I don't think its 30% for all games. AFAIK steam actually doesnt reveal the numbers publicly.
I think 30 sounds about right considering all of the services Valve does for the developer. Hosting their games for download on their servers, trading systems, steam cloud, huge userbase to buy the games, etc.
I don't understand how this is getting tons of dumbs, it says right in the article he loves steam and everything right now he is just worried for the future, like someone else said what happens when Gabe is not the head anymore and it's taken over by other people? It's most likely not going to remain amazing forever. Gabe isn't immortal or anything, it's most likely not going to remain like this so get your heads out of your asses and actually think for once.
I don't think its 30% for all games. AFAIK steam actually doesnt reveal the numbers publicly.
I would assume Notch asked people before who have games on steam what the number is before he threw out that number
what happens when Gabe is not the head anymore and it's taken over by other people?
Valve has always stated that they don't necessarily have a 'head' of their company - Gabe is essentially just another worker, but the most influential/well known one, in very basic terms
Where did notch say he hated F2P games out of curiosity? I know he already explained his love for TF2.
I love how notch keeps hating on valve when they gave him a hat on tf2.
Jeb is cooler anyway.
Meanwhile at Valve HQ:
Meanwhile at Mojang...
Where did notch say he hated F2P games out of curiosity? I know he already explained his love for TF2.
He never said he hated F2P games. He just beleives that all F2P games are a scam and pay to win. https://twitter.com/notch/status/187298042087604224
I love how notch keeps hating on valve when they gave him a hat on tf2.
he's got a logical point, and he put it nicely enough. I don't think he's beefing with valve, it's just that the idea of a monopoly on digital distribution by a private company is something to worry about, especially when you consider that competing services are more or less considered a joke amongst gaming communities. just like wal-mart has hurt american manufacturing, an omnipresent steam could hurt development in the long run
I really don't believe that Valve is taking 30% of all the sales. I'm guessing it's more like 5-10%.
Its around 10-12%, thats what my cousin said when Valve talked to his class at college.
Notch got incredibly lucky with his game, gained a massive whiteknighting, word-of-mouthing fanbase and is raking in cash for a half finished game at $30 a pop, he's got no right to talk about steam being bad In fact with Greenlight many indie devs who couldn't cover the cost or have the time to do finances and keep download servers up might see an easy and effective way to sell their games.
I think that, in essence, Notch has confused Steam with the concept of a pc monopoly
Notch fuck off, as well as his blind 12 year old followers.
I'm a little late to the party but I thought you were going to say "as well as his blind 12 year old son" That wouldn't have been very nice, though I agree, fuck off Notch!!

And without removing my valve fanboy cap; Gabe Newell is hyped to the extreme.
notch has fat intoxication of the thinky-bits, he dumb Steam is goddamn great because patches can be sent out easily through one service, and I can chat and whatnot and it's not EA and its garbage steam-alike
Jeb is just 'o.k.' and was hired on way back when because Notch thought he was cool The great updates you're seeing now are due to the Bukkit team being hired on
Oh, I didn't know that. Thanks for the tid-bit. :)
I wish that another member of Mojang was the public face that we see instead of him. They all seem pretty sensible except him and that minecraft girl.
Steam's an excellent, EXCELLENT platform for the consumer. And I've rarely heard complaints about steam from developers, other than Notch.
Then you just aren't listening to anyone with an objective thought in their head. The one thing I like about Notch (boxes plzx) is that he's not a greedy fuck like everyone I seem to see after they get a little bit of success and it clearly goes straight to their head. Valve has been a great company in the past, but now that Steam is getting bigger I clearly see them getting bigger and bigger egos about all the 'cool unconventional business methods' and yet they do LESS and LESS for their actual customers. They're becoming a marketing heavy company just like Apple, and I'm kind of getting tired of them doing nothing about that fact and every stupid fucking gamer kissing their asses regardless because they're ignorant and don't actually follow the companys actions at all. I guess they see these summer sales and shit and go "OH VALVE IS SO AWESOME TO DO STUFF LIKE THIS, THEY REALLY CARE ABOUT ME"... They care about MONEY. They're a cold secretive business like pretty much any other company, they make more money off these sales than normal business, that's why they do it. And then they introduce shit like badges, which are obviously just to get people to buy more games. 'cool unethical and immoral business practices bro'
Unless steam made it impossible for other download services to work then I wont be worried. Steam is popular not because its the only choice (gamers gate, GOG, origin, direct to drive, retail, directly from site ect) but because most people actually want to use it. [editline]26th July 2012[/editline]
Wow 30%? For a game they didnt even develop.
Thats not that much. From what I hear gamestop and most places take more and steam actually varies and lowers the percentage during sales.

Also notch ISNT a lazy fuck he just doesn't do anything." A+ post would read again and again.
I never said he wasn't a lazy fuck, in fact I love him more because he is a lazy fuck. Upper management are allowed to be lazy fucks, he has earned that right! But really, I don't get why everyone hates Notch here, he is awesome to be honest, he's such a positive person. Hes honest to a fault and really if the world were more full of people like that it would be an awesome thing.
It just sounds like he's not fond of the centralization of an online PC game shop.

30% isn't bad considering that retail stores take around 40-50%. Plus the cost to manufacture on top of that
Ironic how he says this just after Gabe criticizes Microsoft for their new app platform. Notch is obviously jelly of Gabe, and trying to call him a hypocrite.
the hell is this notch vs. gabe soap opera bullshit it's just a developer coming out against private, centralized distribution. and he wasn't even a dick about it!
the hell is this notch vs. gabe soap opera bullshit it's just a developer coming out against private, centralized distribution. and he wasn't even a dick about it!
We here at Facepunch forums have a damn near devout following for steam. Any words spoken against it is blasphemy.
I would assume Notch asked people before who have games on steam what the number is before he threw out that number
They can't disclose that number though, so he's obviously just pulling it out of his ass.
