god, you people. do you have any idea how long 8 years is? way too fucking long to be sitting in prison over theft.
i missed the part where he did it a bunch of times. seems about right, then my bad
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African-American_names
Huh. Interesting. I learned something today.
Theft in addition to probation violations. Repeat offender who clearly isn't learning.
Yeah, let's send him back. Maybe they'll fix him this time!
Yeah, let's send him back. Maybe they'll fix him this time!
He's proven he can't be trusted not to take other people's shit, so we're going to make sure he can't for a long time. I don't see a problem with this, he's had his chance.
average prison sentence for a rapist in the netherlands is 20 months and we're putting away people for 8 years for taking a ring off of a dead person. both of these things are fucked up
Out of sheer curiosity, where and when did names like Daquantrius start appearing among black communities? I mean, names like this aren't related to historical heritage either, are they? African communities don't use names like these as far as I can tell, so how exactly did African-Americans start landing them? What strikes me as odd are the apostrophes. Though some might not approve of the names or call them "stupid", a name's a name, and it should be respected.

Its 8 years because she had literally just died? Seems pretty reasonable to me, that's not on at all.
Everyone seems to have completely bypassed the fact that this guy didn't just steal a ring, he let this lady die. A decent person wouldn't bypass a lone woman having a fucking brain aneurysm. "8 years is totally too much." Would really love to see any of you guys say this if it was a relative or friend that had been left to die.
Brain aneurysm at 43? Wow.
A good friend of mine had her husband of 30 have a brain aneurysm. He cant see out of his left eye right now.
(she died the next day, he didn't "let this lady die")
They stole the ring instead of helping so yes. Actual murder would give a shorter sentence here so it seems harsh.

But since he does, he got what was coming to him.

I see why it's a especially bad theft but 8 years is still overkill. Then again maybe there's some grander context to it apart from the sentimental value. Deserved it.
Guys have done way worse things and gotten way less
They aren't legally obligated to render aid, so you can't send them to prison for not helping. Plus you'd have to prove she wasn't going to die anyways, even if 911 had been called immediately. The VALUE of the ring is what matters. Most states have laws where if you steal something worth under a certain amount then it's counted as a misdemeanor. If you steal something more valuable then it becomes a felony. So I'd guess they asked the husband how much the ring cost. Once they had them on a felony charge it's maximum prison time. If the husband was smart then he told the cops the value of the ring was over the felony limit like such: Cops- "Sir, if, we're just saying IF, the value of the ring was over X dollars then it's a felony" Husband- "The value was X + 1 a dollar" Cops- "What a coincidence!"
Cops- "Sir, if, we're just saying IF, the value of the ring was over X dollars then it's a felony" Husband- "The value was X + 1 a dollar" Cops- "What a coincidence!"
Sounds illegal and corrupt as fuck if husband is lying but cops/investigation just rolls with it.
Well, I think we can all agree what these guys did was despicable and criminal. So they should be locked up. How do you go about making that happen? That's the trick. It has to be legal, you can't just accuse them of being bad people and hope that works. So one way is look for violations, like a probation violation, which they got one guy for. Outstanding warrants, failures to report to parole officers, etc. Once you've done that and you still don't have enough for prison time, then you start looking for technical enhancements to the charges. Stealing a $200 ring is one thing, stealing a $2,000 ring is another type of crime entirely. So it's not illegal or corrupt, it's just using discretion to maximize the sentence. The prosecutors could have offered plea bargains with little jail time, but why would you do that for these guys?

That's how corruption works. It's despicable and criminal sure, but not inflated sentence kind of despicable and criminal. That's just bullshit.
Due to the circumstances of this robbery, I say give him 10 to be sure he learned his manners. RIp this poor woman.
Deception? Lies? Where exactly did those two things happen in this case?
He's alluding to the vulnerability and probable perversion of a justice system that advocates quick, concise and harsh punishments based on first-hand testimonies/anything that would let misinformation seep in. Such a system would end up killing more innocents than guilty offenders through the sheer power of emotions and rage clouding an otherwise logical mind. The desire to see justice done immediately is what drives vigilantism, and basing this vigilantism on what is faulty face-value interpretation of evidence means you end up with lots and lots of innocent dead people, whose relatives would in turn seek out this twisted kind of justice.
Deception? Lies? Where exactly did those two things happen in this case?
The part where he says ring is worth much more than it is just so criminal gets harsher punishment? If that isn't deception and lie, I don't know what is.
