Well. Better now than the lawsuits hit him later. This game was suspiciously close to a flash game released a while back.
Canabalt. I don't understand how Canabalt was outdone by Flappy Bird... They're miles apart in terms of raw originality.
I hope you realize just exactly what you said and how you said it.
no homo
Uh, that's not his reason at all. Like, the exact opposite even.
He's stopping because it's a hobby and he wants to keep it that way.
Not only that but likely because of how much money he's making compared to what he created as a hobby, he's likely receiving tons of hate coming towards him.
I wouldn't really be able to handle the money if that meant everyone hating on me daily, especially given how fucked up some people are.
How is throwing away a $50k a day paycheck going to save his career? If anything it's going to kill it.
The game blew up in like a week, after a year of relative obscurity. It'd be foolish to think the trend would last at all without selling out like crazy and keeping it on life support (see angry birds).
I respect him for being smart enough to step out and rely on safer income, especially if it means not turning into a cash-milking sell-out (see angry birds again).
Given that he's vietnamese and $50000 is a way bigger deal than it is in the US, he's probably stopping because he doesn't want the fact that he's super rich be known

Because Canabalt is free to begin with so selling it for like 5 bucks while a free flash version is available is a bit foolish.
Good, i'm so tired of hearing about it.
$50k a week/day/whatever pay-cheque is probably going to try up in a matter of weeks. i dunno how old he is, but if i was him and i was interested in going on to making bigger and better things and making a career out of great games, i'd rather cut my losses and run with the money accumulated so far rather than be associated with a game that most of the actual industry thinks is a really lucky, cheap, pretty crappy game, and then go on to make stuff that can scrub flappy bird from my name
I don't get this though
simply having a tonne of cash doesn't make it harder to learn to make interesting stuff. if anything, it frees up time to study and develop further. the money won't last him forever, sure, but it will last him a good while, so why give it all up? if he were to just admit that flappy bird is simple and that he got lucky, and I can't imagine people holding it against him.

yeh you're right it's not the most logical thing to do but i can empathise with it is all i'm trying to get at really. like he must be pretty emotionally charged right now too especially when you consider he never even intended for this game to get popular at all
and he's probably getting all sorts of dumb death-threats everyday n stuff both from stupid nerds saying "WOW UR A LIAR AND A THIEF UR GAME SUCKS U STOLE ARTWORK" and probably also soccer moms upset that the game is so addictive
actually i'm amazed there hasn't been a daily mail article yet linking this game to someone's death
I can see why this game got so popular, I still play the shit out of Jetpack Joyride and it's basically the same thing.

It's fake, but http://geekclick.org/teen-arrested-for-killing-brother-over-flappy-bird-game/
No sorry I will ruin your dream of that by releasing my own.
Call it Slappy Bird and have the bird/fish hybrid smack off the pipes like a ragdoll.

yeah I sort of see where he's coming from, though I think it's a bit too late for him not to be remembered by this game. if that second part is true, that changes the situation significantly
I literally just heard my sister yell from the other room "I GET GOOD AT A GAME AND THEY TAKE IT DOWN"

Ridiculous Angry Flapping Bird Saga
Surely this isn't going to make a bit of difference for anyone with the apk on android stuff?
Well shit, let me check to see if there's any similar games on the App Store.

I would not have done this unless there was legal action/problems with government.
Free money, even if you don't like the money just give it away or something.
oh well, his choice I suppose.
I bet my ass it's because of lawsuits.
i can sympathise with him. he made the game like 6 months ago or something, never marketed it or anything.
Yeah, never marketed it.

It's weird how all three of his games are released early in the year, are basically dead for six months, and then explode in popularity in november-december. I wonder how they all did that.
Yeah, never marketed it.

Maybe once this one started to get big people checked out his others as well.

That's the magic of smartphone gaming, where knockoffs are quicker and cheaper to make.
Yeah, never marketed it.

wow what a great conspiracy theory
wtf do you think he is doing, paying off the app-store or something? no one has yet to find any singular source of popularity for the game. there is no example of marketing for the game in existence. all we can assume is it has been complete luck
for all we know the game got passed around some highschool somewhere and then spread that way maybe? who knows? not us that's for sure. even if he did market it, to blow up like it did he would have had to spend thousands. like, the sort of thousands that EA spends. or maybe your conspiracy theory goes deeper and he has friends high up at both google and apple or some other bullshit
but no let's vindicate this guy and say that we think the only reason he took the game down is to avoid being sued for stealing.... something? and claiming that he cheated his way to the top... despite no evidence
for a lot of facepunch, too much of it, people who have success are guilty until proven innocent

Yeah it is weird. And it would be weird even if he did market it. That's why there's so many articles on this, how does a game this simple (and shitty) blow up like this? It's pretty fascinating.

(Also, spoilers: app store botting is a pretty widespread practice)
(Also, spoilers: app store botting is a pretty widespread practice)
but still, without proof, you think this guy has done that to the point where he is basically the most successful person to have botted the appstore? i just don't get why you'd be so hard-set against any chance that his success might be down to
a. luck
and/or
b. the game is actually addictive, whether for good or bad reasons
regardless, the success of the other games doesn't match flappy birds at all and is most obviously explained by the massive influx of interest his previous stuff would have gotten from flappy bird
Allready put it on my dropbox (android apk)

Flappy Bird started getting pretty high around the start of December based on the graphs and the other two lagged after getting high on the chart around the late December early January time periods. I bet if you compared the charts of the company that made Candy Crush Saga it would look pretty similar.
