North Carolina attempting to ban Tesla car sales because they're "unfair" to competition

All you damn liberals don't know what we really need is FREE MARKET!!
....except when it's unfair :'(
Robert Glaser, president of the dealers association, told the News & Observer that the law prohibiting Tesla sales isn’t just about his industry’s self-interest. Pointing to the Tesla representatives at a recent hearing, he said, “You tell me they’re gonna support the little leagues and the YMCA?”
Did he really just fucking pull "think of the children"
Did he really just fucking pull "think of the children"
I'm just waiting for a PR statement from Tesla talking about how they support "the little leagues and the YMCA" just to spite this asshole.

Yeah that's pretty much the furthest extent of public discourse in this area. Happens all the time.
To everyone else in the United States, on behalf of all North Carolinians, I say: My sincerest apologies; Our bad.
I'm personally trying my best to get people around me to engage in critical thinking and everywhere I go I promote literacy and understanding, but those kinds of ideas aren't very welcome around here. There's a reason why the area around Appalachia and the Piedmont regions were hit exceptionally hard by the economic crisis, it mostly has to do with the people's unwillingness to change or adapt to new circumstances.
Keep in mind we're talking about an area where it's actually relatively common to see "the south will rise again" bumper stickers as if it's still the 1800's and the wounds are still fresh.

He actually said he would be happy to support the YMCA and Little Leagues.
If that’s the real issue, then I may have some good news for all concerned: I asked O’Connell, and he assured me Tesla would be happy to support the little leagues and the YMCA if that’s what North Carolina requires in order to do business there. Problem solved! Right, Mr. Glaser?
There's actually a quip about that at the end of the article.
Whoops. Not quite fast enough.
Texas Autodealers Association tried to do this too. It didn't work. Then one of the biggest dealer personalities in Texas came out in support for Tesla and it was pretty much over.
It's the curse of the Tesla name to get fucked over by the government, I swear.
The congressional hearing in Texas was basically People of Texas vs. 2 association asshats. One of the congressmen on the board even said "I already have the wheels I want picked out." It was all pretty funny.

Well Nikola was fucked over by Edison and Chase. Chase is now an investor in Tesla Motors, and all of Edisons still existing power stations run Alternating Current so we know who got the last laugh. I wish I could go back in time when Tesla was penniless and insane and show him the new Tesla museum and a Tesla car, and tell him the future will appreciate his brilliance.
Are you implying that because of the law it's unfair? Why does a law like that even exist, all it does is stop innovation and prevent competition, which in my opinion is far more 'unfair' if such a thing even exists in the legal world. And besides, what's stopping the people who want one from just going one state over and buying one?
I'm not implying anything. I'm just telling you that auto sales are regulated through the state. I dont care one way or another how they do it as long as it gets done
Electrical Cars are unammurikan!!
Gotta love lobbyism
Electrical Cars are unammurikan!!
to be honest I want to see how classic Detroit "Motor City Muscle" types are reacting to Tesla, actual gearheads who like their hefty mechanical engineering instead of just dealerships trying to prevent a sales uprising

They don't like electric cars because they don't make loud noise.

we're as retarded as we seem.
Speak for yourself.

Big oil companies are controlling the government!!! They're preventing hard working AMURICAN CITIZENS from getting clean energy!!!

Which is funny because Teslas are built and assembled entirely in the United States (except the batteries which are supplied by Panasonic). Rolls of bulk material go in, Tesla cars come out. Even Chrysler's are built in Canada and Mexico, and then assembled in the US. Most American cars are built in another country. Tesla is pretty much the only one that's actually American built and assembled.

All this under one roof. In a factory that's so large it's still mostly empty. They have plenty of room to build more models entirely in-house.

Ford built its CV's in Canada, but Rangers in the US. Because theres great logic there.
Stealership's being jelly of Tesla selling directly to consumers.
Yup, blatant protectionism for campaign-contributing dealership owners. Republicans are all for free market competition, until it inconveniences their supporters.
I saw your username in the latest post thing and was hoping for a zingy appearance

How does it stop innovation?
And it was in place to keep from manufacturers from opening their own lots and undercutting all the dealers.
Hey guys! Free markets are the best!
Hey guys! Let's ban our competitors!
How does it stop innovation?

So if a consumer knows exactly what said they want it's illegal for them to skip all the hoops & mazes and instead go directly to the manufacturer in order to save money and time?
There's a reason they're nicknamed stealerships
Would it be possible for Tesla to get around this law by just setting up a proxy company whom they send the vehicles to, which then sells the cars? It's inefficient, but it might be better than not selling cars at all.
Lol corruption.
Ban competitors instead of competing with them.
We should ban the TV because its "UNFAIR" To radio, and ban the internet because its "UNFAIR" to TV.

Showrooms which Tesla "somehow" owns?
Showrooms which Tesla "somehow" owns?
Tesla wouldn't "own" it, but it would be owned by a company connected to them (such as having the same board members, CEO, etc). Basically the same people, but legally a different company. Then they would be both the manufacturers and the middle-man, in theory bypassing the law and not needing to deal with third party dealerships.
[editline]15th May 2013[/editline]
So basically they would like, sell the cars from one company to another (with no loss because they run both companies and could just quietly "loan" the same amount of money back), then sell the cars to the customer.

I don't get what's bad with undercutting a competitor.

Okay wait wait wait now
You of all people are now arguing for regulating the market?
