It is high but not insanely high.

Anything close to $4/gal is considered high. We've had prices like that, currently the national average is around $3.5/gal, which is somewhat high but not terribly high.

$3/gal is generally considered good/low right now.

Not exactly, most of the Aus population is located on the eastern side of the contenant, since most of the central/west is just desert. USA has a pretty even distrobution of population across the whole landmass though, and it is still bigger than aus.
