically a cover shooter. Which isn't a bad thing, of course.
The bad thing there is that you're creating the requirement that RPGs have to have huge lists of stats and other boring shit, and they don't. [editline]17th December 2010[/editline] Just like a bunch of people complaining about this game are doing.
The terrible thing is, the franchise has most likely been changed in this way to please all of the mentally ill people who played origins and didn't like it.

[editline]17th December 2010[/editline] Just like a bunch of people complaining about this game are doing.
Well, maybe games like RPGs don't, but RPGs at this point are sort of expected to. Maybe Mass-Effect-esque semi-RPGs need their own genre definition?
>:( sounds like some elitism up in here
No... it's pretty obvious that Mass Effect is extremely light on the RPG aspect. In ME2 everything RPG-related is pretty much gone. I'm not being elitist at all.
So DA2 won't be fully hack&slash? I am disappointed.
I predict myself doing battles in real-time but if the situation calls for it, lets say bosses, I'll switch to tactical. BioWare is getting my money on this anyway. Soon as they release system requirements that is. [editline]18th December 2010[/editline] Whoops here they are Recommended: CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4 GHz Processor or equivalent CPU: AMD Phenom II X3 Triple core 2.8 GHz or equivalent RAM: 2GB (4 GB Vista and Windows 7) Video: ATI 3850 512 MB or greater Video: NVIDIA 8800GTS 512 MB or greater DirectX 11: ATI 5850 or greater DirectX 11: NVIDIA 460 or greater Minimum: OS: Windows XP 32-bit with SP3 OS: Windows Vista 32-bit with SP2 OS: Windows 7 64-bit CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo (or equivalent) running at 1.8 GHz or greater CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 (or equivalent) running at 1.8 GHz or greater RAM: 1 GB (1.5 GB Vista and Windows 7) Video: Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB Video: NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS 256 MB cards Disc Drive: DVD ROM drive required Hard Drive: 7 GB Sound: Direct X 9.0c Compatible Sound Card Windows Experience Index: 4.5 Supports DX11 too.
didnt they like only just release the first game
I hope it has tessellation. [editline]18th December 2010[/editline] Nevermind. It looks like graphics are already worse than before. Not gonna happen I guess.
didnt they like only just release the first game
2009.
God damn it I already have the Christmas orders in place! :argh:
No... it's pretty obvious that Mass Effect is extremely light on the RPG aspect. In ME2 everything RPG-related is pretty much gone. I'm not being elitist at all.
Oh yeah that's right everything RPG related is gone, you mean like, playing a role, choosing an origin, choosing what your character looks like and how they act, developing your character the story, developing the stories characters around you, a long playthrough that involves a huge story that arcs over three games, seeing small side stories, seeing small side stories develop over a huge story that arcs over three games, developing your character and teammates concentrating on skills that aren't useless, but you know now that the long list of useless weapons you never use are gone I guess we just can't call it an RPG anymore, we can't let it into the RPG club. Maybe that's why the RPG genre is so difficult to advance and open up to a larger audience, because it's small fanbase that just loves stagnation and really really boring shit. Oblivion with the Morrowind fans, Fallout 3 with the tools at NMA, the same stuff with ME and DA. [editline]18th December 2010[/editline]
Well, maybe games like RPGs don't, but RPGs at this point are sort of expected to.
And you support this horrible status quo why?
It's not a horrible status quo. RPGs are expected to be fairly stat-heavy. Deal with it. Call Mass Effect something else, maybe an adventure game? Seems like appropriate terminology, and it doesn't devalue the game at all.
Looking at all the released media so far it seems bioware are trying to market three different games: hack n slash action RPG-lite Mass Effect except set in lord of the rings world traditional RPG in the vein of classics like baldurs gate the result is that the game looks shit,
The bad thing there is that you're creating the requirement that RPGs have to have huge lists of stats and other boring shit, and they don't.
Dragon Age was a great RPG, not because there were lot of stats, but because it had depth. Something that this game seems to lack.
Dragon Age was a great RPG, not because there were lot of stats, but because it had depth. The classes, teammate system, and skills all look nearly the same. [editline]18th December 2010[/editline]
It's not a horrible status quo.
No... it's pretty obvious that Mass Effect is extremely light on the RPG aspect. In ME2 everything RPG-related is pretty much gone. I'm not being elitist at all.
I agree with this, I played Dragon Age Origins first and heard about how awesome Mass Effect 2 was and I thought it was some sort of combination of a shooter and RPG. Which was pretty wrong, a few RPG elements were there, but I expected it to be even more like Dragon Age [editline]18th December 2010[/editline]
How is the stop and pause gameplay in that video any different from what it was in the first. It's what made this game really good.
Concerning the Tactical vs Real-time argument. I think, on lower difficulties, i wouldn't see myself using the tactical pausing much, if atall ever. However;- crank that up to insanity and you will need it. Think of it the same as ME2, For example on the lower difficulty, i play it very run n' gun, little squad power usage, i just treat it like an FPS. However, when im challenging myself and playing on insanity the game is completely different i have to use cover and squaddies otherwise im going to loose my face, fast.
oh shit not enough squares on that list there that means it's less of an RPG
I sincerely hope that combat video was on Very Easy or something otherwise I have no hope for this game. I can put up with the combat differences so long as it's not as easy as that video made it out to be. I'm really just pissed about these changes because they advertised DA:O as the spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate and then they turn around with the sequel and turn it into God of War with party members. It really makes no sense to me considering how well DA:O sold and was received.
