While I'm not saying that Valve's charging 30% (it's probably less), Apple's doing it and seemingly app developers go along with it. Apple appstore is a pretty fucking big business, so I'd say they're at least somewhat comparable.
The difference is that Apple's app store has a monopoly on all content distribution on their products, meaning developers have no other choice.
Okay, you've got me there, but he fucking doubled the price of the game and claimed "RELEASED". Even though the game was still a mess of broken and half implemented ideas.
I am still waiting for an official CTF mode.
I'm almost certain he means 30% of all PC games sold DD and retail, are through Steam.
That could be compared to how if you buy an XBOX game it can only be played on an XBOX.

Which makes his statement even dumber.
Notch is in reality a secret EA employee, just look at Minecraft. Discounts? Special sales? Bloody hell, he could be even the goddamn Riccitello with a fat man suit, it would explain why he takes so many vacations.
One day he'll take off the mask and release Minecraft on Origin and transfer every Minecraft premium account onto it.
I don't like how he uses the word "self-publish". Steam isn't really a publishing service, is a distribution service.

I don't get it :\

This guy got it right, though I disagree with what he makes of it:
You'll probably earn more when you have your game on steam with the 30% cut anyway, so why cry about it.
I've posted the same in this thread, just with the point that it's a problem.
lol anyone who takes notch seriously should take a good hard look at minecraft's development, the reason it's mostly reviled now is because he abandoned it when it was half-done, leaving a myriad of features he never integrated/half-integrated.
Pretty sure Valve takes only around 10%-12% of your sales. Not 30%
The only reason he's been able to get by without a publisher of some sort is because Minecraft is a small game. It isn't a 6gig download. You would need some serious servers and bandwidth to allow the millions of people who download minecraft (more than once mind you) if it was a large game.
Steam/Valve does what any other publisher does, really, only it gives the game devs a lot more control.
Why Notch would say Okay, let's get Minecraft on Xbox, when Microsoft will charge money to 'certify' the game, and then re-certify if something is amiss, charging thousands each time to do it, and then charge money to patch your own game, BUT then worry about Steam is be-fucking-yond me

He got the chance of basically putting minecraft on xbl for free, including free updates iirc.

So it's ok to be a hypocrite if you get special treatment according to Notch. Most devs have to pay for patches that's worse than Valve by miles.
I don't get it :\
You know, if you buy an XBOX game you're bound to the XBOX platform? If you buy a Steam game you're bound to the Steam platform. Same principle.

OSX, windows, and in the far future linux, and for (one?) a small amount of games, the ps3.

And you can still buy from multiple Digital Distributors if you want. Xbox it's Microsoft or nothing.

Yeah but PC is the only open platform where you don't HAVE to use any specific service, it's a pretty important thing to make sure it stays that way.

Competitors can't keep up with Steam and it's only going to grow from here.
Notch likes money, Valve likes money.
They are the same.

With Microsoft there are no competitors. PC always have alternatives if I don't want to use Steam. If it got bad enough there are even the subjectively ethical options.

I wasn't talking about OS, though, I was talking about platform. :v:
all notch really is is a dude with a decent idea at the right place at the right time
he's kind of a dick and his own development on his own game has been schizophrenic since 1.7 and he has the ego approximately the size of his home country
I thought we all loved Notch. It was surprising to come in here and see everyone telling him to kiss ass, and calling him an assshole.
I wasn't talking about OS, though, I was talking about platform. :v:

A computing platform includes a hardware architecture and a software framework (including application frameworks), where the combination allows software, particularly application software, to run. Steam is not a platform.
Of course you have to pay them a rather big percentage. Steam is absolutely brilliant for marketing, millions of gamers gathered together in a single community. There's no other place you can advertise your game better.
Steam is not a platform.
Valve has on several occasions called Steam a "distribution platform", I think that's what he meant.
Notch's on a million dollars every 3 fucking days.
That's more per day than most people make in 10 years of hard work.
And he's complaining about other people making money?
Ha Ha Ha

Pretty much, yeah.

I'm not saying he needs spend his money, but you'd think such a wealthy game developer that cares about the industry/PC so much would take action. Maybe do the Valve approach and make an indie teams dream come true.
Pretty much, yeah.
You said XBOX platform. Xbox as a platform is comparable to an OS, not to Steam so either way, what you said is wrong.
steam is like the wal-mart of gaming. their ubiquity gives them a great deal of leverage over their content providers. if somebody doesn't want to pay whatever valve sees fit to charge, valve will deny them access to their giant customer base, many of which refuse to use any digital distribution service that isn't steam.
valve is screwing the developer and passing the savings on to us, just like wal-mart. and, just like wal-mart, content creators will have to play by their rules or miss out on nearly half their customer base
What would be really neat is more companies/distributors like steam but that are all compatible.
For example I buy a game on Origin, but I can download/play it through Steam, Origin or another client.
