Why do all the popular mobile games seem to be reskins of concepts that have been around as flash games for years now
Flash games are simple enough and fun enough that they can engage people for a long time and have a wide target audience. They've sort of reached their peak in gameplay substance really, so people just go back to timetested formulas when creating new ones.
The fad was good while it lasted, kudos to the developer for being able to get rid of something that is generating 50k per day for him.
This doesn't matter in the least, because you can just download it from a non-mobile-marketplace. I can literally just google "Flappy Bird apk" and redownload it on my Android in 5 minutes.
Here's a dumb guy playing it
This guy is pretty much what's wrong with the internet, and watching this makes me want to die.
Why do all the popular mobile games seem to be reskins of concepts that have been around as flash games for years now
you're acting like this guy intentionally knocked off concepts from other games for his own benefit. a lot of people make knockoffs of other games when they first get into making games. it's a good way to learn. that's probably exactly what this game was, it's a free game on the app store that nobody knew about for like 6 months before it blew up. hell, the guy even takes the fucking game OFF THE APP STORE because he's sick of it's popularity and people still accuse him of "ripping off" other games. sure a lot of mobile developers are scumbags but i really don't think this guy is.
A game that blew up last week. It's a clone of helicopter but has been accused of ripping SMB3 sprites Here's a dumb guy playing it
With the guy having chosen that as his title card image, I wonder if he realized how exploitable that image would be.
Judging by my news feed, nobody knows yet because all I see are new flappybird scores and selfies.
I'd say the developer is overwhelmed by the sudden spike in attention and simply doesn't know how to cope with it. I wouldn't be surprised if he brings it back after he's had time to rest and figure out how to handle the game's popularity and revenue.
I agree. I can imagine it's pretty stressful to go from near anonymity and suddenly then a much higher public profile well outside his country, including critics/detractors and probably a lot of trolls bothering him. And suddenly having an influx of money like that, well, you're probably suddenly going to start getting calls and visits from relatives you didn't even know you had wanting to get a piece of it, on top of all the random people who're probably trying to hustle him for a piece of the action.
Aww boo hoo, you're making $50,000 a day from an app. If it's too much stress for you just hand it over to me, I'll take it off your hands.
Taking it off the app store isn't going to stop his income. The app is still installed on the device and won't be deleted unless the user does it or a device reset. He can still technically make the ad revenue, it's just going to be harder for people to install the game later. Android is super easy, just install the apk and break your phone by smashing it on the ground a few minutes later in game. So no, he's not throwing 50k a day down the drain. He could be causing hype, causing massive amounts of downloads in the past 24 hours and increasing his ad revenue. Why? Because Flappy birds is now becoming a get it now or never get it kind of app. Similar to some sale that won't happen again. For all we know, he could be making $100k a day right now and for a week or so before it dies down. You can look at this decision as mass increase in downloads, installs and ad revenue or him going under the radar for some time with a boat load of income. People thinking he's going to stop his income is stupid and doesn't know how removing an app on an app store works, it's still going to be on the devices and the ads will probably still show hence him still making ad revenue.
I understand that dealing with sudden fame and an influx of revenue for a random product is tough, but $50,000 a day is a fuckton of money to throw away for the sake of rectifying mild annoyance. If someone offered me $50k a day but also fame/infamy to go with it, I'd gladly go live as a hermit if necessary, because that is an insane income. For reference, if the app was up for 365 days and sold $50k each day, it'd make his yearly income (before taxes, expenses and etc.) $18,250,000. AKA, an insane amount of money. It probably wouldn't sell that hard for that long though, but even if it made only $10k a day, it'd make him over $3.5 million per year. $5k in sales each day would earn $1.8 million a year. Basically, keeping it up on the store would pretty much ensure he made a damn good amount of money off of it, perhaps even enough to retire young if it somehow stayed insanely popular for long enough. Again, I get that with the money comes problems, but at some point one has to weigh the pros and cons and see that the money likely makes the annoyance worth it. I'm not one to usually put money above morals/personal issues, but again, that's a batshit amount of income per day, and not a good idea to just toss out the window because a few people on the internet are being shits over your product. I honestly feel he's a bit whiny and ignorant to toss away a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity like this, just because he can't handle people really liking/disliking his game.

Making $50k a day is more than many people make in a year. He'll have plenty to live on while he works on making bigger and better things.
It just means that he cares more about making games than about making money. Making $50k a day is more than many people make in a year. He'll have plenty to live on while he works on making bigger and better things.
Makes sense to me. I understand how someone can value their craft over the profits it might generate, especially considering just how lust for profits seems to be the greatest and most destructive evil we know of in modern times. However, I still think it's a bad idea to remove the app so quickly, though. By my calculations, before any costs that might cut into profits and assuming $50k exactly is made each day, he would make $1 million in a mere 20 days. I think it'd be reasonable to tolerate any crap brought on by the product for anywhere from nearly three weeks to a month, if the result is becoming a millionaire. Artistic integrity is very important, and I can respect wanting to keep it intact at the cost of making more money. But sometimes, practicality has to stop taking a backseat to the wants and needs of the heart, lest you wind up a starving artist. Especially when you can make roughly a million dollars per month, and somehow manage to do so without screwing anyone else over or pulling any shady bullshit. Assuming I know anything about people, most people would figuratively kill for a chance to make fucktons of money without the typical issues of illegality, immorality or improbability.
I just realized his name is fucking Dong.
Oh come on. Vietnamese and Thai people's name does not spell right when you spell them in English so cut them so slack. Nguyen probably didn't like the Americans making fun of a Vietnamese game. Also, it is also good for him to avoid potential lawsuits and probably use his money to make a better game
This guy is pretty much what's wrong with the internet, and watching this makes me want to die.
You can just ignore him, you know. That's the nature of how the Internet works, you only continually view things that interest you and you ignore the rest. Your hate towards some random guy just because he made something you don't like is exactly the same reason as to why the Flappy Bird guy is removing his game. Hey maybe I should clone it and sell it for a dollar...
Well shit, let me check to see if there's any similar games on the App Store.
goddamnit
Why are you defending who stole someone else's game, and then stole sprites from Nintendo? The game helicopter has been around for years and this guy's making a quick buck off of someone else's work
because he clearly never intended it to be this big? doesnt take much thought really does it
Since he is in Vietnam it could also mean that he's got problems now that people know that he has a buttload of money.
Cypress Hill tried to warn him but he didn't listen..
I am probably going to be called an old man for this but thank fuck mobile gaming is a cancerous tumour on the face of gaming still its good to see one of the developers show some restraint so I'm happy. Ok you can give me your box's now
Man this is like Phil Fish all over again.
Um. Not really.
This is why let's plays being popular was very much a bad thing.
That's like pointing to Sonic '06 and saying "this is why video games being popular is very much a bad thing".

Why are people saying that he's earning 50k a day from this? It's free and there's no ads. Edit: Then I assume it has ads :v: I just tired it twice, wasn't much fun.

When an app is deleted from either the GPlay store or Apple App Store, is it automatically deleted off phones when the phone is synced? I can't think of any situation this has happened in the past.
