So you get rid of all guns, and suddenly only criminals have them and can do whatever the fuck they want with them because they're already breaking the law and now have weapons to do it with?
See, it doesn't work as an analogy.
Except only hackers would have it and you stop them how really? arresting them? suing them? More of this very bullshit?
Kind of, yeah. Especially since they can unban themselves whenever they want. Sony threatened to ban their MAC addresses but people started bitching and Sony then backed down.
Could you stop with the trivialisation please? You start to sound a little hot headed.
And I'd like people who read this post to rate agree or disagree.
But that's ALL it is. He edited software, sure, this is an "illegal" action. But that's all it was. And yet, he's getting a lawsuit that literally, would destroy any chance of a normal life afterwards.
Stop building it up to be more than it is.

Because the PS3 cost how much to develop?
How many people?
How many games sales will be lost?
What you're arguing is this is trivial, but what he actually did could do far much more than what OtherOS already did.
Kind of, yeah. Especially since they can unban themselves whenever they want. Sony threatened to ban their MAC addresses but people started bitching and Sony then backed down.
And it's a full circle argument.
Lets put it this way, a way I should have put it from the start.
everyone in this terrible situation has been stupid the entire time
Because the PS3 cost how much to develop?
And GeoHot has undoubtedly caused enough damage to sony?
No, he really didn't.

He could've easily prevented being sued by keeping the exploit to himself. Instead he had to wave his dick around going 'ooh, look at me, i'm hacking a ps3, fuck the major corporations wooh'.

You are trying to make less out of it.
Killing something with a toxic is not just "using a syringe" and building a robot is not just "putting together metal and electronics"
He could've easily prevented being sued by keeping the exploit to himself. Instead he had to wave his dick around going 'ooh, look at me, i'm hacking a ps3, fuck the major corporations wooh'.
because he clearly wanted piracy to be the #1 reason behind his crack and is therefore a dangerous person, right?

That's what I was pointing out earlier. I'm for neither side, both were retarded but now we're being pushed into corners and I'm siding with Sony on this.
He could've easily prevented being sued by keeping the exploit to himself. Instead he had to wave his dick around going 'ooh, look at me, i'm hacking a ps3, fuck the major corporations wooh'.
Average Geohot for you right here. If he finds en exploit he will not stop posting and boasting. It's just how he rolls.
If he hadn't found this and someone else, like Matthuie or however it was spelt found it, there would be less users on CFW and Sony wouldn't be kicking up such a fuss. Geohot is popular amongst idiots, he has a sheep like following thanks to his iphone antics, they will buy anything he hacks.
You are trying to make less out of it.

you're totally right, none of those things are just those things.
then why is this so black and white for you? I apologize if I ever gave the impression of it being black and white to me, and as I said a few posts back, yeah, everyone in this situation is being stupid. But the 'damages' his hack has done to the PS3? To Sony?
I'm still not getting what limitless damages he implied upon them
because he clearly wanted piracy to be the #1 reason behind his crack and is therefore a dangerous person, right?
Again, experience with the PSP1000s and 2000s, yeah Piracy is on Sony's list of watching. They had to specifically design the PSP3000 to break when hacked.
Much more to it.
Care to explain?
Care to explain?
I'd run out of room.
Because I care to tell it from both sides.
Sony will never win this case.
However, they will most likely strength their EULA in the future, or perhaps forcing the user to accept the agreement upon turning on the console for the first time even if he or she decides not to sign up for the online services.

This.
Even though GeoHot was waving the hack around, Sony completely overreacted, and have now made themselves look like complete idiots. They should have taken the Microsoft route and encouraged the hack, seeing how it could be used creatively, rather than thinking about the small amount of profit they're going to lose.

This.
I mentioned it earlier, it got ignored, but yeah, Microsoft rather than being the evil company so many like to portray them as, is actually encouraging the user base to hack and mod and find new ways to do things.
Hacking and modding are not bad things.

I'd normally agree :v:
But the mess this has created is just, unforgivable.
They should have taken the Microsoft route and encouraged the hack, seeing how it could be used creatively, rather than thinking about the small amount of profit they're going to lose.
Why do people keep comparing those 2 groups? There's a reason MS encouraged Kinect hacks and that's because of what immediately came out of it (playing SF, FPS games, controlling robots, that blind people thing). What's the first thing that comes out of hacking the PS3? CFW, which makes piracy piss-easy to do. One causes damage to the industry and the other doesn't.
This.

And then banning the accounts of most people who use the hack just to pirate. Which Sony could probably do just as easily.
And then banning the accounts of most people who use the hack just to pirate. Which Sony could probably do just as easily.
However those people could just unban themselves. They would have to ban the MAC address which is basically bricking the console.
Pretty much yeah, Geohot has never done anything for me, Sony has, so from my point of view Sony are better. Obviously people have different opinions.
This is one of the most ignorant outlooks I have ever seen in my life. Please take your Ayn Rand style thinking to the bottom of the ocean.
I thank you in advance.
However those people could just unban themselves. They would have to ban the MAC address which is basically bricking the console.
If I remember, MS banned by MAC or something for a while, perhaps it was the serial of the console. It took the hackers quite some time to get around it, but with the PS3 they have already done that. Short of actually bricking the console, MAC banning may be the only real fix.

They already threatened too and basically got bitched at for it.

They ban more than just MAC or Serial. There are unique keystrings found inside of the unique "keyvault" of each console that are checked upon connecting to live, which are banned.
This is getting good

Sony are well within their rights to sue or at least punish people creating CFW
This thread is hilarious.
And makes me very glad I live in England where none of these things make any sense.
After reading this thread I realized a lot of what's going on in this situation now.
I hope Geo wins.
Sony fanboys, Sony fanboys everywhere.
Not illegal to modify things you rightfully own. Try investing some time into investigating that over kissing phantom Sony ass on facepunch. Nothing he did was illegal, what people might have done with the information released might have been illegal but then that's why you punish them.
Don't punish the gun manufacturer, punish the murderer.
