Baked lighting is possible but you just have to use 3rd party programs to do it.
That's PhysX
Still gotta add the framework for PhysX to work at all. You can't just enable PhysX in Source and expect it to change anything. I'd be happy with PhysX and AMD's physics enhancements to be added.
Source already does baked lighting, the thing is that you have to get around many limitations to make it lookg reat, regarding the video, you'd explode your video memory since everything is baked into the main texture
What are you talking about? That video is realtime and baked textures wouldn't "explode your video memory" (I don't even know what you are talking about with the "main texture" part, those are models each using individual UV wrapped materials).

I very much doubt that valve would use a physics engine that doesn't support Linux and Amd hardware properly.
Yeah and considering source has no way of streaming textures you'd load everything in high quality into memory and it'd also take a long time, besides you'd get no ambient cubes for other things, it looks really great but it's really implausible to use it for any gameplay
Streaming textures is irrelevant, yes it would increase load times but it wouldn't cause a significant drop in FPS. It's a proof of concept, and could be used for maps for say Garry's Mod. But recreating Half Life 2 with it is obviously implausible because any edits would require rebaking and wrapping the models. It would also remove the use of most (if not all) brushes as well which is Source's primary tool of creation.

what about ~levelution~
it's not mean't to be "Super amazing" graphically
source has always been a jack of all trades.
I don't know man
When HL2 first game out in 2004 as the flagship source game, it looked fucking amazing for the time.
Hell, HL2 still looks really damn good if you ignore the lack of detail in the scenes, the flat textures and the fact that stuff like buildings are just basically textured squares with grating put on here and there.
As well as porting the (optimized) models, I also baked their textures and lighting.
so they're all uniquely individually uv'd models authored in a 3rd party program
it's a mega waste of resources (unless you happen to be using id tech 5) and the only "work" source is doing is with those cubemaps (which look bad)

Uh. Since all that lighting is just baked into the models texture. Any dynamic objects (players, NPCs , physical objects) won't be lit properly. You'd have to make the map model full bright and disable it's vrad shadows then put brushes right under everything and still do lighting the normal way for it to look half decent with stuff moving around in it.
You probably could make a map that way. But it'd be hacky and painful as all hell.
I really hope source 2 has bigger maps. That was actually one of my main gripes with Half Life 2; felt like you loaded a lot. Would also be great for Gmod, since you would be able to have much bigger sandbox maps.
Except no one cares about that anymore because Gmod is just kids playing ttt and screaming about da rulez
i am just happy if they can make it look better than what they have now

So you'll be happy regardless?

Valve caters to a certain audience and they design their games and engine around that. I'd take open moddability along with engine flexibility over ridiculous attempts at photorealism and such.
Because thats just not how Valve works. I bet you they don't give two shits about trying to beat UE4 or whatever other engine graphically, Valve knows what they can do and what is best for their audience and that is enough for me.
Its ridiculous that after all this time source 2 is starting to surface and people expect it to be the most cutting edge thing out there.
this is exciting news. can't wait to see what the modding community has in store for Source 2.

Valve has an enormously talented team and source engine was gorgeous when it came out, people are expecting the same kind of thing here.
What is shown in this thread it's far from revolutionary or even up to par to what we have.
With that said, I'm still expecting this to be either old or an hoax.

It's also quite astounishing when you compare Source with other 2004 games released in its time, it shat over the entire industry but was outdated quickly when devs started noticing Source's power
Compared to the actual Source 1 screens it looks quite good, but on it's own I dunno...hope they have something more up their sleeve with it. Kinda reminds me of Medal of Honor: Airborne which came out 5 years ago. Even BIA: Hell's Highway which is even older.
Probably late, but those leaked screenshots are nearly identical to one of Moby Francke's concepts that I found on his website.

We have, what, two screenshots and zero information about it?
How do people come to such fast conclusions about what Source 2 apparently doesn't have.
So you'll be happy regardless?
well obviously I would be a lot happier if they could even nearly rival the more modern engines like UE4
although that might be a bit ambitious

I think Valve would want to create something flexible, not something that's photorealistic. When TF3 inevitably happens years down the line we all know it won't stray from the current art style. If they create something that's pretty and practical then I'm a happy man.
Who else thinks they'll release HL3 and Source2 in 1 go.
Makes sense to me even though I care a lot more for Source2 then HL2 but it would make a lot of sense from a Marketing perspective.
I'm probably also mega late with this but I'm just throwing this question in.

what makes you think this
TF2 is pretty solid as it is and has many years left to go
what makes you think this

That's why just after the bold text I said "years down the line".
Sigh... I'm not CBOAT.
First I have to say, that I feel terrible and that giving screenshots to CBOAT was a stupid idea.
I'm in contact with Valve whom I explained everything and sincerely apologized for what I've done.
I have to live with every consequence out of this.
But now, things got personal yesterday and during the night.
I've got not so nice emails and apart from already having pissed off Valve, the idea that I might be CBOAT apparently drew Microsoft people to me, which, honestly, makes me afraid.
That is why I felt the need to make this thread.
So again: I'm not CBOAT and I don't know who he is. (He even writes PMs in that obfuscated way)
People should know (especially MisterX), that I was and still am one of the biggest Xbox One supporters on NeoGaf.
I was even banned multiple times because of this. I only was CBOATs source for this particular leak which doesn't have anything to do with that silly MS vs. Sony console war.
I PMed him a dropbox link to that screenshot and he uploaded it directly from that link.
The source of the upload is saved by that image hoster and one user here found that connection which basically outed me as CBOATs source.
How people can spin the theory that I'm a mod and CBOAT in union out of this, still goes over my head.
To answer the open question on why I redacted older posts:
After one user found the connection between me and CBOAT I deleted all references to my Dropbox account simply to protect my identity.
Every user here can edit his/her own posts even years after they were made.
So please - make that witch hunt stop :(
P.S. Sorry to all the mods for causing so much trouble and workload.
but you're still making the assumption that there'll be a TF3
