Assault weapons ban dropped from Senate gun control bill
but I don't think assault weapon bans and magazine caps are going to solve the issue.
What was my position on assault weapon bans and magazine caps again?
What was my position on assault weapon bans and magazine caps again?
Seems to me that based on your disposition against guns that you'd think an assault weapons ban and magazine cap is a step in the right direction.
P.S. the article in the OP is about an assault weapons ban
I think that these assault weapon bans are pointless because they don't even do anything.
Proper control would consist of firearm regulations being held to the same scrutiny as water, electricity, gas, transportation, fuel, food, drugs, radio stations, television channels, etc.
The US government seems perfectly capable of determining what water is safe for you to drink, and modifies it until it is safe. They ban foods and drugs that do not pass the standards set by the FDA. A local power monopoly regulated by the government also probably manages your electricity, and your gas. Roads are built and maintained on local, state, and federal levels, plus the federal government runs AMTRAK.
Is it really too big a problem to do the same thing with firearms? Especially when buying them seems to be a horrible crapshoot where prices wildly fluctuate based on panic buying?

But I only came in to be critical of peoples attack on gun-reform discourse.
Much like you, but on the other side of the fence.

We're actually the same schizophrenic person.

Yes! Yes! The government knows what's best for me. I should just bend over and be a good boy and do what I am told because big government knows best.
I should give up my rights, you know, cause, they are bad and evil and stuff and they might hurt me - the government said so and they just want to protect me so I will just listen to them! Yay!
In other words.

I like to think they argue so much because Protocol doesn't like NoDachi using a similar avatar and NoDachi is angry his avatar has fewer frames.

Because when US politicians sit down to talk about gun control, it's always about outright bans, doesn't matter if it's an AWB or Magazine ban and it's not done to protect anyone. Those people just have an outright hatred of guns in general, they know a ban won't reduce violence but they don't care since that's not their goal.
There's also a very long, sad history of gun bans and confiscation being a part of slavery and even genocide.

No, what he's saying is many Americans don't like being told what to do or how to live and we hate the use of force even more.

Americans have always been told what to do. If firearms are enough to give you a fucking ridiculous freedom-rebellion fantasy then maybe you're more sheeplike than you realise.
Small question, why is it Americans want assault weapons so bad? Whats wrong with just having handgun to shoot the government or whatever?
America isn't ready

Handguns suck for actual combat. Rifles are longer ranged, more powerful, and more accurate-pretty much they're vastly superior in all categories, except concealment and ease of carrying.
why is it Americans want assault weapons so bad?
More like, why is it that shooters pretty much everywhere want them?
Even here in the land of pizza, pasta, and terrible politicians, most firearm enthusiasts either have one or want one. Because they're pretty awesome, that's why.
Stop this. You are fooling yourself into ignorance.

Nonetheless what type of weapon he used is largely irrelevant. The Virginia tech shooter used pistols to kill 33 people and nobody gave the slightest peep about banning handguns.
The only reason people give the slightest shit is because they were sitting and waiting for an excuse to ban the weapons that are obviously and absolutely used in a spectacularly small percentage of firearm homicides.

I've always been more of a bolt action rifle man. I've been toying with the idea of buying a Lee-Enfield since they were always fun to shoot.

I was thinking about a WW2 bolt-action too, but I still love my AK. Once you go semiauto...

So why is it fine for the state to determine the water you drink, the food you buy and eat, the roads you travel on, the voltage output of your electrical socket, and the medicines you take?
Not to mention that somebody else set standards for time, and the fact you need to pass tests to qualify to teach somebody, drive a car or operate a forklift.
Whats the big deal with bringing something like firearms into a petty system like that?

Sorry but this is ironic, given that America treated the natives worse and worse the further you got into the 19th century (to the point of genocide) and that it maintained slavery as a institution for endless decades.
The use of firearms and militias, ironically, were used heavily to repress slave rebellions.

Suprised that the bill dropped?
It does not really matter. The "damage" have already been done, obama have turned into a joke and the next president is going to be a republican. All is going according to plan and everybody is happy.
We can look forward to a bright future and nothing bad is ever going to happen again

Ever heard of Wounded Knee? The U.S. 7th Cavalry went to a place called Wounded Knee Creek, there they entered the Lakota camp and attempted to disarm them when a deaf man refused to give up his rifle and in the scuffle a shot was fired, the 7th responded by firing on the Lakota with rifles and artillery, killing more than 300 people. You don't bring artillery along unless you intend to use it, they fully intended to fire on the Lakota if they did not surrender every single gun. What's worse is 20 of those Cavalrymen were awarded the Medal of Honor.
How about Dred Scott? He was a slave, the court refused to recognize him as a human being because doing so would establish that as a human being he can not be a slave and it would also recognize his constitutional rights, including the right to bear arms.
And you're right, we have always been told what to do, but that doesn't mean we've always listened.

Yes, this is a large part of what I was referring to.
facepunch: where no step in any direction is the better than one that upsets a few.

People listened and didn't even care when they banned machineguns in the 30s.
People listened and didn't even care when they banned machineguns in the 30s.
That's because most people can understand that it might be a little crazy to give everyone military grade hardware
People listened and didn't even care when they banned machineguns in the 30s.
Machine guns weren't banned, they were taxed. It wasn't until 1986 that guns made after that date were banned, and there is a growing sentiment against this. On top of that, many people consider machine guns to be a waste of money and ammo, an opinion that many still hold but that is changing as well.
This is awesome, too bad they passed more or less the same thing is Colorado.
