Well of course Macs make a greater profit. Performance wise, they're not that great, yet Apple will slap on a premium price.
Big 5 manufacturers =!= entire PC industry
If an "other" category is added for the rest of the manufacturers, and Apple still beats the PC out in profit margins, then we'll talk.
that plus these days a [del]HEAPING[/del] I was wrong only an 'ok' amount of PC's are "Other" and mostly "Custom"
something tells me that 5 year old Asus laptop isn't a unibody made of aluminum with a thin, sleek design
It certainly isn't, but it was a fantastic price/value when it came out and is still going strong 3 years longer than the macbook. To me, that's better. Either way I really don't think Macboks look all that great, they're just about as simple as a laptop can be and there's nothing wrong with that but it doesn't particularly stand out to me either.
that plus these days a HEAPING amount of PC's are "Other" and mostly "Custom"
the number is far greater, I bet 10$ on it. you have to count custom as well. IMHO those 5 are small compared to custom.
custom built PC's take up an insignificant portion of the PC marketshare

I disagree. IMO, custom is a pretty small segment of the PC market. Most people are too stupid or lazy or uncaring to b ild their own PC.

Macs are meant to be simple, this dates all the way back to the first Macintosh. Some people prefer the sleek, smooth, aluminum body designed by some of the best designers in the world. The OS isnt so bad either. A closed, non open software environment makes for more stable and well made programs and apparently a lot of people like that.

also the fact that OSX was custom tailored to specific hardware makes it a much better OS for laptops than Windows will ever hope to be

I wasn't aware this was an important design feature. I had a laptop to take notes at school and not carry so many damn books around. It had a decent keyboard/touchpad, longer battery life, approximately equal performance, and a low-glare screen, all for $600 less than the cheapest Mac laptop. It was slightly larger in size yes, but it also had an SD card port, a dvd drive, HDMI/DVI ports, an eSATA port, and multiple USB ports. The increased functionality more than made up for the small size difference.

Count me among the PC enthusiasts but I wouldn't dare say custom PCs outnumber the sales of OEM/Laptops. That is probably impossible.
I wanna see how much of that is actually laptops and home computers.
I wasn't aware this was an important design feature.
it is, hence why they sell. Give the consumers what they want, works well

Okay first of all why do you need some of "the best designers in the world" (god damn is that smug and full of shit) to design something so simple. It's literally just the two halves of a laptop mostly flat with the corners rounded. There is no distinguishing features, colour, or design - it's just simple. Yes, that looks pretty good, but why the fuck are you trying to pretend it's some kind of revolutionary world changing mastercraft design?
On another note, closed software is not a sure sign of well designed software, open software can be collaborated on by many people to produce a better result if for no reason other than a large amount of testers who can provide better feedback by looking at the code responsible for the problems. Even if you literally just had the same people developing the software but had it open source so people could do a better job at finding faults in the program you would be guaranteed either the same or a better result.
which models are these? None will have as good a touchpad though
The latest Synaptics touchpads (aka 'clickpads') are incredible from a hardware perspective and any issues are either windows/software or pebkac/configuation based
Apple's touchpads are straight out of a rat's ass by comparison, better than stereotypical windows laptops, but not anything built in the last year or so.
The keep the profit high because people will pay it.
Obviously the current pricing works out for Apple. If there are people who buy your products then there are no need to lower prices?

An actual bug flew onto my screen and started chasing the bug in your avatar around. I need a drink. :/

Judging by all the ultra books / laptops trying to copy the design [I see many macbook lookalikes at my local electronics store] I'd say it's a pretty good design.
Fuck the Macbook, Clevos are better.

If it's so simple, why is it so expensive compare to a PC?
If it's so simple, why is it so expensive compare to a PC?
Simple people pay more.
[sp]I'm sorry.[/sp]
Because people are willing to fork out a bit more money for a better built computer that they can rely on AND have the knowledge that if it works on windows it works on mac
think about it, photoshop is on there, chrome, vlc, steam etc.. also final cut pro is a massive selling point if you're a video editor
+ as always, the touchpads are fucking amazing
In all seriousness, I know the Mac is good for video editing and media work. I just always abhorred the price, especially considering their limited upgradeability/bullshit proprietary peripherals.
but also the OS has been optimized to suit touchpad gestures, windows 8 is probably suited for something like that but honestly the best touchpad experience is to be enjoyed on a mac

It's not much of a design at all, it's basically the simplest shape a laptop can be. If that's what sells? Fine, but seriously implying apple did some kind of revolutionary design is both sad and hilarious. Apple always has and always will be about marketing more than product design. You don't need to make something revolutionary if people believe that it's revolutionary. The amount of people with macs that I have met who actually believe they bought the most powerful laptop on the market is actually pretty disappointing.

It's funny because I've never run into those type of people. They usually have their reasons as to why they bought one. Sometimes it's the support [or "Geniuses"] and sometimes they just like the look of the computer and the OS.
I would consider it a bit of a revolutionary design because it's thin, looks good, is rather simple and is extremely strong [I've dropped mine upwards of 30-40 times I know of, mostly when I sleep and it's still going fine today.].
All in all it also comes down to what your intended audience likes. You aren't going to market a Mac as a gaming laptop to a mother of 3 who wants a way to play farmville or get the family videos off of her camera, you'll market it as something simple, revolutionary and "cool".
Personally I'm glad they got the simple design. I'm sick and tired of seeing these bulky as hell laptops that look plain silly.
It really bugs me when people go on about mac being shit, it has its uses just like PCs have theirs. I use my mac for school and media while I used a PC for gaming (need to build a new one) and my mac meets my needs quite well. Yea macs may be kinda pricey but anything really worth it is usually kinda pricey.
That is probably my least favourite shitty marketing tactic - to make people think your product is of a high quality by jacking up the price. In any case, don't get me wrong - I'm not saying macs are anywhere near as bad as beats, nor did I ever even say they were "shit". I think they're decent and that's about it, but the prices are over the top ridiculous.
It's okay Razer will save us.
People pay more so for the branding, at least here they do.

My laptop has been through hell and back, and is getting in years, but it still works as well as the day I got it. Macs are just over hyped, if everyone knew about decent laptop vendors (http://www.xoticpc.com/) instead of places like dell, Apple wouldn't stand a chance.
It really bugs me when people go on about mac being shit, it has its uses just like PCs have theirs.
I always hear this, but what exactly are Macs better at than other PCs, technically speaking?

I disagree with this heavily for 2 reasons.
1) Apple's market scheme virtually ensures that no matter how poor their price/value is they will always sell
2) The site you linked has alienware on it jesus fuck. To be fair it also has some really amazing price/value laptops though.

Technically there's not much difference. There's some mid grade media editing software that comes packaged with it but pretty much all professional products will be on both windows and mac.
