No, the motive of most mass shooters is to become notorious, which is why they shoot innocent people.
But they could just as easily shoot the most hated people in America and still become famous.

Though this article makes it seem like the Patriot Guard is a sub-group of the Hell's Angels which is very much not true.

When I lived in California years ago a chapter of Hells Angels "owned" a piece of city close to where we lived; they often came into a local pub where my parents hung out. Apparently they were really good guys until you fucked with them. They were also especially respectful to women and often times offered up their seats to my mum and her friends.
One time while my dad was at work (He's a firefighter so he works for 24 hour stretches) my mum decided to go out with a friend later in the evening. A little after they arrived and settled down at the bar some jackass started harassing both my mum and her friend. My mum being nice tried to ignore it but the guy was extremely persistent and becoming even more aggressive and creepy.
A few minutes later the Hells Angels rolled in like they usually did around that time of night and a friend of my mum's who was in the group saw that she was being harassed. He subtly asked if she wanted him gone and my mum nodded with nervousness. A few minutes later the group of bikers grabbed the guy and hauled him away, kicking and beating him as they went.
They beat him enough that he was found dumped in a park a few blocks away almost dead with multiple fractures and a brain injury. I say it was overkill, but fuck it definitely makes me want to respect everyone I encounter.
