Scientists say they’re getting closer to Matrix-style instant learning

You wouldnt download kung-fu.

Fuck that, I'm pirating all my knowledge if it means getting to skip mental anti-piracy adverts. I don't want to wait through 3 unskippable trailers for other skills everytime I want to play the piano.
I have a feeling the world will be split into two if this becomes a reality, for example, you'll have all the people who learned how to play guitar from the ground up absolutely hating the people who used the benefit.

It probably won't amount to much though. They will get a bit frustrated and say that they are better because they learnt it properly but other than that it won't be a civil war or anything.
Would you guys take it? I think it would make me feel like I cheated a bit, I wouldn't find any pride in my knowledge knowing I just recieved it instantly with no effort.
Imagine douchebags that take this and then act all arrogant.

I would. My main problem with learning new skills is that I don't like being shit at something so I just quit. If I could be made not shit to start with it gives me a leg up past the awkward stage and into the area where I could continue to learn by myself.

Although I think a lot of people will feel pressured into taking it so they don't get left behind.
I think this may be one of the largest scientific breakthroughs ever! Imagine the possibilities!

Don't neglect to think of the misuses though.

Of course, but every technology has the possibility of being abused.
The dangers of abusing nuclear energy are sever, yet it doesn't stop us from using it to create clean and save energy
It only needs regulations, like everything
Sounds like it has a lot of potential for both good and bad use
Personally I'd like to see one of these being created with this technology
Imagine if you gave everyone the knowledge of a doctor.
Are you implying he isn't already insane?
By insane I mean mentally-crippled, incapable of doing nearly anything at all, confined to the ward where the "incurables" go.
I think this would destroy individuality to a large extent. Think a about, your actions are largy based on what you know. If this technology reached "matrix-level" was widely used knowledge would no longer be defined by interest, instead everyone would no everything.
I'm not saying this is a bad thing, but imagine a two people were to upload the entire wikipedia to their brains? What would they talk about? It would truly be the end of humanity as we know, and a huge step toward some kind of hivemind.

An asshole that knows all about math will still be an asshole, and á nice guy who knows everything about agricultural history will still be a nice guy
Then suddenly religion organizations get their hands on the technology and fill it with bible shit to brainwash people
[editline]13th December 2011[/editline]
If they manage this, everyone will be smart, then our technology will most likely jump 50 years

Knowledge doesn't make you smart, knowledge makes you knowledgeable.
Cookies need love like everything does
I misread the title as Marxist-style instant learning.
Does this mean that terribly incompetent people like me could actually be good at something?
Sign me up.
I've been playing piano for the last 9 years. I've spent a lot of time and energy to get as good as I am and now they're saying they're going to be able to make that sort of thing happen in an instant. It's a little unfair.
"Work smarter, not harder"
Besides this technology will make more inventors, better services, higher quality of life, luxorious for cheap, futuristic technology, etc.
This also has the potential of raping the job market for teachers. Why pay a fleshy thing for every week she's working when you can make a larger up front investment, but no wages, and eliminate the "My little biwwy's teacher is X and he can't learn Y because Z is too distracting" instances.
Considering some teachers are blatant Luddites as it is...
This will be INTERESTING.
OT: Fuck yes. Please don't go away like (nearly) every other amazing achievement this year...
I'd think that some things that are body-dependent, like knowing how to "hit a curve ball" like the article says, or other such fine motor skills, would be harder to transfer. Those kind of things require an intimate knowledge of how your body works and how it's fine-tuned, and if you were to copy one person's "data" it wouldn't match that of your body. Imagine the athlete you're copying is taller and leaner than you; his (or her) stride would be greatly different from yours, their muscle strength, arm length, etc. etc. would all be different from yours and so would your motor control. I guess you could think of it like how some guns are fitted to a certain person (usually the owner) so when someone with different dimensions uses the gun, it feels slightly awkward.
This could actually be a problem. Companies could pay a LOT to have ADVERTISING put in this. I shouldn't even need to worry about this happening, and yet with the way that major companies seem to be so horribly desperate to gain as much money as possible, I can actually see it happening.
Reminds me of that episode of Futurama where companies in the future are able to insert advertisements into your dreams.

That episode rocked
How can this be great? Countries with this kind of advantage will just humiliate those, who dont have it. It will look like Metal Gear Solid, just with less nanotech yet machines would do a lot of training for you.
By "great for" I am not saying it is "great" as in positive, I'm saying it's good at it
like a gun is "great for killing things" but I'm not saying it's good
Fuck college, I'll just buy myself some science.

It won't change your ability to imagine abstract shapes. Whether you can or not cannot be changed with any amount of learning. You will still be better at say, mechanics, than you would be at theoretical mathematics.
This is amazing, but probably still so far away...
I can see tons of benefits, but I can just as easily see horrible outcomes.
This reminds me of the Deus Ex universe. There are those who can afford augmentations, those who can't. Swap augmentations with instant knowledge.
I kind of don't want this to happen
it'd take away your self worth in what you do for a job, and anyone could just take your place that had the same schooling software.
The only valuable skills would be strength, and artistic innovation/creativity.
I don't see why this worries anybody, it actually doesn't make you more intelligent, at most it makes you more knowledgeable and those aren't the same thing
If you are a complete moron and "download" tons of facts, congrats, you're now a moron who knows tons of facts (and there's not even a guarantee that you'll understand said facts)
