Flappy bird is hard and gay. Fuck it.
All it is is an ego competition. "Oh my god you're terrible since you got 20, I got 50, get better", etc etc
I'd say that thinking you are better than people that play an app is worse for your ego.
It made roughly $50,000 a day in ad revenue. He's only removing the game because he just likes to make games as a hobby. His words:
I honestly just don't understand that. Each to their own though, I guess.
Well. Better now than the lawsuits hit him later. This game was suspiciously close to a flash game released a while back.
(but I have played helicopter)
Thanks for giving me that mental image
Thanks for giving me that mental image
I meant the old game that was like Flappy Birds, but with a helicopter.
But sports aren't?
Everyone shakes hands at the end of the game. Same can be said with esports (ie CS:GO), a virtual handshake known as the "GG" happens too (and maybe real handshakes in addition if it's a LAN). If someone doesn't shake hands, then there's controversy (see: Fnatic's CS:GO team refusing to shake hands with GeT_RiGhT, one of the CS:GO scene's more known players). As for this app that was released on the worst platform possible, people will just go out of their way to wave their e-peen in front of all their friends due to this game. The developer knew that the mobile game playing community is very, very toxic, and decided he didn't want to have any of it.
Christ, I feel bad for that guy
Why are you defending who stole someone else's game, and then stole sprites from Nintendo? The game helicopter has been around for years and this guy's making a quick buck off of someone else's work
Flappy bird is hard and gay. Fuck it.
I hope you realize just exactly what you said and how you said it.
i can sympathise with him. he made the game like 6 months ago or something, never marketed it or anything. i get the impression that he made it in like a day as an experiment and now he doesn't want his name associated with it for the rest of his life "oh you're that guy that made the helicopter game but with a mario environment and a bird?" that'd be shitty
I just realized his name is fucking Dong.
Why are you defending who stole someone else's game, and then stole sprites from Nintendo? Also did you ever have gym class in your entire life? It basically is everyone trying way too hard to look good. I know no one who brags about a phone game, but I know tons of people who brag at sports. If sports weren't a way of building your ego the terms "jock" and "nerd" would never exist.
I can see why he would do that. Suddenly there's $50,000 coming to his account daily, it all turns into a clusterfuck. The bank ask where is all that money coming from and the taxman is after it too. It all could go wrong very easily and he just wants to chill. On the plus side he still has a shitload of cash.
Why are you defending who stole someone else's game, and then stole sprites from Nintendo? The game helicopter has been around for years and this guy's making a quick buck off of someone else's work
why are people saying this? yeh some sprites look a lot like mario. whether this was deliberate or not it isn't "stealing" it's just imitation regardless, painting him as some super calculated evil genius out to steal people's hard-earned cash is dumb - he made the game like 6 months ago or something and never even marketed it. it was obviously made as some simple experiment and somehow, mostly down to luck, it blew up. get over it
Aww damn. Even though it's a Helicopter clone and might use SMB sprites, it's still a pretty fun little game. It's sad that it was so short lived, though. But, I kinda see where's he's coming from. Godspeed Dong, godspeed.
Thanks for reminding me to look into this. For a while i've thought about it and wondered how that trend even started and who got those terms from where? What idiot thought it would be a good idea to name socially awkward intellectuals (not sure if that's an accurate descriptor really) after a Willy Wonka candy? Or am I missing something?
I have no clue on the origin of the terms, but for a long time they've been used for this context.
So repeatedly tapping your screen is considered "fun"? Please. There's plenty of better ways to burn energy and have fun at the same time (AKA playing sports). The game doesn't even rip sprites from any Mario game, I just browsed through the sprite list of enemies from like 5 past Mario games that use sprites similar to that quality and art style, I didn't find a single one that looked like anything he used. The styles are similar and the "bird" looks like a cheep-cheep, but I'm fairly certain no direct ripping was done.
From what I've seen is his design was successful by accident and he didn't have a desire for revenue.
If this was the case there wouldn't be ads.

(User was banned for this post ("threadshitting" - MaxOfS2D))
You've seem to mistaken Facepunch as a place where people are active and hate video games
Is he really an idiot? Some people don't want fame and fortune, they just want to live simply in their own modest lives and just do their hobbies in peace. To tell you the truth I wouldn't be able to handle it, either.
What an idiot, he's throwing away a massive amount of money by doing this.
his long-term career is at stake edit: nevermind apparently he doesn't want a career in games
Another one dites the bust. Now hopefully the other kids at school will shut up about it.
his long-term career is at stake
Uh, that's not his reason at all. Like, the exact opposite even. He's stopping because it's a hobby and he wants to keep it that way.
Another one dites the bust. Now hopefully the other kids at school will shut up about it.
No sorry I will ruin your dream of that by releasing my own.
Uh, that's not his reason at all. Like, the exact opposite even. He's stopping because it's a hobby and he wants to keep it that way.
oh nevermind in that case i dont understand why he'd not take the free money. have your $50k a week hobby and do your shitty day job as well? weird if it was me though, and i was planning to make more games that are bigger and better, i'd definitely agree with his course of action
Personally I don't see how getting loads of free money would ever affect my life negatively. I'd just put it all in the bank and continue to live a normal life except without ever having to go to work.
How is throwing away a $50k a day paycheck going to save his career? If anything it's going to kill it.
i've been told otherwise about his intentions but, to explain: $50k a week/day/whatever pay-cheque is probably going to try up in a matter of weeks. i dunno how old he is, but if i was him and i was interested in going on to making bigger and better things and making a career out of great games, i'd rather cut my losses and run with the money accumulated so far rather than be associated with a game that most of the actual industry thinks is a really lucky, cheap, pretty crappy game, and then go on to make stuff that can scrub flappy bird from my name
