• New Fire Emblem to lock story paths and sell them as DLC

If both story sides are largely similar, with dialogue being largely the same with different talking heads, and maps being palette swaps; there should be no reason why both story lines couldn't be on the same cart. If picking a side makes a huge amount of difference, you're only getting half a game for the price of a complete one, being locked out of the other half by a paywall. Either way, not everyone finds it OK to be fucked over like that, and not everyone has grown complacent in the face of split releases, needless content exclusivity and day one DLC. Sure, Pokemon did it in the past, but the game pairs are 98% similar, with the only difference being a few exclusive mons (which you can get by trading anyway); they don't lock you out of half of the content.
so, FE x SMT is generic weeb rpg that looks nothing like either of the things it is crossing over and the new FE is intentionally being sold unfinished hahaha fuck you nintendo
People keep saying this but the two versions of Pokemon are only superficially different, the story is still the same the characters are the same just certain bits and the legendary are changed and maybe some coloring, but its not like an entire different game.
You're not the only person saying this but I don't get what the point is. Why is the story being largely the same a good thing there? With Pokémon if you want the 'full experience' you spend -a full game price to get -a slightly different game with some exclusive content. With this proposal you spend -much less than full price to get -a totally different story with unique content. Why is that a bad thing? If each storyline is a full game then I don't see the problem. It's no different from if they only released one storyline to start with, then added a second later through DLC.
this will stay in japan, why do you people care so much
i dont see why one shouldnt care about the same company acting shitty to another part of their userbase that i just happen to not be a part of. if they see that they still make money in japan regardless of whatever criticism comes back at them, they could try and just bring the same tactic over here too
I'll be surprised if any of you actually own a 3DS.
i dont but i sure as hell want to at some point
As long as each path has the content, I honestly don't mind this. I've got hundreds of hours logged in Awakening, and that only cost me $60.

It really depends on how much content each story will contain. I see no point in crying about it until we know what we're getting.
What really annoys me is that the digital version contains both versions (which makes me think the retail versions also contain both) it's just 2/3rd of the content is locked behind a paywall. If was just simply so much content that the 3ds cartridge couldn't handle it, I'd get that, but this doesn't look to be the case. It's also hella confusing to everyone buying retail, to those following the game's progress, you basically have to choose a side before you even create your character and get to hear both sides' story. For those who know nothing about the game and just want to get a new 3ds rpg, that's gonna be even more of a mess to explain. NOA I really hope you streamline this.
Oh shit I didn't realize he was Australian. Nevermind, my bad.
Even so, had I known how much enjoyment I'd get from Awakening before it came out, I would have been happy to pay way more.

after how fucking amazing the first 3ds one was, i'm really bummed that i wont be buying this one
Japan and the West are entirely difference audiences, while the Japanese market eats this sort of stuff up, you can already see the outrage it causes in the Western markets. It might seem optimistic, but I do think it'll be released as one game here, with or without the third route. Especially as the US and EU Nintendo directs seemed to market it as a singular game, while the JP one focused on their separation.

For Pokémon, they change a few minor details, and think it's justified as a separate, standalone release. What I don't like, though, is how they give you the content in the digital version. It's there, on the SD card. The data is there, but they lock it out. That I think is pretty despicable. But that's it. The two game split is something we'll have to wait and see.
I think the biggest thing about this is that we don't know one very important tidbit yet: if each of the paths are as long as previous full retail Fire Emblem games were, it could very well be justified.
