• Notch on Steam "I worry about the PC as a gaming platform becoming owned by a single entity that tak

I think steam made PC gamers buy more games and pirate less in general.
Notch's on a million dollars every 3 fucking days. That's more per day than most people make in 10 years of hard work. And he's complaining about other people making money? Ha Ha Ha
I don't see him complaining about people earning money, rather that he fears one company having a monopoly.
Why is everyone having a shit fit about this, it's basically fact. The idea of one company running everything sounds convenient, except it's incredibly shady. Gabe has run the company fairly decently, minus fixing the incredibly flawed play offline feature - but steam will probably be around longer than Gabe and who knows what will happen
But is it biased if its true? I read most of this thread and they aren't making any shit up AFAIK.
Yet, there is that certain "afterburner" if someone dares to insult holy mighty Valve or anything associated. Not talking about this case specifically though.
Does Notch actually do anything anymore? Other than being an ideas guy, of course.
he's probably just jealous
Notch's statement truly is ridiculous, he's making it seem as if every game company will suddenly be sucked under Steam. Fuck you, dude - I paid a tenner for your shitty lego game and now you've made millions. Also, don't forget that Steam's distribution charge will also apply to the fact that they are providing developers access to about 40 million users with their advertising and deals
Does Notch actually do anything anymore? Other than being an ideas guy, of course.
Hes making that shitty game that requires a monthly fee for some reason.
I'd probably play Minecraft more if it was well-integrated with Steam, and I'm sure a lot of other people would too. Notch should really release the game on Steam along with workshop support for mods and etc., there is money to be made. And I'd be fine with Valve taking 30% of all revenue made from PC games sales. I may be a Valve fanboy, but that's because I've yet to see Valve make any big mistakes (except maybe taking the episodic route for Half-life) and they're always trying to innovate.
Also, don't forget that Steam's distribution charge will also apply to the fact that they are providing developers access to about 40 million users with their advertising and deals
or, if developers don't want to play ball, they can deny then access to about 40 million users developers will take what valve sees fit to give them, and whether they like it or not is no consequence. it's literally the same situation that wal-mart has been putting manufacturers in for decades

That was pretty bad back then in 2003.
Hes making that shitty game that requires a monthly fee for some reason.
Notch himself said all F2P games are a scam. (which is fucking stupid) (Even though he could make it like minecraft where you buy it once and you own the game.) (I wonder if he has played TF2 before.) I am guessing he convienently fails to see that F2P can be done right so he can have an excuse to charge extra money for his game. Why make less money and look smart when you can look like an idiot and be smart.
How about instead of complaining of a steam dominated market someone actually makes a service that can compete with steam?
I think its easier to rule the world instead.

-snip- automerge broken
A lot of indie developers who don't use Steam use places like Indievania instead, which also have a good audience. Steam is not the apocalypse of PC gaming, it's just a very easy, convenient, community based platform that has cheap games and good service. If you are saying about 'Steam denying them', you obviously have not read up on Steam Greenlight or the fact that every case I've heard of a developer pulling out of Steam has normally been because they don't like the whole deal system, for example EA who strictly wanted full price games (until they started copying Steam sales again recently) Edit In short, any developer who doesn't like Steam's policies, or simply don't want to be on Steam, have a lot of alternatives for distribution, as well as self-publishing. Steam just simplifies that entire process for them, as well as creating an easy way to release updates and fixes to the whole community.
What the hell happened to 0x10c and Scrolls? What is notch even doing? He's basically become as meaningful in opinion as John Romero.
Whats really the big deal about having it on steam? Steam achievements? Seriously? Just that? Overlay? Already possible Steam updates? Pretty much the same already, on launch, no point. Oh but you want to /buy it on steam and have it on your account you say/. Just deal with it. This is as good as it will ever get with Notch. However I do agree that Notch'es comments hinting at Steam being a greedy fat cat are stupid.
How are people still this ignorant? Do you have any idea how helpful Steamworks is? Does your game have an inventory with tradeables? BAM You can now cross game trade your shit Does your game have save files (I'd hope so) BAM Steam cloud You want a cross game event or promotion (for example the potato bundle) just talk to Valve Do all you Steam criticizers even play Steam games? It really feels like you guys don't
(I wonder if he has played TF2 before.)
Since he has an item dedicated to him and only for him to use, I'd assume he at least has an account. EDIT: The hat for him and him alone came out of him complaining that no one on TF2 believed he was actually who he said he was, so he's played it at least once.
Does your game have an inventory with tradeables? BAM You can now cross game trade your shit
Just trade the 100 diamond pickaxes you edited into your save for a hat. Cross game trade wouldnt work with minecraft.
Hes making that shitty game that requires a monthly fee for some reason.
Judging by his twitter he hardly works on that either.
Just trade the 100 diamond pickaxes you edited into your save for a hat. Cross game trade wouldnt work with minecraft.
I don't care for Minecraft, I was just defending Steam/Steamworks
Notch has gotten pretty arrogant. I'm glad that Jeb has basically taken over the future of Minecraft, because he's been able to throw out some really neat updates (even though they are just beta/snapshots right now) and he has way better time management than Notch. I don't get why Notch feels the need to say something like this when he is clearly wrong.
I don't care for Minecraft, I was just defending Steam/Steamworks
I was just pointing out that that example in particular wasn't really valid in this case...
I don't mind the fact that notch spends his money on vacation, kicks back, and doesn't do a great deal anymore. What annoys me is that he acts as if he's staying relevant and active as a game developer when it seems like he hasn't touched a PC in months. Literally all he seems to do is tweet all day, which he could be doing from a handheld device lying on a hammock in the Bahamas.

He says he codes fast but it's like he stops halfway during a script to drop it all and go on a fucking vacation.
I really don't believe that Valve is taking 30% of all the sales. I'm guessing it's more like 5-10%.
I don't think its 30% for all games. AFAIK steam actually doesnt reveal the numbers publicly.
