Doesn't change the fact the officer could have tazed/pepper-sprayed/used his baton/etc. There were still other options.
He was drunk too, so it's not like he would have been near his full potential anyways.

Not really, I doubt the cop knew that at the time.
I was at a rave last weekend and some shit like this happened but the kid took some bad acid and was having a terrible trip and ended up getting arrested and tazed because he was trying to fight/run away from the bacon.
Shooting a naked person is fucking stupid.
If he had pulled a knife (from where?) I would have understood somewhat. Shooting a guy who, at his worst, is probably only going to punch you in the eye, is ridiculous.
He could have pulled a gun.

If a trained cop can't take down a drunk naked college student then they shouldn't even be a police officer. I mean if you're scared just knock him out with your nightstick or taser him. No need to pull a gun out AT ALL in that situation.

HIS DICK WAS THE KNIFE
The problem is when your primary tool as a police officer is a hammer, than more problems begin to look like nails.
His thought process obviously went from, I fear for my personal safety -> I must protect my self -> My firearm is the best tool for this -> Bang.
Rather than actually using any form of police training and defusing the situation in another way.
This is a classic case of bad training, they get tought something along Agressor -> Scare with gun -> Defend yourself if attacked. Obviously they just fill the gap with Defend yourself with quickest tool (gun).
Fucking disgusting that someone like this would be put in charge of handling these situations regularly.
what threat could have posed to an armed police officer
It is definitely possible to kill with bare fists.
Stories like this make me glad the average policeman in my country isn't armed.
Am I the only one of the opinion that the officer may have been in the right here? If someone walks up to me naked, I'm going to assume they're on drugs. I don't know what drugs, it could be LSD and if he comes to attack me while hes potentially on LSD I'm not going to put my life at risk trying to take him out nonlethally, there have been cases where it has taken multiple officers to restrain one person who was on drugs.
oh no what if they were mashed off their tits on ecstasy pipes you'll have to be more brainwrong than a one off man mental not to put them down.
because he was clearly thinking rationally at the time right? this kinda thing makes me glad not every cop carries a gun in my country.
Yeah let's blame our actions on the substance we knowingly intoxicated ourselves with. That's a good defense.
It bothers me that his first response was to pull out his gun. Surely he should have first been prepared to use non-lethal force, and then only armed himself as a last resort?
If this happened as the officer says, then I can't find fault with him. If a grown man is naked and running around out in public, that right there is cause to question his mental state. If he's aggressive too, then that right there will cause the escalation in the use of force. If he's challenging an officer to a fight then you know he's out of control.
As far as using other items, I'd need to know what other items the officers have and are trained to use. A taser for instance only works in certain conditions. I know if I had a split second to grab a weapon before someone attacked me, I'm going for the most lethal. Stuff like tasers are for when you have the space and time to plan your moves.
Why didn't he just lock the door, call for backup, wrestle and cuff him off to the station.

Not to mention if hes drugged there is a good chance he will shrug off the taser as well as well.
This is why I'm glad that i live in the uk, Not because our police are better trained, but because they don't have guns so this situation can rarely happen. Police brutality is always better than an unnecessary death, even if the brutality itself is not commendable in any way whatsoever.
I would say in that situation, They handled it incredibly badly, no one was helping the guy and they where just running around. I'm not making a case for police being idiots, all police round the world have idiots in them, as the video demonstrates. I would just rather those idiots where not in possession of a lethal firearm.
And i agree with you, no one should have to wait for backup in a situation like that. They should have had proper training to deal with the dog, even if that means killing it. Pit bulls themselves aren't dangerous, however the way they are trained and brought up is far to often the reasons for them being so aggressive.
Right, because normally when I'm running around naked I'm in a perfectly sane state of mind.
Obviously you're a nudist if you run around naked.

This, minus LSD. Anytime something like this happens, PCP is usually involved. I've heard of a kid that smoked some laced weed, went ballistic, and pried a LOCKED door off its hinges with his bare hands, naked, of course. Imagine what this kid could have done to the cop had he been able to strike him.

Are you saying they should have attempted to fight the pit bull? Because I don't think that would have worked very well either.
Thats why your police get fucked by dogs

Nobody should have to wait for the Firearm Officers to do things before they get injured.
Like your Regular Policemen are just waiting to get fucked by someone.
I don't understand why he's not punching it in the face or stomping its back in or something. Hell as a last resort go at its eyes, I'm pretty sure it'll back off then, as fucked up as it is you have to do something to defend yourself, as they can be lethal if they get your down and latch onto your throat. You know?

Jesus, why would anybody lace weed with PCP? That's just fucked up.
why didn't he taze him
[editline]9th October 2012[/editline]
oh wait shit that actually applies to this
Tazing is often prohibited by the department when the officer is alone. It would have been grounds to fire him.
A single gunshot wound from a handgun has an extremely small chance of killing you. To kill someone prior to the arrival of an ambulance with a handgun you have to hit something VITAL. Like an artery or the brain. Even then with basic pressure, you may survive. A shot even to the liver takes a long while to kill you.
Not that shooting him was a good plan. You never shoot once. That is fucking ridiculous.
Why cops don't deploy pepperball guns, I really don't know. Pepper spray sucks because you have to basically be on top of the person to use it, and if it fails you are fucked hardcore. Pepperballs though can be deployed at range with virtually no chance of actually killing someone, even if you dump an entire 200 round hopper. Great for situations where you can't really employ the tazer, but the suspect isn't doing quite what you want.
Beanbag shotguns would also be nice, albeit not nearly as good a choice. But that may be just because I want to stay "should have shot the kid in the beanbag with a beanbag"

Was thinking of the wrong drug sorry.

If the person is on PCP that's not going to drop them. When you're hyped up on drugs like that there have been people who have broken both their legs and still tried to keep going.
because someone has to be armed to be dangerous right?

I've read that the drug isn't that bad in appropriate doses, but I imagine it's pretty hard to measure something when you're just dipping a joint in it.
America needs to do something about its gun culture
I don't understand how a kid like that could be in higher education. Do Americans just let anyone into higher education nowadays?
