You seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding of what an adblocker does how dangerous it can be to not block ads. You also seem to not know that it isn't just downloads that are the problem. Also you need to stop saying your dad works for Nintendo without actually saying what he does there. Ads don't just cause downloads. Because ads can append Javascript, they can do other stuff, like the following for instance steam just been hit by an attack. Steam is Chromium based too, just as an FIY. In simpler terms, they can read what you do. Amongst those things are passwords and credit card numbers. The thing about adblockers is, that they don't just block ads. They block access from the advertisers to your computer. Just like modifying a host file. Also, if you ask, I've been doing webdevelopment since 2012
Are we going to get into flash-based ads yet? Or do we not go there? Because in terms of security issues, oh man, basic HTML5 and JS based ads are like water.

Wouldn't want to go overboard :v: I can say I'm happy that I use a browser that doesn't have Flash installed, or their own version like Chrome

It's possible that JavaScript could be used to steal info inputted into the page, that being said you have to be on a very dodgy website if you're entering credit card info onto a page with ads. For the majority of websites if you're just generally browsing without entering private info, the worst that's probably going to happen is you get redirected to another page which then tries to download something or is a phishing site. It's more a case of "don't enter your private info into dodgy websites", again more of a common sense thing. Also, I'm not talking about Flash-based ads, because Flash is dead, obviously plugins are subject to security issues
I never said my dad works for Nintendo, you just made that shit up, bravo.
How can you be this dense to not see what he means? You call others condescending pricks but I hope you see the irony in that.
How can you be this dense to not see what he means? You call others condescending pricks but I hope you see the irony in that.
I've not been condescending, it's not condescending to point out someone for making stuff up about what I said.

Well aren't you guys a bunch of idiots. Trying to have a serious discussion and all you can do is say stupid shit with alternate meanings. Well done! (User was banned for this post ("Flaming" - Novangel))
Well aren't you guys a bunch of idiots. Trying to have a serious discussion and all you can do is say stupid shit with alternate meanings.
It's hard to take you seriously when you say that you've worked in "security" yet you display a lack of understanding for basic internet security principles.
I've already explained myself pretty well, the only thing I display a lack of understanding for, is people posting pointless comments with alternate meanings. I'm done here.
Like i could walk into your free library but if i had people holding up signs at every aisle and a significant amount of them had the flu i may just want to vaccinate myself before i go in there
I get where you're coming from, but that's not at all the same. If your system is exploitable by every single exploit out there because you have no real security ie lack of vaccine, then you're going to die.
I've already explained myself pretty well, the only thing I display a lack of understanding for, is people posting pointless comments with alternate meanings. I'm done here.
Are you 12?
I never said my dad works for Nintendo, you just made that shit up, bravo.
Here's some reading material. After that you can look at the first post where I mention that.
It's possible that JavaScript could be used to steal info inputted into the page, that being said you have to be on a very dodgy website if you're entering credit card info onto a page with ads. It's a matter of Javascript showing the malicious page instead of the real one. This isn't redirecting to a page that says "prince of Nigeria needs your credit card." This is about being on a store page where the real form has been replaced with a fraudulent one. Or Javascript sending information like passwords, sessions, and/or emails and stuff. Which is basically what happened to Steam 13 hours ago.
It's more a case of "don't enter your private info into dodgy websites", again more of a common sense thing.
As I wrote above, it isn't just about entering private information on dodgy website. Forbes, you know, that big reputable newspaper, was hit by malware. In that case it was a download, but it could just as well have been an AJAX call or something even more sinister. Now I personally don't care much if people got my passwords, as I use different passwords for everything except my computer and password file. I also use different emails (for organisational purposes) but gues who doesn't. Most people. [editline]8th February 2017[/editline]
I've not been condescending, it's not condescending to point out someone for making stuff up about what I said.
Every time I asked what kind of a programmer you were (usually when you said that you were a programmer) I would reply with it. Not once did you ask what it meant and not once did you seem to Google it. You've been so vague this entire time. Have used "it works on my machine" as an argument a lot. You said that you don't want to brag about what you do as a programmer, yet call people who question what you do "keyboard warriors." I would say you are condescending.

The last thing I am is condescending, but that's your opinion.

"Yes I clearly have no idea what I'm talking about despite the fact that I'm a programmer and know a lot about security." "What kind of programmer are you?" "You think I'm lying, typical keyboard warrior" That doesn't help you at all.
I was educated as a programmer and did a fair bit of work in C++ and C#, but I couldn't tell you any more than broad concepts when it comes to browser security. Sorry djjkps2, but your lack of specificity is suspicious. Are you actually a programmer in a relevant field?
I came here to give information, not to post about my personal life. I don't care if you think I'm suspicious, in fact, I don't really care at all if any of you disagree. I came here to help people, but my information seems to have fallen on deaf ears just because I have a right to my own privacy.

You coming here providing some facts, which is fine. But when people question where you have those facts from, or how come we have to listen to someone who basically goes: "My uncle works at Nintendo and he said Raiden will be a playable character in the next Super Smash Brothers.", you don't call them keyboard warriors And considering what you are ignoring from post#138, I would say it's pretty ironic of you talking about your information falling on deaf ears.
So, what, you're trolling? You coming here providing those facts, without being able to say why you can give those facts, is pretty much like going "My uncle works at Nintendo and he said Raiden will be a playable character in the next Super Smash Brothers."
Like I've already said, I didn't say it was impossible for a browser to be exploited by an ad, I said it was very unlikely. People argued back basically saying that it's very likely, and they have just as little proof as I have to prove their point. I don't see how what I'm doing is any different to anyone else in this thread. I did however reply saying yes, information can be stolen, but again, if you're entering private info into a website with ads or non-HTTPS website, you're obviously asking for trouble.
And considering what you are ignoring from post#138, I would say it's pretty ironic of you talking about your information falling on deaf ears.
I did read this post by the way, that still doesn't change my thoughts given what I've already said.
Then you're no better than them, and your points may be dismissed just as easily as theirs.
Good I'm glad we've concluded that discussing about how ad-blockers relate to security was a complete waste of time as nobody has any definitive proof.

There's been examples of Forbes, Steam, history.pushState(), as stuff that adblockers can deal with. I've never said it's likely, I've said it happens.
I did read this post by the way, that still doesn't change my thoughts given what I've already said.
Ah, taking the easy route, I see.
Looks like some people on here still use AdBlock/ABP. I suggest moving to uBlock Origin, I have heard some pretty shady stuff about ABP, and uBlock Origin is also more strict, in a good way.

uBlock Origin is very good, but it's always a good idea to block adservers with your hosts file, too. I find uBlock Origin has some issues blocking certain ads, and you can never be too careful.
I've said it happens too, so are we both on the same page? I said it can happen but it's very unlikely, which I hold as true. What happened with Steam didn't actually exploit any security systems in place in the browser, it allowed people to write JavaScript on the page, which yes can download a file or at worst steal private info, but as far as I'm aware (correct me if I'm wrong) this didn't happen on the login page or account settings pages

I'm not asking for your real name or street address, just a little more context as to what you actually do when you vaguely say 'I'm a programmer'. Your information isn't 'falling on deaf ears', it's being rejected because you're not giving us any reason to trust your opinion.
It's something which I choose to keep private.
Evidently not, when you're citing your expertise to try to lend weight to your arguments. In any case, it's utterly bizarre that you feel you can share your broad area of study but not narrow it down to the application. It's not like anyone's asking you details about where you work, and a response like 'back-end database design' or 'mobile Android development' is hardly any more revealing than the boilerplate 'programmer' response.

I simply stated that I'd done programming so I didn't look like I was just making it up. I've had a lot of experience dealing with security, especially on the web side of things. I've not always used an ad-blocker, but now I do solely for blocking ads, not for security. For the security side of things I just have an anti-virus and whatever other security systems are built into the OS, and that's been fine for me and everyone's computers I've worked with, in terms of browser security.
