UK: Pupils sent to detention because their parents can't afford school meals
The clue that this school is creepy as fuck is the fact it refers to a 'family lunch'.
What does this entail?
Well, one of my family friends is a head of sixth form at a London school. He sometimes goes around visiting other schools to see what they might be doing right and what they could learn from them. So one of the schools they visited did this 'family lunch' and was apparently one of the top five 'value added' schools in the country.
Basically, they all sit in the lunch hall in dead silence, like a 'family'. On each table, each person is assigned a role. One person gets the water, another gets the cutlery, and so on. They continue to sit in silence until the school captain comes up to speak. He then reads out all of the announcements. In addition to this, he barks out when the next exams and so on will be. He goes through people by name, saying that they 'need to improve', 'that's not good enough' or 'can aim for more'. Only after this excruciatingly long process has finished are these kids allowed to sit and eat like normal human beings, but they need to be careful lest they get a bit too rowdy and be forced to sit and eat in silence again. Just truly bizarre.
I can't see that working for the size of a school I graduated from. 1700 students when I came in, close to 2100 when I left.
Fucking £75 per week for lunch? What bullshit is this?
It's £2.50 a day, £12.50 a week, which is still a bit too much in my opinion considering the quality of the slop they serve, thankfully most schools don't enforce school meals although there are a few that do.
They should really just scrap the fees (that's what it looks like here, £75 for a weeks worth of lunches sounds like they're feeding the kids a banquet or high end restaurant - you could feed someone for a month for £75 if careful/perhaps easily I've not tried).
Get these kids parents into the school and resolve the issue, these kids are either going to starve from the lack of lunches or their parents get signposted to somewhere that can help them obtain enough food to pay for the kids lunches. I've had to go through the starve route some days at school, you didn't get forced into a lunch detention or given an arbitrary fee for a school meal if you didn't have one.
In the US, I could expect this. But in rich European countries, it seems easier to just have it free and financed by taxes than collecting money for it from the pupils.
Thats how it is in belgium afaik
There are schools that make you pay a certain amount every month??? :why:
just use a fingerprint system that connects to your account where you just top it up every so often and get charged for what you take
What the fuck is this, sound more like prision than a school.
i'm guessing the uniform is a drab grey jumpsuit and a buzzcut, too
Oh it's a free school, not surprised at all then, those schools were always fucking weird.
Whats the alternative?
Give them a free meal every day and the parents never pay?
Seems better than just making them go without.
you know school lunches are probably the only time some of these kids actually eat right? in the US childhood malnutrition was virtually wiped out thanks to free lunches from the state, its in everyones best interest except the rich pricks who complain about free lunches. they would rather kids get rickets than see them get free food
Man fuck this country. They have no idea the damage their doing to those kids.
Or maybe they do and just don't care, in which case why the hell were they hired for the job to educate our future adults in this country. All they're teaching them is that if your in a bad financial position, regardless if it's you can help it or not, you get punished. What does that teach them?
Warm school meals should really be provided to all children, no matter parental income.
I worry for future generations of kids. The welfare state is slowly being eroded. Inequality is becoming greater.
The generation after you're own are supposed to have it better than you did. Although I think maybe mine was the last generation to see things get better (even if we've been fucked in adulthood).
When I was little, probably around '99 my parents used to say that we were the luckiest generation of kids, who should have the most going for us into the future. They now think they might've been wrong. My mum now thinks her generation have fucked things for future, that they'll be the last generation to have it all easily.
I sometimes think if I have kids I'm not even sure I'd want to raise them in the country. The odds of myself being able to buy my own home, with my own money are close to nil, I'll be borrowing from my parents. I don't think I'd ever be able to pass on that ability to my own children.
Oh it's a free school, not surprised at all then, those schools were always fucking weird.
Are you serious? Every "free school" is "weird"?
I'm not sure whether you're just really snobby from private education or you're just generalizing from ignorance.
Man fuck this country. They have no idea the damage their doing to those kids.
You're blaming the country on one head teacher/deputy head/SLT's actions?
Warm school meals should really be provided to all children, no matter parental income.
My school's canteen is actually a third-party called Sodexo. More and more schools (most of the schools in my county have this system) have canteens ran by third-parties. I don't see free meals coming anytime soon (to my area anyway, I guess it depends on your school's funding).
You only get free school meals if you have pupil premium at my school. For example, if you have a disabled, unemployed or low income parent you might be eligible for pupil premium but I think it depends on your school's opinion.
How much do school meals cost in the UK?
Down here they're only like $2.
Depends on what kind of canteen/school you have and what you want from the canteen in some cases.
I hope i do not ever enter a area known as LUNCH ISOLATION
can people in uk schools bring their own lunch?
I hope i do not ever enter a area known as LUNCH ISOLATION
You're sat in a small room that usually smells like sick in small, grey cubicles and have to do work all day (during break and lunch, but you get to eat during lunchtime). It's called ISOLATION for a reason :v:
can people in uk schools bring their own lunch?
Yes
tuckshops/school dinners should be optional, thats what we do here and it works out extremely well
Are you serious? Every "free school" is "weird"?
'Free schools' does not refer to all nonprivate schools. It's a special type of school separate from other state funded schools like comprehensives and grammar schools in that they're not accountable to local authorities. It's the product of some weird Tory initiative and is what allowed all those fucked up religious schools to sprout up.
In most Danish school there isn't even a cantina for 0th-9th grade - you simply bring food with you. Paying for school meals every day seems like a good way to make people poorer, and from my experiences with school food in Germany and the US, I'd probably even prefer ryebread all day every day. I've even heard that it's obligatory to eat (or at least pay) for school meals, which sounds like all kinds of fucked up to me.
In my state if you can't afford meals you can apply for the free/reduced lunch program and get free breakfast and lunch every day. This school is fucked

I thought there were programs designed just for that?

Man that sounds like a great idea
In fact, why not charge up the prices even more so that only the elite can go to school, and use the others as door mats
The fuck is going on in the world

"Cunt"
“They will receive a Sandwich and piece of fruit only. They will spend the entire sixty minutes period in lunch isolation.”
how is that even remotely legal? the way it just says "they will receive a sandwich and piece of fruit only" it's like a fucking prison
Makes me glad i'm no longer in School.

Why does anyone listen to Jamie again?
Fucking appalling, I hope that head gets a crack around the skull from a deservedly angry parent. Things are only going to get worse as the government cunts take away welfare from people who need it. We need to take it back from them, by force if need be.

Since when was bringing your own food to school banned?

You what? No school meals at all unless you bring it? I did not expect that from our southern neighbour. But free school meals provided by the school are the best.
im glad school lunches were never mandatory here
some of the shit i hear from english secondary schools sounds absolutely grim. if i had that many restrictions lopped on me for 8 hours of the day i'd go mental
